Ben couldn’t help himself. He’d been gone for weeks and missed Marianna like crazy. He stood on the dirt road outside her family’s house. It was a new moon, which wasn’t visible in the night sky. Instead, the stars sparkled like fistfuls of diamonds tossed on a black velvet fabric.
Shifting from side to side and kicking up dirt and gravel from the road, Ben contemplated if he should sneak to her window just to see her beautiful face, even for ten minutes. The house looked quiet, and he guessed that the rest of her family had already fallen asleep. But didn’t she say she often stayed up to read or write in her journal? Seeing the joy on her face was worth the risk when she realized he’d come home a day early.
He slowly walked toward the house by the light from his cell phone, realizing for the first time how loud walking on pine cones could be. Ben strained to see if there was any sign of lantern or candlelight—evidence that she was awake. Hopefully, Trapper wouldn’t hear him and bark, waking everyone up.
Step by step, he made his way to the side of the house toward her downstairs bedroom window. He felt like a teenager again, parking his truck down the road to sneak into his girlfriend’s house. Yet this wasn’t just a girlfriend. This was his fiancée, soon to be his wife. His smile widened even as he hunched down under the window. He was about to reach his hand to tap on the window, but his cell phone chimed its familiar tune. Ben jumped and stood erect. He’d forgotten to put his phone on silent, and at the moment, the chiming sounded as loud as a shotgun going off in the night.
Ben quickly shut off the ringing and stood as still as possible.
“Marianna.” His voice was just louder than a whisper, but even through the closed curtains he could see no light was on. She must be fast asleep. Trapper too. He tapped the window as softly as he could. No response.
He considered tapping louder, but Ben knew that would wake Trapper. He’d just have to content himself with seeing Marianna’s beautiful face tonight in his dreams instead of in person.

She’d noticed the men with Rocky on occasion. Perhaps they served as his guards or his servants. Either way, she wouldn’t let them intimidate her.
“Young lady,” Rocky said, “I’ll need you to testify to the police and the judge on my behalf, let them know Stretch came after me and that I was left with no choice but to shoot him or lose my life.”
Had Stretch provoked him? She glanced at Stretch’s crumpled body. There wasn’t a weapon in sight. Blood poured out of the open wound in his bare chest, forming a dark puddle on the floor. “I’m sorry, Mr. Kenna, but I can’t testify to that end—”
“Sure you can. You were right here.” He straightened his suit coat as though his business was finished. “You saw everything just the way I said.”
He wanted her to lie for him? So he could get away with murder? Well, if he didn’t already know, he was about to learn that she was a woman with as much integrity as her father. “No, actually, I didn’t see Stretch do anything to harm you.”

Stopped in front of a door, her heart thumping hard.

“Who are you?” She raised the taser.
She had the sense of a tiger, his eyes darkening, crouching, ready to pounce.
“Who are you?” he said, his voice quiet.

“Who does it belong to?” He lifted it, and it dangled from his fingers.

MY REVIEW:🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟An action-packed, faith-filled, memorable romantic suspense novel . . .
This is the second novel I've read by this gifted author. She has a talent for drawing her readers into the action from the first sentence and keeping them engaged until the last page of the book.
This story includes well-developed main characters, including an extraordinary K-9 named Hercules, and features excellent descriptive writing about the settings in the story. I was so involved in the story at one point that I realized I was shivering from the cold when in reality my home was cozy and warm!
There is a small group of supporting characters with very bad attitudes in this story. Their angst and sarcasm filled the scene when they were on page which helped to balance the personalities of the otherwise amiable main characters.
The lead female character, Jayla Hoyt, carried a deep burden of guilt over some events from her past. However, Hercules was sensitive to her feelings and moods and provided a lot of comfort to his handler and others throughout the story. They worked together like a well-oiled machine, and the pair trusted each other implicitly.
The lead male character, Bryson Clarke, dealt with his own demons from his past and was frequently reminded of them by some individuals around him. He was trying to heal and move forward in his life; he was instrumental in helping Jayla through some really tough times.
My favorite character was Hercules. I thoroughly enjoy reading stories which include K-9 heroes because I love to learn more about how these animals assist their handlers in dangerous situations and in everyday life. Hercules offered some comic relief in the story with his natural 'doggy' behavior when he was off-duty. 'Herc' was a valuable addition to the cast.
The mystery that ran throughout the book was complex and well-planned by the author. She did not reveal anything about anyone until she was good and ready. That simple technique is what makes suspense, thriller, and mystery readers come back for more!
This book is completely clean in language and content.

He opened his mouth to disagree, but that day played in his mind. Confusion, worry and fear had topped his emotions. Then love had covered them all.

A blend of strong characters and an intricate plot add up to a good read . . .
Search and rescue air-scent dog handler, Charlotte Bradley, and her amazing canine, Theo, are desperately searching for a missing teen. The young woman has vanished from the home for pregnant teens where Charlotte, a marriage and family therapist, counsels the residents. During their search, the partners discover a gruesome crime scene.
Sheriff Dennis Monroe takes charge of the case involving the missing teen and works closely with Charlotte to get to the bottom of why someone is tracking down the young women. To make matters worse, someone is after Charlotte. There are several bold attempts to scare her away from working on the case.
Readers are treated to a complex plot which takes them on a twisting, turning path with lots of ups and downs and several possible villains and villainesses. No one can be trusted.
The emotional aspects of the case leave the lead characters and the law enforcement team members stressed, drained, exhausted, and frustrated. With courage and good old-fashioned teamwork, they diligently dissect the crimes piece by piece until they figure out what is happening and why. The clock is running, and they need to solve the case before another tragedy occurs.
This book is completely clean in language and content. The faith thread is subtle, but it is present throughout the story.

I am a big fan of this author's previous two series, so I was looking forward to reading this novel which is the kick-off of her new 'Missing in Alaska' series. I have read dozens of Christian romantic suspense books in the past few years, and I found this story to be unique in several ways. While the story contains a lot of action, the main focuses are on relationships and on solving an intricate set of mysteries which involve many of the main characters. A tight-knit team of professionals works together to get to the bottom of what is happening in the small town of Shadow Gap, Alaska.
The lead female character, Police Chief Autumn Long, is a skilled police officer whom I came to admire greatly as the story progressed. She has a sixth sense about her that makes her a tenacious investigator and a formidable opponent to anyone who crosses her in her professional and personal lives. She is driven to accomplish her goals no matter what obstacles she encounters.
The lead male character, Grier Brenner, is a mysterious newcomer to the town. He becomes somewhat of a local hero after he saves a drowning woman. He is secretive about his background, but he is loyal to his cause of helping others in need. He is a courageous, compassionate man. He is a protector at heart, and I feel that his presence and contributions to the story were my favorite part of the plot.
In addition to well-developed characters, readers are treated to the author's skill at building a believable and credible setting in rugged Alaska. Weather events and geographic locations play an important role in this plot, and I never knew what to expect next as I read the story!
Autumn's relationships with her brother and grandparents are close and affectionate. They support and encourage each other in times of need. They also work together to resolve problems. The faith thread was woven into the story from start to finish. The scriptures featured throughout the story were meaningful to the characters and to me as a reader. The author's attention to detail and the emotion she wrote into her characters' words and deeds make this a satisfying read for fans of Christian/clean romance and Christian/clean romantic suspense. The book is completely clean in language and content.
