Two vehicles took up positions beside Tyler and Alexandra. Anotherrammed their car.
Alexandra’s window shattered. Bullets flew. Tyler ducked andsped past the vehicles. He spun the steering wheel until the Sedan faced theirthree pursuers. He shifted into reverse and drove. Freed his pistol. Fired at thevehicles.
The car on the right smashed into the concrete barrier. Theother two continued their course. Tyler swung the Sedan back around. Red andblue lights flashed ahead. Police. Not good. He didn’t slow. MY REVIEW:
A mixture of suspense, adventure, grief,making new connections, and hope for a happy future . . .
The author has done a fine job ofintroducing readers to the small mountain village of Maple Glen, Vermont. Thevillage is alongside the Appalachian Trail, and many of the action scenes takeplace on the rugged trail. The author's excellent descriptive writing made mefeel like I was right there in the frozen wilderness with the characters!
Devon Fairchild is visiting thecommunity to fulfill an important and very personal mission she promised herbrother, Dan, she would accomplish for them. She knows no one in town, and sheis not used to the weather or the challenging terrain. When she ventures off onher own on the trail, she finds herself injured and unable to walk.
When firefighter Finn McAllister rescuesDevon he is drawn into her life as her self-appointed protector. Devon is welcomedinto the McAllister Family's home when she needs a place to recuperate from herinjuries. Because of her past, this family's warmth, generosity, compassion,and acceptance mean the world to Devon. I found this aspect of the story to bevery touching and inspirational.

How many feed stores could there be inHeavenbrooke County? This was the Four Corners, as the vet tech described whenhe’d told him about the girl with the red 1976 Ford pickup truck. He took adeep breath and slowly shut the door behind him.
And then he saw her. His heart did the samestrange thing as earlier today when he spotted her parked on the shoulder.Thankfully, he listened to that quiet voice, somewhere deep in his soul,telling him to pull over and see if she needed help. He was sure she also feltthe spark between them when their eyes first met. JUNE: Please share some 'Behind-the-Scenes' Facts about your book.
HELENA:
1.) I learned about the world of horses from my friend Sarah, who worked at our local feed store. She is a wealth of knowledge and super patient, answering all my questions.
2.) My love of dogs inspired Milkbone’s character. We live with three Vizslas, so I have plenty of material on which to base my character.
3.) Lili and Milo are based on our real feline friends as well. Cats are such a wonderful part of our lives. My grandma had cats, and they were my patient friends who even allowed me to dress them up as dolls and put them in my toy stroller. Currently, we have four of these beauties living on our farm. They must think they are dogs, too, because when we take our Vizslas for a walk in the forest, they come along, too. I no longer dress them up, but I am always ready for a snuggle and a purr session.
4.) Kim, who works at my chiropractor’s office, is a horse lover. Just ask her a question, and her eyes light up. She was my first reader because I truly don’t know much about the world of horses. So gracious and kind, she patiently marked up my manuscript with horse-related terminology, facts, and suggestions. Thank you, Kim, for you have made a huge difference.
5.) I really like Jason Alba. He is such a great character, and his heart is full of love and kindness. I think the readers will love him too.
6.) And yes, the feed store is almost a character, too. Small rural communities depend on these country stores, which often supply not only feed for livestock but also tools and equipment. In my case, the feed store staff was a source of advice and encouragement–and delicious locally made ice cream.
It was there that I saw a beautifully crafted birdhouse for the first time. These works of art were created by an older Mennonite farmer who spent his winters building them. I love birds, so I just had to include these birdhouses in the story.

JUNE: Who is your favorite character in this story and 'why'?
HELENA: I love Stella Barkley because her struggles are so relatable. Every one of us occasionally wrestles with tough life choices and needs to make difficult decisions. And when we mean well, but our actions blow up in our faces, life becomes really hard. I hope that my readers will find hope and encouragement in Stella’s story. The truth is, even though life seems hopeless from time to time, it never is. As long as we are able to turn to our Father in Heaven and pray. So many people suffer from loneliness, which often leads to sadness and depression. Stella found a way back to her childhood faith, and even though she made mistakes along the way, the church community embraced her. The people in her small village accepted her and showed her the love of Jesus as she tried to rebuild her life and find true love. Her story gives me hope, and my prayer is that it would do the same for every reader who picks up Once Upon a Horse.

My unusual and lengthy journey to publication . . .
When I was small, my mom would read to me all the time. I loved a particular book so much that I would ask her to read it repeatedly. One night, exhausted, she handed me the book and asked me to read it. Much to her amazement, I did. I was four.
As a young child, my mom instilled a love of reading into her children. She ran a home babysitting business, and we traveled weekly to the library. We never left with less than a huge armful of books. She would read them to us, or we would read them, and then we would go back the following week and exchange them for a new stack.
I was a curious child, let’s be honest, nosy. One day, I stumbled upon a story my mother had written. I was amazed and enthralled. My mom, my mom had written a story? It was a romance, and one of the characters had amnesia. I will forever remember that moment.
If my mom could write a story, then I could, right? I began writing my own short stories. They usually didn’t get finished, and I would have several started, but I loved it. My favorite series was The Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin. I loved the various characters, each with different personalities and relatable.
As I grew older, I began reading romance novels. Starting with Barbara Cartland, then Harlequins. I soon moved on to the larger three-hundred-page historical romances. We kept B. Dalton in business, much to my dad’s chagrin and pocketbook. Then one day, my mom picked up a Sue Grafton novel in her alphabet series and the rest was history.
I took up mysteries and fell in love with them. Cozy mysteries were the best. My mom and I would share books and try to see if we could figure out the killer. Some of my favorite authors at the time were Janet Evanovich, Joanne Fluke, and Earlene Fowler.
When I began college, I decided to minor in English. I struggled and I ended up dropping it. Writing a book was still ate at me, but I lost confidence in my ability to pursue it. Several years later, I graduated and while I felt accomplished, there was something still missing.
In 2008, I decided that I wanted to throw caution to the wind and go forth with my dreams of becoming a published author. I researched writing groups and found a local one in my town, began attending meetings, and conferences to learn the craft. I realized that every time I came home, I was inspired. It gave me a spark of joy. One that I had been missing.
My love of cozy mysteries had not waned and when I was deciding on which genre to write in, I knew that was the one for me. My educational background is in Forensic Science, and based on my experiences, plus my obsession with True Crime, I thought it would be great material for my books.
I began writing my first story (which may never get published). I also joined a critique group to obtain feedback. It was a good experience. I learned a lot and met some amazing fellow authors in the field.
Then my mom grew ill and required a kidney transplant. Plus, my relationship was Amidst all the chaos, I stepped back from my writing. I was still writing, but my focus was on my mom and my family.
Luckily, my mom received the gift of life. My situation had changed, and writing was still there for me. Slowly, I got my mojo back, and I began writing more. In 2014, I started writing the first book in The Wedded Bliss Mystery series, which I recently published in August of 2024.
I remarried and became a stepmother and then mother to my son whom we adopted. I focused on the book and finished the completed first draft in 2018. It was sadly one month before I lost my mom. She saw me accomplish my goal of writing a book, and I am so grateful.
I continued working on the following stories in The Wedded Bliss Mystery series and by 2022 had finished five of the six books. I have an amazing critique/accountability group who has been very supportive, and I wouldn’t be where I am now without them.
My original goal was to publish the first book in 2023, but then I became very ill and spent most of the year battling health issues and running all over the place for a ton of doctor visits. So again, I had to place my publishing dreams on hold.
Why am I telling you all this? Because I want you to know that you should always follow your dreams. Even if it takes longer than you plan, it will be worth the journey. Never give up!

Christine Lawrence resides in a small town in Northwest Ohio with her husband, stepdaughter, son and four spoiled dogs. An avid reader since childhood, she decided to mesh her two favorite genres, romance and mystery. Working hard to complete the next book in The Wedded Bliss mystery series, she spends her free time participating in local writing groups, traveling and spending time with her family.
Christine has a bachelor’s degree in forensic science with a specialization in Crime Scene Investigation and a master’s degree in forensic psychology. Her background as a private investigator and obsession with all things crime related gives her endless fodder for her small-town cozy mysteries.

Aheartfelt story of renewed faith, falling in love, family bonds, anddiscovering pure joy . . .
A young widow and now single mother,Tori Stallings is trying to make the best of her recent move back to herhometown. She and her son, six-year-old Aiden, were welcomed with open arms byher late husband's family; and Aiden is thriving spending time with hisgrandmother and Uncle Micah.
Tori inherited her family home, andshe's been working on rehabbing the house before her job as a teacher begins ina few weeks. Unfortunately, she experiences another traumatic event when herhome burns to the ground in a fast-moving wildfire.
As one might expect, Tori's heartplunges into a very dark place, and her anger causes her to turn back on theLord—in a very public way. Although she paints on a brave face, she basicallywithdraws from everyone and everything. She quits going to church and resistsher friends who reach out to help her through this difficult time.
Micah Stallings, the younger brother ofTori's late husband, is a stand-up guy. He and Tori were best friends from thetime they were children until they were teens. When his older brother, Joel,swept Tori off her feet at age nineteen, Micah was devastated. “How’s Trixie?” Hope asked. Right after Halloween, Drew worked ona story for a local animal rescue group, and there he met a girl who stole hisheart. Her name was Trixie, and she was a four-month-old Jack Russell terrier.So, he thought it was a good idea to double down on the chaos of his life,which included renovating his new home, by adopting a puppy. Since she’d prettymuch done the same thing, she couldn’t judge her best friend.
“She’s in her absoluteterror phase. And those sharp little teeth are brutal. But when she’s asleep,she’s adorbs.”
Hope chuckled.She’d warned him, but he’d heard none of it. Though, she was confident he wouldsurvive Trixie’s puppyhood.
They stepped outof the church hall, their breath visible in the chilly winter air. She tucked astray lock of dark hair behind her ear, her gaze wandering across the parkinglot and stopping abruptly on a heated argument playing out just a few feetaway.
Ralph Lang’s facewas flushed with anger as he pointed a trembling finger at Mitty Fitzgerald.“You think you can get away with cheating me? Let me tell you, you’ve gotanother thing coming!”
Mitty Fitzgerald,his usual calm manner slightly rattled, replied, “Look, I didn’t cheat you. Youdon’t know what you’re talking about.”
Hope watched withfascination as her curiosity was piqued. What had driven these twomild-mannered men into such a heated confrontation? Then she remembered. She’dheard that Ralph believed that Mitty had sold him a fake antique six monthsearlier. A tall, lanky man with a perpetual smile and a reputation for beingthe town’s easiest-going and most honest handyman, Ralph hadn’t missed anopportunity to gripe about Mitty and the lamp he purchased.
“This isn’tgood,” Drew whispered to Hope. “We should break it up.”
Hope nodded, andtogether they stepped forward. But they were too late.
Before her eyes,Ralph’s frustration reached its boiling point, and he shoved Mitty hard enoughto send him stumbling back into the side of his pickup truck. The impact echoedthrough the quiet parking lot, and Hope gasped in shock, her heart pounding.
“Whoa!” Drew’seyes bugged out and, in a split second, he took off in a sprint. He put himselfbetween the two arguing men. “You both need to cool off.”
Meanwhile, Hopehurried to Mitty, who peeled himself away from the side of his truck andsignaled to Hope that he didn’t need any help.
Ralph’s chestheaved as he shot an accusing glance at Mitty. “This man is a swindler, Drew!He ripped me off, and I won’t stand for it. In fact, you should write anarticle in the Gazette about his shop and warn the public.”
Mitty, stillshaken from the shove, shook his head. “It’s not true. I have never sold fakeantiques. I have sold reproductions, but I’ve always made it clear what theywere.”
Ralph huffed infrustration, then turned and stormed away. Before disappearing, he cast onelast warning glance at Mitty. “You’ll regret this, Mitty!”
Hope couldn’thelp but be astonished. Ralph was the last person she’d expect to lose histemper like that, and Mitty’s calm response was a stark contrast to theaccusations. Something didn’t add up.

The holiday season is filled with cozy traditions that bring peopletogether, from the creative joy of wreath-making to the spirited fun ofcaroling. In my latest cozy mystery, A CORPSE AMONG THE CAROLERS, A FoodBlogger Mystery, these timeless activities aren’t just holiday tasks—they’recherished moments for characters to connect, swap stories, and share laughter.Wreath-making, for example, goes beyond crafting; it’s a time for friends togather, bond, and even trade a little gossip over ribbon and pinecones. Eachwreath becomes a keepsake of those shared moments, warming hearts as much as itbrightens doors.
Caroling, on the other hand, brings a different kind of magic. It’s ajoyful, slightly chaotic event where friends and neighbors come together,belting out Christmas classics with all their might (even if a bit off-key!).It’s a tradition that invites everyone to join in, reminding us that the seasonis about joy, not perfection. Though, in A CORPSE AMONG THE CAROLERS, the eventtakes a very unexpected and deadly turn.

Later that night at home, a festiveplaylist of Christmas tunes filled the air and a flickering fire cast a warmglow across the family room, creating the perfect ambiance for a delightfulwreath-making session. On Hope’s dining table, the remnants of a deliciousdinner were replaced with an array of evergreens, floral wire, sparklingornaments, and colorful spools of wide plaid ribbon, waiting to be assembledinto magnificent decorations.
From her regal perch on the cat treein the heart of the family room, Princess kept an eye on everyone. Not faraway, Bigelow, with his contented full belly, slumbered on his bed by thecrackling fire.
Molly and Becca were huddled at thetable, their hands busily working on a wreath for their mom while Hopemeticulously added the finishing touches to a special wreath for Drew.With all the remodeling chaos, she knew that holiday decorations would bescarce. And she was determined to bring some holiday magic to his doorstep. Shehad more than just a wreath up her sleeve. Her surprise delivery would includea fragrant loaf of cranberry-apple bread, a token of warmth and holiday spirit.
“Will Bigelow and Princess haveChristmas stockings?” Becca asked as she helped her sister cut a length ofribbon for the wreath.
Hope smiled as she answered, herhands deftly maneuvering the boughs into place.“Absolutely, Becca! Christmasjust wouldn’t be complete without stockings for every member of the family.”
