Why It’s Okay to Grow Distant from Social Media

The other week, I was at a Toronto FC game with my good friend Sam Fiorella, who shares my passion and love for the beautiful game and is also a die-hard TFC fan.

As we sat on the train on the way home from the game, we chatted about numerous things, but one conversation that came up was our reduced use of social media.

Given that we were both early adopters of the various channels, as well as fairly active on them, we spoke of how very different our usage is today, compared to our “busy time...

You’re Not That Big a Deal

So you’re on a couple of thousand Twitter lists. So you write for on online social media news portal. So you got a couple of hundred Likes for your latest blog post.

So what?

In the grand scheme of things, you’re not that big a deal.

If I share your name with Joe Public, they raise eyebrows and look puzzled. If I compare your “claims to fame” with those that are really famous, there’s a huge difference in perception.

You may own a little piece of the Internet, but the Internet’s a pretty big...

Put the Damn Phone Down and Experience the Moment

One of my favourite comedians is Louis C.K. His knack for situational comedy stands him head and shoulders above any other comic, at least for me.

One of his stories is about a time when he was watching one of his kids in the school play, and saw pretty much every other parent with a phone in their hand, pointing it at the stage (warning – strong language).

He’s got a point – we live our lives through six inch screens.

From romantic dinner dates to days at the beach, from trips to the zoo to...

Why We Should Make Mountains Out of Molehills

How do you overcome your mountains? The challenges you face both in business and personally – are you dealing with the small mountains to overcome the big?

There’s a fairly well-known phrase that goes, “Stop making mountains out of molehills.”

For anyone that’s not aware of it, it’s basically saying that there’s no need to make a big deal out of something much smaller.

Usually it’s aimed at people who make a song and dance about the smallest thing.

You know, the drama queens for whom the wron...

No Summer Will Ever Be As Good As This One

Here in Southern Ontario, we finally got our first taste of summer this weekend.

The fact it was the long weekend (we celebrated Victoria Day) was an added bonus, and one that perhaps made the belated sunshine all that more welcome.

As the sun dazzled our eyes and the warmth tanned our skins, and the sound of our kids’ laughter rang happily in the air, it made me think of why we tend to always think no summer will ever be as good as this one.

The Living of a Yearly Life

When I was a kid, summ...

The Consequences of Authenticity

Don’t you think it’s bizarre how we aspire to be natural, and yet to be natural takes an unnatural amount of work?

I recall reading a piece on Jessica Alba once, and how she was asked to do a photoshoot for natural skin. Of course, they wanted to plaster all sorts of makeup on her, just to make her look “natural”.

She declined.

I wonder why we feel the need to put masks on, even when the ask is for less masks?

There are always things we don’t want – or need – to see. But for the most part, we...

Maybe You’re Late For a Good Reason

The other night, I was commuting home on my usual train, and two cyclists got on, a man and a woman (although separately – they weren’t together).

As I sat down in my chair, the male cyclist noticed that the female one was looking a little agitated, and asked her if everything was okay.

“Oh, well, kinda, thanks for asking. I’m just late for a meeting with my friend, and I’m just trying to let her know I’ll be there soon.”

“Ah, that sucks,” replied the guy. “But you know, maybe you’re late fo...

Do Something That Gives You a Tale

Often in life, we sit around waiting for something magical to happen.

We watch movies, or read books, and say to ourselves, “Man, how I wish that could happen to me.” And then we wait.

But we shouldn’t wait around for stuff to happen – we need to make it happen.

You ever ask someone how their weekend was and listen as they respond in great detail? And when they ask you in return, your only response is “well… same ol…’” – get out there!

Do something new. It doesn’t have to be crazy. It doesn’...

On Making the Right Decision

In life and in business, we often ask – and are asked by others – the question,

“How do you make the right decision?”

For me, it comes down to one thing: Will your family be proud?

No matter what you do during the day to make things happen, there is one simple fact:

If you can go home to your wife/husband and children and look them in the eye, and say, “I did the right thing today”…

You made the right decision.

Join the Pure Blogging Movement and Write For Us

Hi there!

At Pure Blogging, the goal is simple – to publish content that matters, both to the blogger and the reader.

While there’s nothing wrong with business blogs, or marketing blogs, or social media blogs, etc., they’re ten to the dozen now. And many have become sterile.

Pure Blogging is the antithesis of that.

As a reader and subscriber, you’ll find only content that truly matters to the blogger. Content that bleeds from the page with emotion and honesty.

Simply put, content the way it’s...
