I believe in getting stuck in a story because I don't understand something or haven't given it enough thought... But that's never lasted more than a day or two for me.

My bigger problem is to do with perfectionism and letting it shut down my ability to write with any speed. So far, public accountability and deadlines have been able to overtake perfectionist inclinations.

But I might have to revisit these ideas if the day comes that those motivators stop working for me.(less)

I advise folks who don't intuitively have greatest storytelling instincts to read craft books. Or take classes. If you're not one of the lucky intuitive-types(I'm not.), don't try to pretend you are. There's no shame in it, and targeted learning will save you heartache, time, and frustration of trying to do it on your own.(less)

Synopsophobia -- Part II

Okay, so this is part of the synopsizing that gets a little trickier because it's not just about laying the foundation for the story. It's actually getting into the bits and pieces that facilitate the events and changes the characters go through in their personal character arcs as well as the romance.

Roger Zelazny
“Occasionally, there arises a writing situation where you see an alternative to what you are doing, a mad, wild gamble of a way for handling something, which may leave you looking stupid, ridiculous or brilliant -you just don't know which. You can play it safe there, too, and proceed along the route you'd mapped out for yourself. Or you can trust your personal demon who delivered that crazy idea in the first place.
Trust your demon.”
Roger Zelazny

Stephen King
“The most important things are the hardest to say. They are the things you get ashamed of, because words diminish them -- words shrink things that seemed limitless when they were in your head to no more than living size when they're brought out. But it's more than that, isn't it? The most important things lie too close to wherever your secret heart is buried, like landmarks to a treasure your enemies would love to steal away. And you may make revelations that cost you dearly only to have people look at you in a funny way, not understanding what you've said at all, or why you thought it was so important that you almost cried while you were saying it. That's the worst, I think. When the secret stays locked within not for want of a teller but for want of an understanding ear.”
Stephen King

“If you're not failing every now and again, it's a sign you're not doing anything very innovative.”
Woody Allen

“Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible”
Claude T. Bissell

George R.R. Martin
“I will hurt you for this. I don't know how yet, but give me time. A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid.”
George R.R. Martin, A Clash of Kings
