~ VINTAGE VALENTINES & GIFTS 2024 ~

I've always lovedValentine's Day. When I was a teacher it was my favorite day of the school yearbecause it was a pleasure to watch the students think of others by giving outValentines, candies, and other treats to their classmates—and to their fortunate teacher.
One of the math activities weparticipated in during February when I taught first grade was a graphingactivity suggested by the 'Math Their Way' program. I had a large envelopefilled with many different Valentines I'd saved over the years. As I revealedeach Valentine card to my students, they voted on what category to place the cardin: Pretty, Funny, or Handmade.
After we had them all sorted,we made a large graph on poster paper with those three categories listed. Eachstudent wrote his/her name on a heart cut-out and glued it in the column (orrow) of the type of Valentine he/she liked best. I always chose 'Handmade' asmy favorite because I've been creating cards and gifts with paper, paint, glue,fabric, thread, buttons, etc., since I was a young girl.
Here are photos of a few of thevintage Valentines from my collection along with a handmade fabric card I madea few years ago. The sweet red plastic heart pin was given to me when I was a childby one of my neighborhood friends. The pretty pink wooden box with theflower decal and 'For Mrs. JJ' lettering was made for me by one of my studentsback in the mid-1990s. {Each year my class called me Mrs. J.J. when they learned that my first name was June and figured out that my initials were J.J.}.

My World War II Christian militaryromance short story—'Handmade Hearts'—is a great read for Valentine's Day!
This Christian/clean & wholesomeromance is set in New Orleans and was inspired by a true story. Toward the end of his life, I asked my 'Uncle Allen' how he met his wife. He shared about how he met 'Irene' at a church social in their neighborhood in New Orleans in the early 1940s. He had been seriously wounded in Guadalcanal in the South Pacific as a young Marine and was using crutches to get around as best he could. He had many inner wounds which needed time to heal, too.
He had no way of knowing when they first met that Irene had suffered her own wartime tragedy. She bravely sought to keep her grief locked away deep inside because thinking about her loss caused her even more sorrow. She needed to be strong because she was the breadwinner for her small family.
Times were tough, but these two unique individuals made it through each day with faith, fortitude, determination, and the sincere hope of something greater just over the horizon. This inspirational short story follows the growth of Allen and Irene's relationship beginning with their chance meeting and leading forward to a lifetime spent together. 'Handmade Hearts' was created to honor this unique couple's love for and devotion to each other in a relationship which spanned seven decades.

October 20, 1944
Allenwrestled with his heavy wooden crutches. Each step was agonizing. He grimacedas he labored up the stairs of the church's fellowship hall proudly wearing hisuniform—a uniform he’d dreamed of wearing since learning of the attack on PearlHarbor on December 7, 1941.
Inaddition to the almost intolerable and constant pain, the three bullet woundsreceived from a sniper in Guadalcanal two months ago had wreaked havoc with hisplans for his life. Well, at least Istill have a life . . .
Dozensof his fellow Marines had not made it out of Guadalcanal alive on thathorrendous, life-altering night. Allen felt himself slipping into the abyss oftraumatic memories once again. The vivid memories that plagued him dailyflashed in front of his eyes. His pulse quickened, and his heart pounded loudlyin his ears. He felt clammy and nauseous, and both legs began to tremble.
Awoman's melodic voice roused him from his memories of the ambush.
"Good evening, Lance Corporal. May I holdthe door for you?"
Allen wondered how long she had been speakingto him before her voice drifted through to his subconscious. He blinked as thedetails of her face came into focus.
"Uh,what? Yes, I guess you'd better," Allen snapped.
When herecognized the hurt expression on her face, he turned toward her.
"Sorry if I sounded gruff. I just feel sohelpless being dependent on these blasted crutches!"
"Noneed to apologize or explain," she answered in a soothing voice. "Let me introduce myself. I'm IreneCarston."
