Behind-the-Scenes Facts about 'Chasing the Hunter' shared by the author, Emily Yager:
1) The Black-billed Magpie, named Zadock, was inspired after a pet Turkey that we used to have on our farm, her name was Toby. Zadock was created as an In Memory and his personality was inspired from / based off her. Why a Magpie and not a Turkey? Well, because Magpies are adorable and way more common to the area than Wild Turkeys.
2) La Faucon’s main cabin layout is from an actual cabin designed by a Proprietor in the 1770s who drew the design in his records and account book.
3) Aria Stonewood, the female lead character, is a near mirror image of my youngest sister, Scooter. She has a lot of personality which influenced the creation of this character and a lot of her made its way in the pages of the story.
4) As a cook/baker, I love reading though old cookbooks and my research included several cookbooks from the era (late 1700s early 1800s). I even went so far as to cook and try most of the recipes that are mentioned in the book. Here is one of the recipes I found that everyone in my family loved.
Biscuits au Chocolat dates to the 17th century and was a popular dessert reserved for special occasions since sugar, flour, chocolate and in some places eggs and cinnamon were specialty items for the fur traders.
****************
Recipe for Biscuits au Chocolat
This is a very light, delicate, cake-like dessert more than a biscuit or cookie.
2 oz unsweetened chocolate grated
8 egg whites, stiffly beaten
1 cup sugar
½ cup flour
8 egg yolks
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt and pepper
Beat chocolate, sugar, & yolks together until thick & creamy. Fold in egg whites. Add flour and gently fold in. Grease muffin cups. Fill half full with chocolate mixture. Bake at 325º F for 15-20 minutes or until tops are just firm. Cool before serving.

5) Birch bark canoes were the main mode of transportation since the rivers were the highways. It could take two weeks just to paddle one hundred miles. In which case, they had to travel nonstop for hours, days, and weeks on end at a grueling pace stopping only for food and sleep. In the first chapter of the book I tried to hint at the exhaustion that Aria felt from travelling hundreds of miles by canoe.
6) The Ojibwe are well known for their intricate and beautiful bead work. Waabizii is a young Anishinabe Ojibwe woman whose name means swan.

ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:
In 1928, Emily's father brings home a book filled with pictures of houses made from kits, and she and her family can hardly decide which one to choose. Finally, Emily will be able to have her very own room, instead of sharing with her little brother. Detailed in scrapbook style, Rosemary and Tom Wells and Dan Andreasen have created a charming story with historical appeal that allows readers to follow the steps Emily and her family take as they design their new home.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Rosemary Wells is the author of a number of popular children's books, most notably the Max and Ruby series which follows the everyday adventures of sibling bunnies - curious three year old Max and bossy seven year old Ruby. She gets the inspiration for Max and Ruby from her two daughters and the experiences they have with friends and school. Her West Highland Terriers Lucy and Snowy have also worked their way into her books, as McDuff and insight for other characters. She has also written Noisy Nora, Yoko, Voyage to the Bunny Planet series, a Christmas Book called Morris's Disappearing Bag and a collected book of illustrations of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs.
In April 2007, her children's book The Gulps featuring illustrations by Marc Brown was released. Also that year she published Red Moon at Sharpsburg, a historical novel featuring a young girl in the American Civil War. 2008 brings Otto Runs For President, followed by Yoko Writes Her Name, scheduled to be published in July.
Wells grew up in Red Bank, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Helen Bamberger.
MY THOUGHTS:
This story is set in 1927 on a farm in Enfield, Kentucky. The narrator is twelve-year old Emily Cartwright. Although the book is in picture book format, the library catalog record lists it as appropriate for Grades 2-5. The vocabulary and assorted opportunities to discuss historical facts from the early part of the twentieth century lead me to recommend this as a middle-grade book.
Tom Wells, Rosemary Wells's husband, was an architect. One of the highlights of the manuscript, in my opinion, is the S.T.E.A.M. education focus on engineering. In the book, the Cartwrights, along with help from their neighbors, build a house from the foundation up. The house is a bungalow kit purchased from Sears, Roebuck & Company for $2,500.00 in early 1927.
Mr. Cartwright and his neighbor, Will, worked on digging a big hole in the ground for the foundation. Then they used boulders out of the ground using two draft horses. The boulders were then split up to make the foundation walls and used mortar to fill the spaces in-between the rock pieces.
When the train hauling their house was scheduled to arrive, many townspeople waited at the railroad station to see the order from Sears, Roebuck & Company pull in. Emily reports that it took three trips in her grandfather's old pickup truck to haul the entire load back to the farm.
Emily continues to report how the walls are raised upright and how she helped by reading the measurements off of the blueprints outloud to her father and neighbor so they could work continuously.
In between reporting the progress on the assembly of the house, Emily shares about the town's Fourth of July celebration. At this point in the story, Emily mentions that their neighbor Will served in 'The Great War'. This would be an excellent gateway to a discussion about America's role in World War I.
Later in the story Emily gives us a blow-by-blow report of how the roof is applied to the house. I wasn't surprised to learn roofs are assembled the same way now as they were back then except back then roofers didn't have staple and nail guns to ease and speed up their work!
After the children had returned to school in early September, the men began working on the interior of the home. Emily's enthusiasm in reporting about the plumbing, electrical, coal-burning furnace and ductwork, plaster walls, yellow pine floor boards, and kitchen linoleum {as written by Rosemary Wells} is contagious.
The book is formatted like an old-time scrapbook with images of old advertisements for ice boxes, houses, washing machines, and cook stoves and other period ephemera scattered among hand-drawings supposedly made by Emily. I felt these visual details add to the whimsy and fun of this book.
Highly-recommended to teachers, parents/grandparents, librarians, museum docents; and fans of Americana, architecture, home appliances. Also, I think fans of the post-World War I to World War II era of American history would enjoy a tween's take on society and industrialization as Emily is fascinated with indoor plumbing, heating, and electricity.
I borrowed this book from the children's section in the local public library.

EXCERPT: from 'Betrayed' by Dee Henderson:
Good people committed murder. Paul had long since accepted that. He’d put a significant number of them in prison. But a good person didn’t often plan the murder in advance, requiring rapid decisions on what to do afterward, leading to mistakes, panic. Janelle had not planned what happened that night. That was what had clicked. Paul leaned back to ponder that thought.
Guilty people gave themselves away—sweating, minds racing, desperate to get rid of the evidence, establish an alibi, spin a story out to friends to cover the time period. Good people who committed murder were unable to walk away and show no signs of it. As an investigator, you didn’t make a decision based on behavior. You worked from the evidence. But the evidence backed up behavior. He had two people in this case file, and they were handling events very differently.
He accepted the bowl of ice cream from his wife, waited till she was seated. “Ann, your best evidence that Tanya—or someone else—did this murder is Janelle’s behavior. The patrol officer found Janelle at home wearing sweats, eating chocolate ice cream out of the carton, and methodically taking apart a scrapbook full of pictures of her with Andrew. The search of her home yielded some things of Andrew’s: jacket, CDs, and books haphazardly thrown together in a box in the hall. Janelle had been purging her apartment of her boyfriend when the patrol officer knocked on her door.”
He saw the surprise cross her face.
“I hadn’t thought about that specifically.”
“Character tells. It always does. Janelle isn’t guilty of this. The patrol officer knocks on her door, and she’s clueless that her boyfriend has been hurt, let alone is dead. If it was the detective who knocked on her door and saw for himself what she was doing, her shock and the tears, he would have kept pushing until he could find another answer.
“But by the time Janelle has been driven in the back of a squad car to the beach, has seen all the flashing lights and cops and medical examiner vehicles, she’s quiet and wound tight and confused, desperately trying to sort out what happened to the man she loves after she left him. The detective sees someone saying she didn’t do it, but missed seeing the physical innocence, that clueless expression that would have told him she was telling the truth. He knows they had a fight, there’s blood on her shoes, the knife she can’t produce is consistent with what stabbed Andrew—he had to go with what was there in front of him. The detective bought the frame.”
“You believe me?”
“Yes.”
Relief flowed across her face.

~ CLEAN WHOLESOME ROMANCE FEATURE ~
~ CLEAN WHOLESOMEROMANCE SITE FEATURE ~
Dear Readers,
I would like to introduce you to a new site targeted at fans of clean wholesome romance. Kathy at I Am a Reader has created a valuable resource for fans of the romance genre which is focused on providing information to readers about authors who write books which are clean in every way. This means no offensive language, no explicit sexual content, and no graphic violence.
What a relief! Clean Wholesome Romance is a place where we can get information about sales, new releases, giveaways, and fun events relating to the books we love to read!
I first met Kathy almost five years ago when she posted an interview and book spotlight about my first inspirational romance book, 'A Holiday Miracle in Apple Blossom' on her original site, I Am a Reader, as part of my first blog tour. Since that time, I have worked with Kathy through her I Am a Reader book tours/events by posting on my blogs about other authors and their books.
One reason I have continued to present content for her company is because I can count on the books to be personally vetted by Kathy before she asks bloggers to post about them.

~ MMGM STEAM MAKE:MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS ~
~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADE
MONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ -- 'MAKE: MUSICAL INVENTIONS- DIY INSTRUMENTS TO TOOT, TAP, CRANK, STRUM, PLUCK and SWITCH ON' -- AUTHOR KATHY CECERI
LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS ABOUT THE BOOK {from Amazon}: People have been playing music on homemade instruments for thousands of years. But creating new instruments is much more than an art form. When you want to make a note sound higher or lower, you have to change the sound waves coming out of the instrument. That's science! When you explore the way different materials produce different sounds, that's engineering. When you speed up or slow down a song, you're counting beats -- using math. And technology makes electronic instruments and devices to record and play back music possible.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Kathy Ceceri is the author of activity books for kids and families including "Musical Inventions," "Paper Inventions" and "Making Simple Robots" from Maker Media, and "Robotics: Discover the Science and Technology" and "Video Games: Design and Code Your Own Adventure" from Nomad Press. Online, she was the Homeschooling Expert for About.com (now Thoughtco), a founding editor of GeekMom.com, and a top writer for the GeekDad blog. When she's not busy writing, Kathy presents hands-on STEAM workshops based on her books for kids and educators.
MY REVIEW:
This well-organized book covers the science of sound, the history of and science behind music, the science behind making musical instruments, and the art of instrument design. It also includes stepped-out instructions for over two dozen projects for middle-grade students and older to make using recycled materials or items one can find at a hardware or thrift store.
Some of my favorite features in this book are the author's interviews with individuals who make musical instruments along with numerous sidebars about historic musical inventors such as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Edison, Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla, Pythagoras, and Vincenzo Galelei {father of Galileo Galelei}.
I played an instrument from fourth grade through junior high and don't remember ever being introduced to the five instrument families. The Sachs-Hornbostel system presented by the author documents how instruments are divided into five families based on the way they vibrate and produce sound. Chordophones, Aerophones, Membranophones, Idiophones, and Electrophones are defined and examples of the instruments included in each family are given.
As with all of the books I've read by this author, the projects are outstanding! Favorites from this book include:
'Pickle-O, a Vegetable Ocarina' made using either a small cucumber, large carrot, sweet potato, zucchini, or regular potato; 'Stick -on-Top 3-String Strummer' {Guitar};'Cookie Tin Steel Drum';'Wrenchophone' {Xylophone};'Thumb Piano';'Experimental Music Box';'Manila Record Player'; and'Pizza Box Radio'.Highly recommended for teachers, parents/grandparents, youth group and scout leaders, teens and adults who love music and sound, and DIYers who are looking for some worthwhile activities to keep themselves occupied on rainy or snowy days!
DISCLOSURE FROM BLOGGER: I received a copy of this paperback from the publisher in exchange for an honest review of the book. I received no compensation to post my thoughts here or on any other site. This book will be donated to my local public library for addition to their children's non-fiction catalog.

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADE
MONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ -- 'THE GIRL WHO DREW BUTTERFLIES: HOW MARIA MERIAN'S ART CHANGED SCIENCE' -- AUTHOR JOYCE SIDMAN
LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS
ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:
Bugs, of all kinds, were considered to be "born of mud" and to be "beasts of the devil." Why would anyone, let alone a girl, want to study and observe them?
One of the first naturalists to observe live insects directly, Maria Sibylla Merian was also one of the first to document the metamorphosis of the butterfly. In this visual nonfiction biography, richly illustrated throughout with full-color original paintings by Merian herself, the Newbery Honor–winning author Joyce Sidman paints her own picture of one of the first female entomologists and a woman who flouted convention in the pursuit of knowledge and her passion for insects.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Joyce Sidman lives in Wayzata, Minnesota.
www.joycesidman.com
MY THOUGHTS:
This is a beautifully-formatted and extensive biography of a pioneer in the fields of science and art. I recommend it as a read-aloud for lower middle-grade students and as independent reading for upper middle-graders.
Maria Merian was born in Frankfurt Germany in the mid-seventeenth century at a time when women were expected to be completely submissive to their fathers, brothers, and/or husbands. They were not permitted to function as independent thinkers with their own careers.
The subject of this biography broke many barriers during her lifetime in the fields of science, art, and business. Her art skills and curiosity about insects and plants astonished me!
At the time, people believed "that all flying, creeping things are pests, born of filth and decay." {Introduction} Butterflies were called 'summer birds', and it was believed that they crept out from under the earth.
Maria was meticulous in her experiments on caterpillars and their metamorphosis into butterflies or moths. She raised her own specimens by hand and studied them carefully. She not only sketched and painted her specimens in their various stages of development, but she preserved her samples in glass boxes for others to enjoy.
When her friends and colleagues saw her sketches and sample boxes after she returned to the Netherlands from living in Surinam for almost two years, they encouraged her to publish her findings. She was one of the original indie publishers. 'Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium' {the metamorphosis of the insects of Surinam} was a 22" high volume filled with paintings illustrating the life cycle of the insects Maria had studied. The insects were posed on their home plants. The book was published in 1705 in Dutch and Latin editions. For example, one colored illustration showed a saturniid moth with its caterpillar, cocoon, and pupa on a banana flowers including young bananas.
As was to be expected, many male scholars at the time discounted her work because Maria did not worry about the classification of her discoveries. They considered her a 'self-taught amateur'. Still others criticized her because she went to Surinam unaccompanied by a male escort. {She had divorced her husband a few years earlier}.
Her paintings of the animals and insects of Surinam in the early eighteenth century are thought to possibly be the only record of the metamorphoses of many Surinam species which are now extinct.
I was inspired by this woman's curiosity, passion, independence, and quest for accuracy in this new {at the time} area of science, natural science. She was a mentor to young women who wanted to work as artists, and she was a leader in every sense of the word.
Maria's artwork, which fills the pages of this biography, is absolutely stunning in my opinion. I love botanical prints and paintings of animals of all types so this book was a visual feast for me. I believe children will find it stimulating and interesting. Maria Merian was one talented lady who shared her gifts with the world. I believe she would be thrilled to learn young readers are still enjoying her artwork over three hundred years after her death.
There is an excellent 'Butterfly Glossary' preceding the Introduction to this book. Back matter includes an engaging 'Author's Note', a detailed Timeline, Quote Sources, Selected Bibliography, and Acknowledgments page.
Highly-recommended for fans of women's studies, science history, seventeenth and eighteenth century European history, art, and botanical art. NOTE: Please read my caveat about the content of this book in the following 'Content Caution' section before you read this book to or allow your middle-grade student to read this book independently.
I borrowed this book from the non-fiction Biography shelves in the Children's section of the local public library.
CONTENT CAUTION: I want to mention that in the sidebar printed on page 90 there are three topics which you will want to be aware of before sharing this book with children. 1.) Slavery--the poor treatment of Amerindians and Africans in the Dutch colony of Surinam where Maria and her daughter lived and studied for almost two years. 2.) The fact that slaves used a particular seed to abort their children so these children would not have to live their lives in slavery. 3.) Suicide--Adult slaves killed themselves because of their religious beliefs about being born again into freedom in their native country. *It is noted that when Maria visited Surinam to conduct scientific research and document it with words and paintings she was 'shocked and appalled' at what she found there.

MONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ -- 'THE GIRL WHO DREW BUTTERFLIES: HOW MARIA MERIAN'S ART CHANGED SCIENCE' -- AUTHOR JOYCE SIDMAN
LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS
ABOUT THE BOOK {from Goodreads}:Bugs, of all kinds, were considered to be "born of mud" and to be "beasts of the devil." Why would anyone, let alone a girl, want to study and observe them?
One of the first naturalists to observe live insects directly, Maria Sibylla Merian was also one of the first to document the metamorphosis of the butterfly. In this visual nonfiction biography, richly illustrated throughout with full-color original paintings by Merian herself, the Newbery Honor–winning author Joyce Sidman paints her own picture of one of the first female entomologists and a woman who flouted convention in the pursuit of knowledge and her passion for insects.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Joyce Sidman lives in Wayzata, Minnesota.
