This Christian/clean & wholesome romance is set in New Orleans and was inspired by a true story.
Toward the end of his life, I asked my 'Uncle Allen' how he met his wife. He shared about how he met 'Irene' at a church social in their neighborhood in New Orleans in the early 1940s. He had been seriously wounded in Guadalcanal in the South Pacific as a young Marine and was using crutches to get around as best he could. He had many inner wounds which needed time to heal, too.
He had no way of knowing when they first met that Irene had suffered her own wartime tragedy. She bravely sought to keep her grief locked away deep inside because thinking about her loss caused her even more sorrow. She needed to be strong because she was the breadwinner for her small family.
Times were tough, but these two unique individuals made it through each day with faith, fortitude, determination, and the sincere hope of something greater just over the horizon. This inspirational short story follows the growth of Allen and Irene's relationship beginning with their chance meeting and leading forward to a lifetime spent together. 'Handmade Hearts' was created to honor this unique couple's love for and devotion to each other in a relationship which spanned seven decades.

New Orleans, Louisiana
October 20, 1944
Allen wrestled with his heavy wooden crutches. Each step was agonizing. He grimaced as he labored up the stairs of the church's fellowship hall proudly wearing his uniform—a uniform he’d dreamed of wearing since learning of the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
In addition to the almost intolerable and constant pain, the three bullet wounds received from a sniper in Guadalcanal two months ago had wreaked havoc with his plans for his life. Well, at least I still have a life . . .
Dozens of his fellow Marines had not made it out of Guadalcanal alive on that horrendous, life-altering night. Allen felt himself slipping into the abyss of traumatic memories once again. The vivid memories that plagued him daily flashed in front of his eyes. His pulse quickened, and his heart pounded loudly in his ears. He felt clammy and nauseous, and both legs began to tremble.
A woman's melodic voice roused him from his memories of the ambush.
"Good evening, Lance Corporal. May I hold the door for you?"
Allen wondered how long she had been speaking to him before her voice drifted through to his subconscious. He blinked as the details of her face came into focus.
"Uh, what? Yes, I guess you'd better," Allen snapped.
When he recognized the hurt expression on her face, he turned toward her.
"Sorry if I sounded gruff. I just feel so helpless being dependent on these blasted crutches!"
"No need to apologize or explain," she answered in a soothing voice. "Let me introduce myself. I'm Irene Carston."

Looking outside, she couldn’t help but think of her ehmann. The first stirrings of spring used to be Josiah’s favorite time of the year. He’d worked hard to landscape the acreage surrounding the home he’d built with his own hands. The whitewashed house nestled amid lovingly planted gardens, where a variety of plants grew in lush abundance. After a long, frosty winter, the eager buds were beginning to raise their sleepy heads. Soon, they would burst into an array of colorful blossoms.
Spring was a renewal, a resurrection. Not only of the spirit but also of hope. Just as the Heavenly Father promised.
But this year Josiah wouldn’t celebrate the coming of the new season. His eyes were forever closed, and his soul rested in the hands of the Lord. The accident that had almost taken his young nephew’s life had taken Josiah’s instead. Though the youngie was warned to stay away from the frozen pond, Eli had wandered onto the ice. Weak and not yet frozen solid, the fragile surface had given way, plunging the kinderinto freezing water. Chopping wood nearby, Josiah heard Eli’s cries and rushed to help. He’d gotten the boiout safely, but not before taking on a chill. Rushed to the hospital, he’d died a few hours later of respiratory system failure brought on by hypothermia. His death was sudden and unexpected.
Vision blurring, she pressed a hand to her mouth to stifle a sob. Josiah had passed last November, just before the holidays. Healthy and in the prime of life, he should have had a bright future.
But Gott had other plans.
“Lavinia?” Her bruder’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Did you hear a word I’ve said?”
Swiping at her eyes, Lavinia turned away from the window. “Forgive me. My mind wandered. Give me a minute and I’ll have some tea ready.”
Peering over the rim of his glasses, Abram Mueller offered a smile. “Take your time. I’m still going over the paperwork that will close the mortgage and get everything out of Josiah’s name.”
“I’m sorry you’re having to help me.” Flipping on the tap, Lavinia filled a kettle with water before setting it on the stove. After adding loose tea leaves to a metal ball, she dropped it inside to steep. Stomach going tight, her hands shook. “I’m still shocked to find out he mortgaged our home without my knowledge.”
Setting out her best china, she filled two delicate cups with the tarry brew. The scent of bergamot tickled her nostrils as steam rose. A hot cup of Earl Grey would be just the thing to set her right. Having added a pitcher of fresh cream and a bowl of sugar to a tray, she carried everything to the table.
Expression serious, Abram scribbled a few figures. “The property should have been in both of your names. Then he couldn’t have gambled away the roof over your head.”
Lavinia sat, smoothing her hands across her lap. “I wish it was all a bad dream.” After his death, she’d discovered Josiah had kept a lot of secrets. Her perfect ehmann was a deeply flawed man.
Abram shook his head. “There would have come a point when he had to tell you he couldn’t make the payments anymore.”
She blinked. Barely five months had gone by since Josiah died. In that brief time, her life had fallen completely apart.

About the Author
Pamela Desmond Wright grew up in a small, dusty Texas town. Like the Amish, Pamela is a fan of the simple life. Her childhood includes memories of the olden days; old-fashioned oil lamps, cooking over an authentic wood-burning stove and making popcorn over a crackling fire at her grandparents' cabin. The cabin was later donated to The Muleshoe Heritage Center in Muleshoe Texas where it can be viewed by the public.

EXCERPT FROM 'CHRISTMAS IN BONITA CREEK':
Estelle was so preoccupied with thoughts of ideas for their project that she nearly forgot to stop by the mailbox on her way up the driveway. She parked her bike and held her breath as she opened the mailbox flap. She swept her hand through the opening until she finally touched gold—a thick envelope that was stuffed into the dark corner of the back of the box.
She closed her eyes and prayed it was from Sam or John. "Sam or John, Sam or John. Please let it be from my brother or my fiancé," she spoke quietly. When she was holding the envelope in front of her she opened her eyes. "It's from Sam. Yay!"
Her joy quickly faded as she noticed the handwriting on the envelope was not the familiar slanted lettering of her brother's left-handed scrawl. She knew sometimes when soldiers were critically wounded or killed in combat that someone else would mail their personal effects home, including letters the soldier may have dictated for loved ones to receive upon their death.
Her wariness grew when she noticed the envelope was addressed to 'Miss Estelle Vincent.' Usually when Sam wrote to the family he addressed it to 'The Vincent Family' or 'The George Vincent Family.' Estelle hoped there wasn't bad news inside that she would be expected to share with her parents. To avoid any unnecessary drama this evening, she would wait to open the letter until she was alone.
Estelle tucked the envelope into her dress pocket and parked her bike in the garage before walking into the kitchen for a snack. She headed down the hall to her mother's sewing room to greet her and find out how she was doing.
"Hello, Mother."
Her mother looked up from her sewing with a puzzled look on her face. "Estelle, why are you home so early? Are you feeling ill?"
"I worked my shift until 4:30, and then met with Gloria at the library for over half an hour. It's close to 5:30 now."
Rosalie Vincent gasped. "I must have lost track of time working on these pleats for the new skirt I'm making for you. I guess I got lost in my thoughts and prayers about Sam and John."

For Mary, it starts when she meets Jayson Raber, a handsome and charming carpenter.
I have enjoyed reading Amish fiction for more than a dozen years. I enjoy learning about their customs and traditions, their view of the outside world, and their strongly-defined faith. This book offers readers a peek inside of all of these aspects of this faith community.
The story takes on many twists and turns as the author peels back the layers of scar tissue and barriers the characters have erected around their hearts because of past hurts and traumas. We learn in the course of this story that even those belonging to this close-knit community can hurt each other deeply with their thoughtless words and deeds.
My favorite types of stories are those where individuals make great personal progress in their faith and in how they live their lives and treat others. This book offers several examples, through the thoughts and deeds of realistic characters, of how people who want to change and improve can and do change and improve.
This touching story is filled with forgiveness, healing, and love . . . Highly recommend for fans of Amish romance, Christian romance, and clean & wholesome romance.
