I learned to read when I was four years old, and I began writing soon thereafter. My first story was about a girl and her horse—it was awful, but my parents loved it, which encouraged me to continue. My favourite genres are of the fantastical and magical, where the mundane rules of real life don't apply. ...more

John Milton's Paradise Lost is fan fiction of the Bible. Marvel's Thor is fan fiction of Norse myths. BBC's Sherlock is fan fiction of Doyle's novels. Fan fiction that is created from a copyrighted material is under Fair Use as long as no one tries to make money from it, and I definitely don't try to make money from it.(less)

They taught me I was broken, flawed,

And so I lived my life a fraud.

I hid the truth so deep inside,

Even from myself I’d hide.

You came and broke my chains, got rid of the facade.

I dreamed of being strange and weird,

And yet I constantly appeared

So ordinary, normal, drab.

My friends were cool and different, fab;

Devoid of colour, I was grey and dull and drear.

Deceiver of Minds by Jordan L. Hawk
"DECEIVER OF MINDS was non stop action but it also felt very much like the middle of a book, which is an unfortunate side effect of a serialized story.

A lot gets revealed in this one and poor John just can't catch a break. He's been through so much an" Read more of this review »

R.R. Virdi shared a note and highlight from
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.
I've always loved and resonated with this quote, and have to love the fact it's a nod to existing poetry, and repurposed to be something special/beautiful within the world of Middle Earth as well. But I've long loved and held in my heart the line of: "Not all who wander are lost." It's been part of my own compass, as much as I can be said to have one, ever since I first came across these words so long ago in this book.

R.R. Virdi shared a note and highlight from
The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
‘Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.
A powerful lesson in consideration and judgement. Deserve is a dangerous word I've found, and personally, people are always too quick to decide what someone else deserves. As I've gotten older, I've been trying to do better and better in regards to this. I've always felt Gandalf had it right here, and I always wonder what things would be like if we were all a bit slower to judge, to decide what someone else deserves. And of course the last line: For even the very wise cannot see all ends. With that in mind, how can anyone ever be so quick to judge/decide? None of us can see the future, so ...more

The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien
‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’ said Frodo. ‘So do I,’ said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.
As part of the release of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, celebrated authors (and huge fans) of the books are sharing their exclusive annotations with readers. We hope you enjoy these notes from R.R. Virdi, a USA Today Bestselling author, two-time Dragon Award finalist, and a Nebula Award finalist. A timeless quote. How many people have wondered what Frodo has here? How many of us have needed wise old Gandalf's reminder time and time again. Even now, as I look around at the world, Tolkien's words--Gandalf's words, ring true. A powerful reminder of time, its passing, and ...more
