Hi - I'm M.K. Tod, Mary actually, the author of newly released THE ADMIRAL'S WIFE, as well as PARIS IN RUINS, TIME AND REGRET, LIES TOLD IN SILENCE and UNRAVELLED. After a 20+ year career in business, in 2004, I moved to Hong Kong with my husband and no job. To keep busy I decided to research my grandfather’s part in the Great War. What began as an effort to understand my grandparents’ lives blossomed into a fulltime occupation as a writer. I have an active blog—www.awriterofhistory.com—on all aspects of historical fiction including interviews with authors, readers and others involved in this genre as well as insights from five historical fiction surveys. I live in Toronto and I’m happily married with two adult children.

Would it be the waters of the Nile in 1850 with Florence Nightingale and Gustave Flaubert in Enid Shomer's The Twelve Rooms of the Nile? Would it be England in the time of Henry II as portrayed in Sharon Kay Penman's Time and Chance. Perhaps 16th century Spain with C.W. Gortner's Juana in The Last Queen or biblical times with Geraldine Brooks's The Secret Chord or Africa with Paula McLain's heroine in Circling the Sun. Then there's my latest wonderful read which would situate me in 1947 France with Kate Quinn's memorable characters Eve and Charlie (Charlotte) from The Alice Network. So many choices - who could possibly decide? And that, of course, is the beauty of reading historical fiction!(less)

A cousin whose husband of thirty years left her for another man. A mother who's had four men who have loved her including one living half way around the world. A brother-in-law who hasn't been heard from in over twenty years. A friend who abandoned her children to escape an abusive marriage. A colleague who turned out to be a spy ... oops, made that one up. Life offers up so many possibilities that there isn't enough time to tell them all. Thanks for asking!(less)

What are you willing to fudge in historical fiction?

Authors Boyd and Beth Morrison have written a novel together – imagine all that sibling rivalry emerging in the process! Boyd Morrison is a best-selling author. Beth Morrison is Senior Curator of Manuscripts at the J. Paul Getty Museum and an expert medievalist. Together they’ve written The Lawless Land, the first in a Templar-Knight adventure series. I’m delighted to welcome them to the blog.

“If the newspapers reported the truth, if they wrote about the mud and filth and the body parts littering the ground and how young men look old before their time, would we still be here?”
M.K. Tod, Time and Regret

“Enemy flares made night work difficult, but our position has stabilized. Germans so deeply dug in that our division was unable to take Regina Trench. Hundreds of casualties. Desolation everywhere. We are weapons now, not men. Men decide whether or not to kill. Weapons merely kill.”
M.K. Tod, Time and Regret

“Divorce is a process, not an event. It takes months to unfold, a barrage of emotional ups and downs as denial is replaced by grief, grief by anger, and anger gradually eases into acceptance.”
