EXCERPTS:

PIP O’POSSUM:

“That’s a lot to think about.I guess it’s about time I grow up. Will I still have time for fun?”

“Sure! There’s time for both workand play. But if you don’t do the hard labor—and I mean to the very best ofyour ability—you won’t succeed in life. You might end up as one of my meals. Thatwould be unfortunate for you, wouldn’t it? Would you rather live—and livewell—or be my breakfast?”

Boon covered his eyes with hisgoggles and blinked.

SALLY SKUNKSKIN: (ending)

Over time, Sally made severalfriends:  a skunk named Samson, the entireO’Possum family, and the raccoon who didn’t trust her. The raccoon even apologizedfor being unfriendly. But Amos became her best friend.

He and Sally talked whenever shestopped by his dam for a drink, her beautiful tail held high.

Sally and her new friendshelped one another in good times and bad. Her grumbles were buried in her past.At last, Sally Skunkskin’s heart was grateful for everything:  her home, food to eat, and most of all, herclose friends.

BENJAMIN BAT:

I’ll show her some tricks shecan’t do.

“Watch this now,” he said ashe fluttered away. Benjamin zipped and zapped all over the ravine. He sailed overtrees and between narrow branches, giving a grand performance for theflycatcher.

Curious, Benjamin glanced towardJoJo for a split- second. His mistake cost him.

A barred owl was in hot pursuit!

Instantly realizing hiserror, Benjamin turned sharply to avoid capture, but one of the owl’s talons piercedhis wing! For a few seconds, Benjamin was helpless.

The owl carried him upward, buthis wing’s skin tore, freeing Benjamin.

Without full support from bothwings, he nose-dived, slapping flat against a large boulder in the gulch. Herolled down hill through broken rocks and tangled roots.

“Ow! Ow!” he cried with each bumpand bounce. The barred owl, whose sharp eyes never lost sight of Benjamin, dovedown to finish him off.

JoJo sprang into action.

Shocked and angry, shetackled the much larger bird, pecking at its back over and over until it moved onto find an easier meal. Worried for her new friend, she swooped down toBenjamin’s rescue. “Are you okay?”

NUTS:

Poppy’s stomach grumbled, so shescurried down her tree to dig up a nut—but another squirrel was already there. Withher paws on her hips, she stood up and said, “Wait a minute, Hickory. This is MYwalnut. Mine! I hid this one, along with many others. I’m sure of it.”

Hickory crossed his arms overhis chest. “No, Poppy. I buried this one.”

Neither hoarder would give thenut to the other. They were far too hungry to share but not too hungry toargue. For several minutes, they ignored the exposed treasure.

Andy, another gray squirrel, sneaked between them, snatched the prize for himself, and scrambled up to hisnest.

Andy’s movements were so quickthat neither Poppy nor Hickory saw him grab it. Poppy only noticed it was missingwhen she bent down to grab it herself.

“Now see what you’ve done?” Poppysaid. “It’s gone.”

“Well, I didn’t take it,” saidHickory, still not unfolding his arms.

The two of them searched the groundbut couldn’t find the nut. At least not until Poppy heard “nibble, nibble”coming from above.

She pointed up to the branches.“I think Andy’s got it.”

Hickory’s mouth fell open. “Well,I’ll be...”

🌳🦇🦨🐿️🪹📚🌲🌳🦇🦨🐿️🪹📚🌲

JEREMY JAY:

“Hmm.”

Jeremy picked up his claw andstared at it. His talons lay flat and twisted.

“Hard to imagine how this couldever be useful, though. It’s not like it makes my other leg better. Wouldn’t thatbe nice?”

Boon puffed out his chest. Hedidn’t like animals putting themselves down. There was no feeling bad for yourselfon his watch.“

No one’s perfect. No one,nowhere.

“I’ve always strived for perfection, even with this.”

Jeremy turned his head to theside. Isn’t perfection the goal?

“Do the best you can with whatyou have, bub. That’s it. When you do, you’ve won. But it takes practice andhard work.”

Jeremy held his foot out forBoon to study. If they were going to talk about it, then this huge bird should seeit all, so that he could know it all. “How can this ever be useful?”

“Open your mind, boy. Startimaginin’ it as a tool for nest-buildin’. Start thinkin’ of how you can use it.You might surprise yourself by what you can do.”

“Thanks, Boon.”

“You’re welcome. Just remember,nobody’s perfect.”

About the Author[image error]

Of the many jobs I’ve held in the past, including thirty-five years of designing and constructing stained glass windows part-time, teaching was one of the most enjoyable for me because investing in kids is so important. To this end, I continue to encourage good character with clean, moral stories kids and teens love to read. Good books make such an impact.

Writing is hard work, but there’s nothing like a good story to run off with your imagination. When things are flowing, it’s like a vacation. Sometimes the best ideas come in the middle of the night.

When not writing, you’ll find me painting with watercolor, doing school visits, writing a blog, interviewing other writers, designing websites, working as an administrative assistant part-time, and renovating houses.

Is this retirement? Apparently so! I’m loving every minute of it with my husband of 43 years.

About the Book

Title:   The Dutch Muse
Series:
   A Fabiola Bennett Mystery #4
Author:
   Heidi Eljarbo
Publisher:
   Independently Published
Release Date:
   June 17, 2025
Genre:
Clean Historical Dual-Timeline Mystery with a touch of romance

A ruthless thief leaves a private Dutch gallery with a coveted seventeenth-century painting. The owner lies unconscious on the floor. Art historian Fabiola Bennett is on vacation in Holland and takes on the case.

Amsterdam, 1973.It’s late summer, and Fabiola and Pippa join their friend, Cary, for a few days of sightseeing, museums, and riding bikes around the beautiful city.

For the first time in her life, Fabiola feels a pang of jealousy, and rude comments from a gallerist make her doubt her own abilities.

Then, unexpectedly, Cary’s Dutch client, Lennard van de Hoek, is brutally struck down and a baroque portrait by Ferdinand Bol is stolen. Fabiola pushes aside her problems and jumps into danger without hesitation. The list of suspects is long, and with a cold-blooded criminal at large, they must constantly be on the alert.

Amsterdam, 1641

Ferdinand Bol has completed his five-year training with Master Rembrandt van Rijn and is ready to set up his own studio. The future looks bright, and Ferdinand sets a goal to become a widely sought-after and, hopefully, prosperous master portraitist.

Just when Ferdinand’s career starts to flourish—and patrons and customers discover his exceptional talent—one of his models confesses she’s in deep trouble, and he drops everything to help her.

This is a fast-paced and captivating who-done-it set in the Netherlands—the fourth installment and a spin-off from the Soli Hansen Mysteries. Perfect for fans of Kathleen McGurl, Louise Penny, Deborah Swift, Anna Lee Huber, Lucinda Riley, Sherry Thomas, Ellery Adams, and Jennifer S. Alderson.

EXCERPT 1:

Amsterdam,1973

“The beam above thedoorway looks like it’s been painted to resemble marble. Why would rich peoplewant fake stuff?”  Pippa asked. “Surely, both Rembrandt and the owner of this place could both afford the real deal.”

“They probably could, but marbling was very popular during the seventeenth century. We can still see alot of it in old palaces and churches. The painting technique was applied tochimney pieces, staircases, columns, and many other things.” Fabiola tapped herlip. “I bet that doorway goes to the anteroom. At least, that’s the way it isin Rembrandt’s house.”

Pippa narrowed hereyes. “An anteroom?”

“Rembrandt conductedhis art dealing business in a room like that. He received customers anddiscussed commission for paintings—all over a glass of wine.” Fabiola turned tothe back wall and sighed. “And look at that door with the rounded archway. I’m tellingyou, they’ve designed everything to take after the old master painter’s home.”

Pippa nudged Cary.“She’s going into a history trance. We’ve been here all but five minutes, andI’ve already learned everything I need to know about baroque interior and artdealing. Hurry, we need to rescue her.”

Fabiola laughed. “Stopit. I’m just in awe that someone has gone to such lengths to make their home areplica of Rembrandt’s. It’s fascinating.”

EXCERPT 3:

Amsterdam,1641

“Now, when you leave, don’t be a stranger,” Rembrandt said. “You have been a most excellentassistant, and you will do well.”

“Any final piece ofadvice to send me on my way? I am both eager and perhaps bold in assuming I’llsee success in my future. At the same time, I am merely your humble student.”

Rembrandt laid his handon Ferdinand’s shoulder. “The training you received in Dordrecht before youcame here provided you with an excellent foundation, and I have taught youeverything you need to know to have great success as a painter. You have suckedup every lesson, mastered each skill, and been as pliable as a new branch inspring. My advice would be to never become an old branch, dry through andthrough; one that easily breaks because he cannot bear to be shaken. Be docileand teachable, always learn, continuously develop a better way to use yourpaint and brushstrokes to become worthy of the title master painter. That said, you are your own ruler now. Twenty-five years old and merely ten years youngerthan myself…we are much alike, you and I, Ferdinand. We both chose ourprofession at an early age—or rather, I would say a life of painting chose us.Go forth, now. Let Ferdinand Bol take charge of his own destiny.”

“Thank you, MasterRembrandt. I am highly indebted to you for your generosity.” He stood andplaced his flat-top hat on his head.

“What’s wrong?” He helped her up. “Do you need to sit?”

Sophie pulled away from him, her mouth dry and her head spinning out ofcontrol. She chanced another peek between cars to the sidewalk beyond, but nowa group of teens stood in a huddle where she had seen Troy.

They must confront their own failures and unravel the secrets hidden within themselves to rescue Bridgette … and survive a madman's twisted game. 🧩🔦🔎📖❤️🧩🔦🔎📖❤️🧩

EXCERPT:

Nick whirled, facing his boss approaching fromthe corner office. A rising moon observed them through bulletproof windows.Silver light slanted across empty desks and cubicle dividers. “I didn’t realizeyou were still here.”

Special Agent in Charge Luke Santiago drippedwith perspiration, his necktie unknotted, and his shirtsleeves rolled to hiselbows. He extracted a handkerchief from his pocket, dabbed his brow, mustache, and sideburns, then stashed it away.

“What’s with the sweat? It’s got to be twentydegrees outside, and the heat’s been off for hours.”

“Ambassador Van Sloan received another threat.”

“That makes three, right?”

Santiago nodded. “He’s requested you for aspecial assignment. Security detail.”

Nick swallowed. “Protect the ambassador? I’m arisk analyst, not a field agent.”

“He’s aware. He wants you because of yourability to quickly analyze a situation and make sound judgments. Besides, youwon’t be providing security for Van Sloan.”

“Not the ambassador?” Nick’s brow furrowed.“Then who?”

“His daughter, Bridgette.”

Nick coughed and ran his finger between hiscollar and neck. “I’m not sure I’m comfortable handling her on my own.”

“You won’t be. FBI is transferring someone.”

“Who?”

“Special Agent Powers.”

Nick raised an eyebrow. “Agent Powers? As in Arizona Powers, the one who flipped outafter that Mitchell kid was murdered?”

“You’ve got the gist. She’ll be here firstthing Monday morning.”

Nick had never met Powers in person, but he’dread enough news articles and heard enough scuttlebutt to know that workingwith her would not be without its challenges. According to the media, the womanhad a personal vendetta against kidnappers, and her nervous breakdown andsubsequent stint in therapy had been widely publicized.

“Is she stable enough to return to work?”

“Director Carlton assured me Powers is fitenough for this task. Take it easy on her, Trueheart. If it weren’t for thisassignment, she’d be collecting unemployment. I’ll see you Monday.” Santiagoturned to leave.

EXCERPT:

Hugo opened a sleepy eye. At first, he thought he was at home, butwhat he was lying on was much too hard to be his bed, and the light was muchtoo bright to be his room. He looked up and saw nothing but blue sky. Strange. He slowly stirred to life. Where am I? He looked around, and theshock of what he saw jolted him out of his dreamy state. He hopped to his feet.

He was on the side of a ridge. He looked in every direction, butthe view was the same as far as he could see. The terrain was hilly and aridwith rocks, gnarled trees, and measly shrubs sprinkled around. The area was covered with green grass which had turned brown in spots, creatingthe semblance of a two-colored carpet.

The sun was shining brightly without a cloud in the sky. Theweirdest thing of all wasn't the landscape—it was his clothes. Gone were hisjeans and T-shirt. Instead, he wore a beige knee-length wool tunic with aleather belt around his waist and leather sandals. He felt a chill when herecognized them from his dreams. Over everything was a woolen cloak, whichreminded him of a poncho. The roughand uncomfortable cloth itched his body allover.

I’m back in mynightmare, but it’s even more real.

Especially when Gus’s antics bring her under the suspicious gaze of the gorgeous single dad next door. Staying on the move has kept her heart safe for twelve years. But veterinarian Ethan Price and his adorable daughter make Nicole wonder if staying in Golden might be worth the risk. EXCERPT:

With a chuckle, Ethan placed his phone on thecounter and returned to the glasses in the sink, then out of the corner of hiseye he noticed a streak go by. From his view, he saw Gus galloping toward theswing set, his leash dragging in the grass behind him. Then Nicole came intoview, chasing after her wayward dog, who had a significant lead.

He couldn’t tear his gaze from her, dressed in afloral sundress, the jaunty elf hat half-hanging off her head. Her outfitelicited a laugh. Nicole’s antics made his heart light, and he couldn’t recallwhen he’d been so charmed. A welcome reprieve after the stress that had usheredin the end of his marriage.

Finally, she stopped chasing the energetic dog.Placing her hands on her hips, she stared him down. Gus came back to sit infront of her, meeting her gaze without flinching. He wondered how long thestandoff would last. When they didn’t move, he dried his hands again, then walkedout the back door and onto the wooden porch, stopping at the railing to resthis palms on the rough, flat surface.

Neither of his new neighbors twitched.

He decided action was needed and let out a lowwhistle. Gus jerked and then bounded over to him, rushing up the steps for abrisk rubdown.

MY REVIEW:

One clever 5-year-old girl plus onemischievous golden retriever equals lots of whimsy and fun in this enjoyablecontemporary romance . . .

Nicole Connelly has moved back to Goldentemporarily while she is completing a project for her employer, SandersEntertainment. She loves her job, but she is hesitant about living back inGolden for a month after leaving her hometown and family several years ago.

Her recently-adopted golden retriever, Gus,is a bundle of affectionate fluff that is an expert escape-artist. He makesfriends easily, but he needs some training to break his bad habits and become awell-behaved canine.

Dr. Ethan Price, the town's veterinarianwho lives in the house next door to Nicole's rental, is intense and serious. His irritation when he finds his five-year-old daughter, Holly, playing withGus out in their front yard comes across loud and clear in his initial meetingwith Nicole.

The core wound for both of the adults isa lack of trust in others because of major traumas they survived in the past. Both Ethan and Nicole are hesitant to open up and share their past experienceswith the other. Holly's warm and welcoming spirit toward Nicole and Gus providesthe perfect catalyst to jumpstart Ethan's acceptance of Nicole.

Things don’t always go smoothly asNicole attempts to heal her relationships with her Mother, two sisters, and one half-sister, but the kind community of Golden helps out by giving support andencouragement whenever needed.

I enjoyed reading about Nicole's job andthe creative ideas she came up with for the town's seasonal promotions toincrease tourism in the area. As an animal lover, I enjoyed Dr. Price's careand kindness toward animals and their owners. Holly has a joyful spirit whichis hard to ignore. Last but not least, Gus was a valuable addition to the plotin many ways.

This book is completely clean inlanguage and content. I received a copy of this book from the author throughJustRead Publicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solelymy own.

When the campground becomes the scene of the crime, will Noelle's peaceful summer go up in flames?

Down on her luck event planner Noelle Cooper is returning to rural Maine to do the one thing she swore she would never do: run her family’s campground. But it’s only for the summer, and the timing couldn’t be better–she’s lost her job and has nowhere to live. She hopes that a change of scenery will be the thing she needs to regroup and reinvent herself.

But Noelle’s plans go up in smoke on her first morning back when she stumbles upon the body of her high school rival. She barely has time to process this before she comes face-to-face with her ex-boyfriend, meets the handsome county sheriff, and is questioned by an intimidating state trooper who gives her the creeps.

While she’s busy dealing with a group of pushy campers who insist that the murder means she must cancel the annual bonfire, Noelle becomes the prime suspect in the murder investigation. She’s convinced that someone is feeding false information to the police and is determined to clear her name.

With the help of her podcast-obsessed cousin, her anxious rescue beagle, and a few eccentric campers, Noelle compiles a list of other suspects and pokes around to uncover the real killer.

Can Noelle prove her innocence before getting tossed in jail? Or is she playing with fire? Read Campfires & Corpses now to find out.

*** This clean, contemporary cozy mystery is set in a small town with quirky characters and lovable dogs. Cozy mystery fans will enjoy dissecting the suspects’ alibis and following the clues along with Noelle and her gang. ***

Here's what you'll LOVE about this series!

These are just a few of the reasons you'll love Campfires & Corpses:

The story is set in Maine During a summer heatwave There's a rescue beagle (and other great dog-themed references) It all takes place in a campground that's in a tiny town There's a fast-paced, page-turning ending🐕⛺ 🥾🏞️🎣🐕⛺ 🥾🏞️🎣🐕 ~AUTHOR GUEST POST~ 'Creating Corny the Beagle'
“Is the character of Corny based on a real dog?”

This is a question that I get asked a lot. Maybe that’s true of all writers who feature pets in their stories, but I also read a lot of this in online comments and book reviews:

“I fell in love with Noelle’s rescue beagle, Corny.”

“The dog on the cover is so cute!”

“Corny, Noelle's rescue beagle, is probably my favorite.”

That last comment (pulled straight from an Amazon review of my new book, Campfires & Corpses) comes as no surprise to me. The book has been out in the world for a couple of months now, and Corny is—hands down—a reader favorite.

To say that this makes me smile is an understatement. Creating Corny the beagle was one of the best parts of writing Campfires & Corpses. As a life-long lover of dogs, I am tickled pink to learn that readers connect with this fictional pup.

And he is mostly fictional. Corny is not based on any one dog; he’s a combination of dogs.

I did have a beagle-mix growing up. His name was Max, and he went camping with us every summer. I have many fond memories of him sniffing every campsite on our walks and basking in the hot July sun.

Max made me partial to beagles, and over the years, I have become a fan and supporter of an organization called Beagle Freedom Project. BFP is a California-based non-profit that rescues and rehabilitates animals (mostly beagles) that come from research testing facilities.

Beagle Freedom Project advocates for the release of the animals and also for legislation to end animal testing and the practices that come with animal testing. One of those practices is to euthanize the animals once the researchers feel that the animal has outlived its testing usefulness. BFP has proven that these animals can live full, happy lives after the laboratory, and works to save them from being euthanized.

So, when I decided to start writing my Maine Campground Cozy Mystery series, I knew that I wanted to include a beagle, and I really wanted to shed lighton animals who are research survivors. It’s a fine line to walk—cozies are supposed to be feel-good books—but it was really important to me to at least try.

Corny—like a lot of beagles who are born and bred in a research facility—is a pure-bred beagle who lived in an indoor cage twenty-four hours per day. He’s like a puppy in some ways, even though he’s three years old. He didn’t grow up playing with toys or getting loving pets. He also didn’t encounter many people or other dogs.

For these reasons, Corny is timid and has some anxiety. In Campfires & Corpses, you find Corny hiding in corners and being choosey about the people he approaches. By the end of the book, he has started to come out of his shell, but still has a long road ahead of him.

That long road is by design. I wanted to stay true to the slow, real-life experiences of animals who come from such traumatic backgrounds. I have watched dozens of videos online that show research beagles taking months to learn how to simply play or roll in the grass. Some can never walk down a sidewalk in public due to their high anxiety.

I think it’s this vulnerability that my readers especially love. And it came easily to me when writing Corny into scenes. I could imagine how Corny would react when someone started shouting or banging on a door.

But don’t get me wrong:  Corny is also learning to enjoy the finer points of beagle life—mostly sleep and food. He groans and sighs with displeasure when his sleep is interrupted, and he learns quickly that humans drop crumbs (all beagles—even those from a laboratory—have a propensity towards food). These are very typical beagle behaviors that I wanted him to have.

Corny will continue to be a major side character in the rest of the Maine Campground Cozy Mystery series. He gets a lot of time on the pages in the next book, Whoopie Pies & Alibis. And just as his owner, Noelle, will grow and develop throughout the series, so will Corny.
If you’re interested in learning more about Corny and Noelle—how they met, and where the name Corny (short for Cornflake) comes from—I recommend reading my short story called Freedom & Fosters: A Beagle Rescue Short Story.

Northern Virginia’s own Martha Stewart returns in a brand-new mystery as an interior designer clashes with a killer . . .

Stylish brunches are all the rage this autumn in Old Town Alexandria, and everyone’s posting their parties on social media. But while Domestic Diva Sophie Winston juggles her event-filled calendar, she’s approached by local designer Mitzi Lawson—who is afraid someone is following her. The very next day Mitzi loses her best friend and business partner, Denise. The two were renovating a generations-old house where Denise died unexpectedly, and Mitzi fears that it wasn’t a medical condition to blame, but murder.

It could just be the shock talking, but Sophie agrees to help Mitzi involve the police. Then she receives a panicked phone call from Mitzi, and when she rushes to the old house, Mitzi is nowhere to be found. Now Sophie’s appetite for investigation is piqued even more than her appetite for eggs Benedict and mimosas.

Could Denise’s death be connected to her viper’s nest of in-laws or the house she was working on which her husband just inherited? What of the self-proclaimed etiquette expert with some improper secrets, or the scheming mistress? Or does the old house harbor secrets of its own? There’s a generous buffet of suspects to keep the Diva scrambling for an answer . . .

Includes delicious recipes and fabulous DIY decorating tips!

MY REVIEW:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Awell-written story featuring a strong cast of two-legged and four-legged characterswho deftly navigate readers through this intricate murder mystery . . .

This is the second book I have read inthe author's Domestic Diva Mystery series, and I sincerely admire the author'sability to fluently manage a large number of characters and clues in her stories whilekeeping readers engaged and entertained. The 'Cast of Characters' included inthe front of the book makes a great reference for readers.

Sophie Winston, the Domestic Diva, writes an advice column about all things domestic—decorating, entertaining, andcooking. The columns presented at the beginning of each chapter are whimsicaland sometimes funny. If Sophie is not the columnist, advice with a differenttone from 'Natasha' (who is a frenemy of Sophie) is shared with readers.

This story grabbed my attention rightaway with the mysterious and tragic death of a beloved member of the communityinterior designer, Denise Nofsinger. Denise is a young woman who is happily marriedto a member of one of the town's prominent families.

Sophie and her closest friends—Nina,Mars, and Bernie—work through clues diligently to piece together who is killingmembers of their small community until they successfully come up with themotive and ultimately the identity of the killer.

As a bonus, the author has included awide variety of recipes for dishes included in the story for readers to enjoy. This story is completely clean in language and content.

I received a copy of this book from the authorthrough Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours. All of my thoughts and opinionsshared here are solely my own.
