🐴 ~ AUTHOR INTERVIEW WITH SUSAN COUNT ~ 🐴June: Welcome to 'Reading, Writing& Stitch-Metic', Susan. Congratulations on the recent release of yourmiddle-grade novel, 'Hannah's Pony Twist'!
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴
June: Please tell us how youcreated your setting and developed the characters for this book.
Susan: The setting for Hannah’s Pony Twist is the fictional Dream Pony Stables. This barn is the hub of all the stories in the series. Each character and theirpony has their own book, then they go forward to play a role in the subsequentbooks. The riding friends are close knit and supportive. The tension andconflict in each story comes as the characters struggle to overcome what keepsthem from their heart’s desire.
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴
June: Since this book involveshorses, I was wondering when you began riding horses? What led you to write abook about the Hannah and Freckles? Is the story inspired by real events?
Susan: I always loved horses and read every horse book available to me as agirl. At fifteen, I would save every dime from my babysitting jobs to rent ahorse for a trail ride. Then at seventeen, I became a working student at MeyerRemount Farm in Leavenworth, Ks. where I learned to properly ride and jump. Ibought my first horse when I was twenty-one. Today, I am partial to smoothgaited horses and am owned by a Rocky Mountain Horse.
Hannah’s story flowed from the previousbook as Grace is her best friend. All the horse events are loosely based onreal life struggles. For instance in this book, I highlight a product that Iused on my bunny when a bobcat grabbed her and punctured her skull. From there,I’ve used it many times on various equine injuries.
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴
June: Who is your favoritecharacter in the story? Why is this person or animal your favorite?
Susan: I adore Freckles and loved writing a couple scenes in his voice. He is acharacter and knows his mission in life is to take care of his girl.
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴
June: What or who inspired you tobecome an author?
Susan: Composing was always my gift, but I wrote my first novel in 2013. It wasinspired by my granddaughter, Selah, at three years old, leading our preciouspaint horse around the pasture with just a rope around his neck. Now I haveeleven novels for children ages 8–14.
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴
June: When you write a book, doyou outline the entire story, or do you have a different way of organizing yourplot, characters, etc.? Do you always know the ending of your story before youbegin putting things down on paper, or into your computer?
Susan: Once I figure out who mycharacter is and what she wants more than anything, I make post-it-notes forplot points. Every writing session, I read some of what I wrote previously and, with my sights set on the goal (the ending), craft one obstacle after another.
While I love the initial composing ofstory, my super power is editing story. Making sure the character has a cleargoal and that the obstacles are real and relatable.
I will write and rewrite the firstchapter so many times I know it by heart. And still, sometimes, it will turnout not to be the actually first chapter. My goal is to introduce the characterso that the reader relates to her immediately. It’s important to me that whenthe incident happens that sets her whole world upside down, the reader alreadycares about the character and what terrible thing just happened to her.
Most all my writing is done on an Applecomputer that my son gifted me. He felt like I was trying to create witharchaic tools, and because he is generous like that.
🐴🐎🍀🌸🐴June: Thank you very much for spending some time with us chatting about yourwriting life and your newest release, 'Hannah's Pony Twist.' Best wishes for asuccessful book launch, Susan.
Susan: Thank you kindly.

EXCERPT:
She had never seen such a competent mannot care if he wasn’t in charge. Even when she, a woman, was taking the leadover him. Such an attitude could signal a lack of confidence. But he clearlyhad confidence in abundance. He would be intimidated by her if he were unsureof himself, as many people were. Like they did, he would recoil from her orchallenge her to cut her down to his size. He clearly felt he had nothing toprove.
What had made him such a unique man?Full of confidence and skill with no ego to match it. Possessing a rare comfortin his own skin. A contentment and calm that defined him at all times, eventhough he appeared to genuinely care about the children and understand thedanger.
But his knowledge of her background, coupled with the occurrence that had just taken place—the moment when he mayhave seen much more than she’d intended, much more than anyone ever had—thatmade him one of the most dangerous men of her acquaintance.
She would not let him get that closeagain. And she would make him forget what he had seen.

Emory’sgaze flew to Hunter’s. His contorted expression revealed the same thought ashers.
Theystill had a killer to catch.
Ifthey didn’t, whoever had poisoned Rose Watson would get away with it.
Thecowbell clanged, announcing breakfast.
Thirtyminutes later, after yummy pancakes, Autumn rose from the table. "Time toget the turkey in the oven and then the kids can open their gifts."
TheirChristmas feast finished mid-afternoon after the kids enjoyed playing withtheir new toys. The group had scattered to finish packing, since they wereleaving shortly.
"Sissy, can you get me some canned peaches from the root cellar?" Autumn asked. "Iwant to make a fresh peach cobbler for tonight. We’re gonna have a quietevening. Joel, can you get more firewood? Hunter, can you stoke the fire in theliving room? I don’t want it going out."
"Yes,Mom." Emory saluted before walking into the hallway and snatching the coatfrom the last hook. She put it on and stuffed her hands into the pockets.
Andfingered a velvet bag. Wait—what?
Shelooked closer at the coat. Same dark color as hers, but not hers. Emory pulledthe bag out and opened it, dropping the contents into her hand. Pearls. A rubyring. An emerald necklace.
RoseWatson’s jewelry, but whose coat was Emory wearing?
"Iwish you hadn’t done that," a sinister voice whispered.
Emorygasped and pivoted, staring down the barrel of a shotgun.
Andinto the eyes of the Double H Ranch’s killer.

From "LoveAcross Time" by Helena Smrcek
Beth took her heavy coat off the hook inthe staff room and slipped into it. It was the first day of December, and theEnglish winter had a bite. The damp weather seemed to burrow straight into herbones. She picked up the remnants of her first attempt at decorating the wardfor Christmas. The men who had rushed in earlier that afternoon had knockedover the coffee tin she used as a vase and trampled over the evergreenbranches. She’d toss them back into the woods on her way to the nurses’accommodations and pick fresh ones as she walked to the hospital tomorrowmorning. The men in her hospital should have something festive to look at, ifonly twigs and berries.
Bethtook her warm gloves out of her purse, then quietly closed the staff room doorbehind her, mindful of the injured.
Asshe walked to the front door, she passed the night nurse and Beth’s goodfriend, Henrietta, carrying a tray of tea to the ward.
Bethtouched Henrietta’s arm. "Send for me if there is an emergency."
"Itwill be a quiet night. The fog is thick today. The night bombers are grounded."
"Agood night’s sleep sounds fabulous."
"Seeyou in the morning," Henrietta said, her voice already weary.
Theywere all tired. Exhausted. The airmen, their crews, ground personnel, supportstaff, doctors, and nurses. How much longer could this go on?

From "WhereMy Heart Belongs" by Melanie Stevenson
I turn towards a coffee shop, head down to block the wind, intending tostep inside to call an Uber. I may as well have ice skates on, as I have takento sliding my shoes along the ground instead of actually lifting them. The lastthing I need is a concussion.
It’s in this assumed position that I skid into a post, which knocks me offbalance. I grasp it to right myself, but it’s not attached to the ground. Me,the post, and whatever is hanging from the post tip over.
Now I’m laying prostrate in an ice puddle among, inexplicably, a barrageof coins and bills. I lift my head to watch my suitcase skid down the hill, bump over the sidewalk, and launch off the side of a staircase. It disappearsover the edge alongside the plastic ball of money.
Hello day of the fallen books, my old friend.
As if that isn’t bad enough, I look up and, wait for it, the snow bootsin my line of vision belong to an exceedingly tall Santa Claus who, mid-ring ofa bell dangling from his hand, is staring down at me with dazzling blue eyes.

The first rehearsal was in two hours. How was she going to get there? Could she hitchhike?
Lucy shuddered at the thought of whather dad—and August—would have to say about that. She did know exactly what AnneShirley would have to say about this situation. This is the most tragical thingthat has ever happened to me. A tear of frustration slid down her cheek andonto the steering wheel, leaving a splotch in the dust. Like her dreams.Crumbled to death in the dust. Her forehead still pressed to the center of thewheel, Lucy sighed.
A soft rapping against her window yankedher from her thoughts, and she swiped at her cheek as she straightened. August.Lucy reached for the manual handle and lowered the glass an inch. "I’mfine."
"Clearly." His lips twitched. "AnythingI can do?"
His amusement was not contagious. "Thankyou for your offer of assistance, Mr. Dorey, but it is not required."
He let out a short laugh. "Gettinginto character already, I see." Resting a hand on the roof of the car, heducked a little to peer through the window. "Look. I was wrong to say thiscar was worth a penny."
"Thank you," she said archly, both hands still on the steering wheel.
"And by wrong, I mean generous."

About Hunted for the Holidays
*********
Keeping out of sightis the only way to stay alive. When Shae Evans spots a familiar face at a Christmas pageant, she knows her witness-protection cover has been blown. Six years ago, her testimony put a crime boss away for life, but his vengeful son never stopped looking for her. Fleeing with her daughter, Shae accepts protection from former FBI agent Mason Payne—her child’s secret father. Now they’re only seconds ahead of the ruthless crime family who want Shae silenced forever. With threats everywhere, will they live to see the New Year? From Love Inspired Suspense: Courage. Danger. Faith.
*********
EXCERPT from Chapter One:
Cheers erupted as Gracie Evans,Shae’s five-year-old daughter, smiled at the audience, waved and did a littleimpromptu dance that had nothing to do with her role as a sheep in the church’sannual Christmas pageant. Her long, dark ponytail swung, and the stage lightsmade her sapphire eyes sparkle. Some of the older actors glanced at thedirector, then continued with their lines as Gracie jumped and wiggled, hermischievous grin charming the cheering crowd. Shae applauded loudly with therest of the families. “Go, Gracie!”
Seconds later, an angel corralledthe little girl and guided her to her proper position, and Shae checked herphone camera to be sure it was still recording. As she looked back up,satisfied she hadn’t missed any of the theatrics, her gaze landed on two mendressed in dark suits standing to the side of the auditorium, their expressionsharsh as they scanned the spectators rather than watching the action on stage.
No! For just an instant, recognition flared, followedalmost immediately by uncertainty. Even if one of them did look familiar, whowas to say it was someone from her past? Perhaps she’d met one of these menafter relocating to Boggy Meadows. Still…fear flooded her system.
Because if it was someone frombefore… How could they have found her? They couldn’t have. It wasn’t possible. At least, that was what the marshals had assured her when they’d placed her inthe witness protection program six years ago. Besides, Quentin Kincaid was inprison and would be for the rest of his life, thanks in large part to Shae’stestimony. Could he have escaped?
In some part of her mind, sheequated the applause and jubilation surrounding her with Gracie and knew herdaughter must be drawing attention again, but Shae had missed it, distracted bywhat could be a death sentence for them both. She refocused the camera on thestage, needing to capture what might be their last moment of normalcy beforethe past caught up with her. No use. She held her phone up to block her facebut marked the men’s progress up the side aisle.
She plastered on a smile, but hercheers caught in her throat, nearly choking her. Her mouth went dry, then hershouts turned internal. She had to get her daughter off that stage and out ofthere.
Sweat beaded Shae’s brow. She swipedat it with the back of her wrist and glanced at the clock. Run and risk drawingattention? Or stay put until the show ended and mix with the crowd to make herescape?
Maybe the two men had just arrivedlate and were searching for family members, but then why were the little hairson the back of her neck standing straight up? The goose bumps racing across herskin had nothing to do with the air-conditioning, of that she had no doubt. Asshe waited for the pageant to end and the actors to take their bows, Shaeplanned escape routes and calculated the distance to exits until the curtainwas finally dragged closed.
Keeping her head down and faceaverted behind the bouquet she’d brought Gracie, she slung her oversize bagonto her shoulder, slid into the stream of spectators and started toward thecafeteria, where other parents had already begun to gather.

CHARACTER GUEST POSTby Author Deena Alexander'On the Run' By: Mason Payne
WhenI got word that Shae Evans, the woman I loved and had to leave behind in orderto seek justice, was in danger, I dropped everything and fled to her side. Imight not have done right by her six years ago, might have abandoned her whenshe needed me the most, but no way would I let the crime boss she was braveenough to help put behind bars seek revenge on her. Though I thought I’dprepared myself to see her again, nothing could have prepared me for the impactthe sight of her would have on me. She stood like a warrior, every bit asbeautiful and courageous as I remembered her. Long, dark hair hung in waves, framing a determined expression. Eyes the color of melted chocolate and widewith fear stared back at me, and in one shaky hand she held a handgun aimeddirectly at my head. She took my breath away.
BeforeI could come to terms with seeing her again, I turned my head, and my life wentinto instant upheaval. Because the eyes staring back at me from a little girlwho couldn’t be more than around five years old were unmistakably my own. Itdidn’t take long for me to realize what a horrible mistake I’d made leavingher. I’d not only abandoned Shae, but I must have left her pregnant and alonewith my child. Then came the anger. How could Shae not have found a way to letme know I had a daughter?Beforeany of my out-of-control emotions can even fully register, two gunmen openfire, and I’m forced to go on the run with the only woman I’ve ever loved andthe child I never knew existed. But, even with help from the JamesonInvestigations team I now work with, I have no idea if I can save them from theman who is intent on seeing them dead. And when we flee, and my car skids off arickety bridge into the swampy water below, my faith wavers. With a stormcoming, darkness surrounding us, and nowhere to run, we are forced to fleethrough the swamp with killers on our heels. Now, all that matters is seeingShae and Gracie safe, and things don’t look promising. *********
MY REVIEW:
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
A complex mystery combined with traumaand loss from the past creates a well-written, heart-pounding heartwarmingstory . . .
I was immediately drawn into this storywhen single mother Shae Evans spots a familiar face at her daughter's Christmaspageant. This story quickly gains momentum when former FBI agent Mason Paynebecomes involved in the protection of his former love, Shae Evans, and herfive-year-old daughter, Gracie.
After several years in witness protection,Shae is being stalked again. The question is who is after Shae this time? Asthe threesome and their support team from Jameson Investigations try to stayahead of whoever is tracking them, the tension never lets up. Who is after themand what is their motivation?
Mason and Shae cannot deny their mutual attractionand strong bond even though they haven't communicated or seen each other in thepast six years. With all of the action and danger in this plot, the pairdoesn't have much time to discuss their relationship.
Filled with many twists and turns, possible villains, and dangerous situations, fans of this genre will sit on theedge of their seats as the suspense is ramped up in the final few chapters ofthe book.
Author Deena Alexander's attention tocharacter development, intricate plots, and excellent action scenes makes her workstand out in this genre. In this book especially, she created many cleveraction and escape scenes which left me shaking my head. As a reader, I neverknow what to expect next while reading one of her stories—and that's exactlywhy I enjoy reading inspirational romantic suspense. This book is completelyclean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from theauthor through Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. All of my opinions andthoughts shared here are solely my own.

Title: Frittered Moments
Series: Love and Danger in St. Claire #5
Author: Allison Pearl
Publisher: Anaiah Press, LLC
Release Date: October 23, 2023
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Deputy US Marshal, Perry Cole is back in the small town of St. Claire, and he didn’t come alone. Joined by the FBI and a witness who could crack his case wide open, Perry hopes to finally track down one of the most elusive criminals he’s ever targeted. But just as the hunt begins, a murder derails his plans. Now he must partner with the cute-but-snarky Deputy Sheriff Erin Kaminski to find the killer. Perry quickly finds himself getting distracted by the feelings Erin stirs up in him, and if he doesn’t get his head back in the game, one of them may end up at the top of the murderer’s hit list.
The locals wanted someone else for the Deputy Sheriff position, but Erin Kaminski knows in her heart that St. Claire is where she’s meant to be. And finally, just as she becomes a familiar face to the locals, the FBI and US Marshals show up, making trouble. She wants them to do their job and leave, and so she becomes their local liaison. But when someone turns up dead, she wants to be the one calling the investigative shots. Instead, she’s partnered with the admittedly charming, but overly skeptical, marshal who thinks her faith is nothing but fantasy. With Perry’s constant questions and distracting lure, she needs to keep her head clear enough to see the danger creeping her way—or she’ll end up losing everything.
🍩🔍⌚🔦💗🍩🔍⌚🔦💗🍩
EXCERPT:
“What are youthinking?” Perry asked Erin.
“The different criminals the Snitch ripped off over the spanof decades, all the dangerous types she would’ve come across from a life spentin organized crime, even members of law enforcement at every level who sheroutinely humiliated. That’s hundreds of people with a motive to kill LaneyHicks, and yet, something tells me her murderer lives right here in St.Claire.”
Her gaze left the couple and moved to Perry. Her deep browneyes widened. She studied him, and he saw a flash of vulnerability and worry. Likeshe feared what the door that’d been opened would lead to. Was this aninvoluntary crack in her assertive foot-always-on-the-gas attitude, or was thistransparency? A fearlessness to not balk or deny the hard truths in life. Aneed to put her at ease swelled inside him. Perry swallowed.
“Sounds like you’ve done all the hard work, then.” Afeather-sized wisp of her dark chocolate hair floated on a gust of icy wind.
“How do you figure?”
“You’ve eliminated the majority of our suspect list.” Henudged her with an elbow. “We’ll probably have this wrapped up by suppertime.”
She crinkled her nose as though deciding whether he wasbeing serious and then chuckled. “If we manage that, dinner’s on you.”
Perry winked. “Deal.”

Murder, She Wrote: A Killer Christmas Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. Allrights reserved. ChapterOneIt was a gloomy Monday morning ten days before Thanksgiving, and my clock radiowoke me to the tune of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." Theycould at least wait until the day after Thanksgiving, I thought grumpily as Ithrew back the bedcovers and slipped into my flannel robe.
I opened the curtains and was pleased to see that the snow that had beenforecast to fall overnight had turned out to be less than predicted. Powderywhite flakes dusted the grass and the bare tree branches just enough to glistenagainst the rising sun. Still, I was glad that I had accepted the invitation ofmy friend and our town's favorite doctor, Seth Hazlitt, to pick me up and driveme to our breakfast date at Mara's Luncheonette, a warm and comfy restaurantthat sat high on the wharf bordering the inlet that gave our town, Cabot Cove, its name. I could see ice patches on the street, which was certainly not encouragingfor bike riding, my usual method of transportation.
Forty-five minutes later, Seth turned the corner onto Candlewood Lane just as Iopened my front door. I scurried into the car and was grateful he had set theheater to high.
We spent the short ride to Mara's talking about the weather, which was a topicthat anyone who lived in coastal Maine would agree was always worthy ofdiscussion, and in a matter of minutes, Seth was opening the door to Mara's andushering me inside, where the smell of fresh coffee and the sizzle of bacon onthe grill welcomed us.
Dan Andrews, editor of the Cabot Cove Gazette, and our town sheriff, MortMetzger, were sitting at our usual table, which was toward the middle of thelong room, in the first row of tables alongside stools occupied by fishermenand other local folks who wanted to sit at the counter so they could catch anygossip someone happened to bring in with their appetite for breakfast or athermos to be filled with hot coffee.
As soon as our hellos and good mornings were over, Dan immediately started aconversation that could lead the four of us to the kind of idle gossip andspeculation we usually left to Mara's other patrons. Dan asked if any of us hadreceived an email from our town's mayor, Jim Shevlin, asking that we attend ameeting concerning this year's Christmas festivities.
Mort said he had received it, but then he immediately slipped into stillanother holiday subject. "Yep. It was at the top of my email list thismorning, right above the Thanksgiving special sales notice from CharlesDepartment Store. And right up top, that notice had an ad for an eleven-pieceset of Cuisinart professional-grade pots and pans. Wouldn't that make a dandyChristmas present for someone who loves to experiment in the kitchen as much asMaureen does?"
Seth shook his head and began a loud and lengthy chortle. "As long as Iwas married to Ruth, I only made that mistake once. I bought what the salesmanassured me was the newest, most up-to-date vacuum cleaner on the market, and heinsisted my wife would absolutely love it.
"After she unwrapped her present, Ruth took one look at the box, which hada picture of a lady, complete with apron and a huge smile, hugging a vacuum, and she reminded me in no uncertain terms that she was my wife, not myhousekeeper. She immediately ordered me to return the vacuum cleaner and buy amore suitable Christmas present. I got myself out of trouble with a necklacethat cost twice the price of the vacuum but was worth every penny for the peaceit brought. Comes to Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, I warn you to never, ever buy your wife something for the house." Seth shook his head toemphasize the warning. "I guarantee you will get more grief than you canimagine."
Mort shifted his eyes to me. I nodded. I was in full agreement with Seth butsmiled to soften the blow. "Best to follow the doctor's orders."
"With your backing Doc up, Mrs. F., I'm convinced. I'll go and scan theadverts for something better," Mort said.
Mara came to our table, coffeepot in hand, and filled my cup, then Seth's. Thenshe offered Mort and Dan refills. Mort gladly held up his cup, while Dan shookhis head and placed a hand over his, the universal signal for "No, thankyou." Done pouring, Mara took a step back so she could see all four of us."Hmm, cold morning, a bit of snow on the ground . . . Let me guess-fourshort stacks of blueberry pancakes with a side of bacon each for Mort andDan."
"Ayuh, Mara . . ." Seth began, but Mara cut him off.
"I know, Doc, delicious as my pancakes are without it, you always wantextra butter on your stack." That was Mara's way of reminding us that herblueberry pancakes were consistently lauded all over Maine and in ourneighboring states of Vermont and New Hampshire. She'd won so many prizes atcounty fairs that there was barely a smidgen of space left to display any moreawards on the wall next to the front door.
Oblivious to Mara's exhibit of frustration with his constant reminders that hewanted extra butter, Seth gave her a satisfied grin and a brief nod.
While we waited for our pancakes, Dan again brought up the email he'd receivedfrom Mayor Jim Shevlin. "I don't understand why we are meeting again. Ithought we'd already finished ironing out who will take care of what. It's notlike we've never done this before. I am the new kid in town, and even I canrecite who does what and when they do it. Hasn't changed an iota since I gothere."
Although I hadn't checked my email that morning, I assumed that if Dan and Mortgot a meeting notice, I did as well, so it didn't strike me as odd when Sethsaid he'd received one.
"I'm with you, Dan," he said. "I thought we met simply toreaffirm everyone's assignments for the pageant play as well as the ChristmasDay parade. I, for one, am mighty glad that all I have to do is pick up ClaraWizzenhunt from her assisted living center, drive her to the parade site, andsettle her in the Founders' Carriage before the parade starts. Then I will dashto the finish line to help her alight from the rig and escort her to thebasement of the Presbyterian church, where parade participants will enjoy acelebratory breakfast. Once I return her to Shady Willows, my contribution tothe Cabot Cove Christmas festivities will be done."
I could see that a worry had crossed Seth's mind, because he furrowed his browand pursed his lips, and then he said, "Oh, I forgot to ask Mara if shewill be making her blueberry pancakes this year. A few years back, she went tovisit some relatives in Bangor for the holidays, and, well, the post-paradebreakfast just wasn't the same."
I looked up and saw Mara heading our way, carrying a tray filled with plates ofblueberry pancakes, each with steam twirling from the top. Before she couldassure Seth that there was a side of extra butter tucked against the pancakeson his plate, Seth asked if she would be making pancakes in the church kitchenfor the festivities after the parade.
"Of course I will. Always do when I am in town. Honestly, I missed oneparade five years ago, and folks are still complaining." She put Seth'splate in front of him, allowing it to bang against the chrome tabletop a littlemore loudly than usual. Next was my plate, which she set down more gently infront of me while she changed the subject. "I suppose you heard the news,Jessica. Albert Pellecchia has come back to Cabot Cove. As I recall, wasn't hea student of yours?"
"Oh, he certainly was. And I cheerfully confess he was one of myfavorites. As a student, he had a creative and inquisitive mind, traits thatalways delight teachers, especially English teachers like me. Albert's interestin literature was always inventive and often challenging. He kept me on mytoes, I can tell you. Do you know if he is in town for a holiday visit, or ishe home for good?"
"I would guess that Albert is planning on staying for a long while. Iheard through the grapevine"-Mara gave a side-eyed glance at the folkssitting on the counter stools, one of our town's most reliablegrapevines-"that he is planning on renovating the house he grew up in.Several of my most faithful 'burgers for lunch' customers are talking about thebids they are submitting for various jobs-new roof, stormproof windows, theusual things a house needs when it has been vacant for a long while."
"Still, he could be upgrading it in order to sell. As I recall, thePellecchia place is a small house, but it sits on an oversized piece ofproperty. With a bit of a sprucing up, a modernization if you will, it couldbring quite a pretty penny." Seth was never one to ignore the financialside of things.
"Might be"-Mara shrugged-"but I don't think so. Albert seems tobe settling into community life again. For one thing, he is volunteering at thehomeless shelter at the edge of town. I know because he and I work in the kitchenon the same shift twice a week." Mara ended the conversation with"Enjoy your breakfast" and hurried to take a meal order from twopeople who had just sat down at a nearby table.
We ate in silence for a few minutes, each of us savoring the perfection ofMara's pancakes, and then Mort said, "Okay, Doc, so we know you have yourassignment for the Christmas parade. What about you, Mrs. F.? Parade orpageant?"
"I suppose I could say a little of both. Doris Ann, over at the library, has asked me to ride on the library float and wave to the onlookers. I amalways glad to participate in anything the library does, but I was slightlytaken aback when she told me that this year's float theme is science fiction. When I said I didn't understand why she thought I would be a good fit, DorisAnn laughed and said she could always tuck some of my book jackets in the midstof the Christmas decorations along with the covers of books by Isaac Asimov,Ray Bradbury, and H. G. Wells, and no one would know the difference. I supposeshe had a point there."
Everyone laughed and Dan asked, "You said you were involved in bothactivities. What is your role in the pageant?"
"Oh, I don't have a role, at least not onstage. I simply volunteered tohelp the younger participants memorize their speaking parts. We teachers have aknack for memorization." I smiled, thinking back again to my career as ahigh school English teacher, a challenging job, but I loved every minute.
"At least we still have the parade and the pageant," Seth said."I remember when we celebrated for weeks on end both before and afterDecember twenty-fifth. In those days, the holiday season was really a seasonand not limited to two events only a few days apart."
"Times have changed," Mort said.
Before Seth could bemoan that very fact, I jumped in. "Speaking of time, Ihave an appointment for a haircut in a very few minutes. Can anyone give me aride to Loretta's Beauty Parlor?"
Dan Andrews pushed his plate toward midtable. "I'd be happy to. I'mfinished eating, and I will be passing right by Loretta's on the way to myoffice."
We said good-bye to Mort and Seth, stopped at the register to pay Mara, andwere on our way.
When Dan pulled up in front of the beauty parlor, he said, "I have beenthinking about this Christmas season, and I must admit Seth has a point. Thereare so many people in Cabot Cove willing to help with every community project,it seems to defy belief that we, as a community, do so little during theholidays. Maybe that is exactly what Jim Shevlin wants to talk about attomorrow's meeting."
"Well, if that's so, I guarantee that Seth will be the first to grumblethat he has enough to do chauffeuring Clara Wizzenhunt to and from theparade," I said. Then I thanked Dan for the ride, got out of the car, andheaded for Loretta's pink-trimmed door.

“Oh no, Pa!” I sat on his bed and held his hand. “What’swrong? Can I get a doctor for you? Don’t leave me, Pa!”
“Em. No time. It’s my heart.” Tavis grimaced as he spokewith labored breaths. “Please. Take my Bible. Stay with my dad in Boston. Yourgrandfather. Silas O’Connor. Lithographer. Remember?”
My body shook uncontrollably, but I held in tears as Ilistened. “Yes, Pa. Anything else?”
“Promise me. Let him get to know you - love you as I do.Family is important.” He stopped to gather what little strength remained. “Takethe gun he gave to me. Initials on the handle - his and mine. Proof of who youare. Tell him I love him.” His last words were, “Have courage. Don’t forget,God will be with you. Love you, Em.” His breathing stopped.

Izzy observed themalamute. “She’s not a protection dog, right?”
“No, but she sensesdanger from the other two and likes you. I need to follow the dogs. Evacuate.”Austin ran toward the station’s front office where Goose and Thor had headed.
“Not a chance.”Izzy followed with Névé at her heels.
Constables andHRPD’s civilian staff hustled to the exit. Their tortured expressions revealedeveryone’s horror. Izzy couldn’t remember a time when their station had beenattacked in this magnitude.
Was it all herfault?
Thor’s heightenedbark cut off her thoughts.
Izzy hurried tocatch up to the K-9s and Austin. She stepped inside the bullpen.
Thor sat a few feetaway from a desk. Her desk.
“Thor, Goose, retreat!” Austin’s forceful commands stopped Izzy in her tracks.
It was then shenoticed a backpack under her chair. A beeping filled the room, thenintensified.
Izzy’s heartbeatslammed in her chest. The bomb was about to blow.

Seconds later athunderous explosion rocked the building, sending debris pelting through thestation and out the shattered front glass doors.
The impact shovedIzzy to her knees on the snowy walkway. The attack revealed one thing.
None of them were safe.
MY REVIEW:
🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
From the first page to the last, this complex story keeps readerson high alert with action, danger, and emotion . . .
I have read several of this author's Love Inspired Suspensenovels. While I enjoyed each of the stories, this book is my favorite.
Police constable Izzy Tremblay is trying to recover from herbeloved father's unexpected death. The two were close, and she is havingdifficulty accepting the fact that her otherwise healthy father died withoutwarning. Her family and co-workers kept telling her it was a cardiac event thatkilled her beloved father, but she is investigating his death to discover thetruth.
When her former partner, Austin Murray, becomes involved in thecase, Izzy cannot seem to release the bitter feelings she has for Austin aftera tragic incident occurred ten years ago. Austin resigned from the policedepartment and is now the owner of a K-9 ranch where dogs are trained to performvarious law enforcement and service jobs.
One of my favorite characters in the story was Austin'swell-trained malamute, Névé. This dog connects immediately with Izzy, andbecomes her constant companion and protector. I'm continually amazed by theintelligence and physical abilities of these canines. Névé brought energy andan innate desire to help her handlers to all of her appearances in theplot.
Fans of this genre will appreciate the author's deft use of falseclues, distractions, dead ends, and a multitude of villains to lead readers ona cat and mouse adventure that is not resolved in full until the very end ofthe book.
As they work through the evidence in search of answers, Austin andIzzy grow closer as they realize that those personal feelings they felt foreach other ten years ago were genuine and that they are still present. Thefaith thread throughout this story was inspirational and well-written.
I read a lot of books in this genre, and I feel the last half ofthis book is the best ending to a romantic suspense novel that I've read in along time. The story is completely clean in language and content.
I received a copy of this book from the author as a member of herlaunch team. All of my opinions and thoughts shared here are solely my own.

Jane Austen mysteries have become a popular subgenre of Austen variations, but this is more than just a trend. Austen was a masterful storyteller who embedded clues within her stories for her readers to follow, inviting readers to read between the lines and "gather the evidence" to follow her intricate plotlines.
In this anthology, various authors who are also fans and admirers of Austen's work have taken the challenge to add some mystery to Austen's stories and characters. From Regency sequels to film noir retellings to cozy art heists, Crime andCulpability: A Jane Austen Mystery Anthology explores the many faces of Austen and all of herenigmas.
Featuring stories by Regina Jeffers, Riana Everly, Jeanette Watts, Michael Rands, Linne Elizabeth, Emma Dalgety, and Elizabeth Gilliland, with a foreword by Regina Jeffers and an introduction by Elizabeth Gilliland Rands.

Author Guest Post Written by Author Riana Everly
Hello everyone,
For those who don’t know me, I’m Riana Everly, and I write historical romance, contemporary romance, and historical mysteries. I’m so thrilled to have myshort story included in this great collection, Crime & Culpability, and I’dlove to tell you a bit about myself and my story.
I have to blame my love of mystery on my mother, who handed me a Secret Seven book by Enid Blyton when I was juststarting to read. Those stories about seven children and their investigationshooked me almost from the first page, and well, I’m an addict with no intentionof getting help!
Once we moved to Canada and British children’sfiction was a bit harder to get, I moved on to Nancy Drew, and then to AgathaChristie. I loved matching my wits with Hercule Poirot and seeing if I couldspot those elusive clues that pointed to the culprit before the little Belgiandetective made his pronouncement. I devoured the classics (Ngaio Marsh is myfavourite of that elite cadre of mystery authors, with her swoony DetectiveAlleyn), and raided the library shelves in search of whatever was new thatweek. PD James, Sara Paretsky, Caroline Graham, Alexander McCall Smith, and somany other brilliant authors… I couldn’t get enough.
My favourites, of course, were the ones that letthe reader in on all the clues, even if we didn’t know it, letting us solve themystery along with the literary detectives. Those that concealed the bigsurprise until the very end, I thought, were not quite fair, and a little voiceinside me said, “you can do better.”
But I silenced that voice. I couldn’t write amystery. No way.
Or could I? There was only one way to find out.
It was a long time before I was brave enough to putpen to paper for a whodunnit, but I had a lot of inspiration in the unlikelyform of Jane Austen.
Yes, that Jane Austen, she of the muddypetticoats and grumpy-but-rich gentlemen. Also, creator of one of my favouriteoverlooked characters, Mary Bennet.
In Pride and Prejudice, Mary is theneglected middle sister, the one who isn’t gorgeous and witty like her oldersisters, or bubbly and flirty like the younger two. She’s serious and studious, preferring Scarlatti to scandals, and totally ignored by everyone. Also, fromhow I read her, desperate for attention.
But if no one pays any attention to Mary, shemust see all sorts of things no one thinks about. And when a problem arises, perhaps some of what she’s seen can lead to a solution. And all that readingand pontificating might give her the intellectual edge and the confidence tosay what she knows.
Of course, Mary can’t do this alone. She’s just amiddling country gentleman’s middle child, an imperfectly educated teenagerwith no connections and no authority. And so, enter one of my favouritecharacters, a young London investigator named Alexander Lyons, who listens toMary, possibly for the first time in her life. Together, they’re a terrificmystery-solving duo, and I’ve loved writing about their adventures.
You can read more about Mary and Alexander in my growingMiss Mary Investigates series, as they solve mysteries through JaneAusten’s brilliant novels.
In my contribution to Crime &Culpability, Mary and Alexander are together once more. It’s supposedto be a pleasant diversion, an afternoon at the races, but when disasterstrikes and one of Mr Darcy’s friends finds himself in a great deal of trouble, these two sleuths just might have what it takes to save the day before the lasthorse crosses the finish line. What happens? You’ll have to read “Death atthe Races” to find out. I hope you enjoy it, as well as the otherdelightful mysteries in this fabulous collection. Happy reading.
