Ruby Foster loves her job as a Pack Horse librarian, but secretly she dreams of being a nurse. Since there are no schools for nursing in the hills of rural Kentucky in 1937, Ruby contents herself with harvesting medicinal plants, delivering her beloved library books, and dreaming. Dreaming mostly of a life that doesn’t leave her living in the past. Until one day she discovers that “past” camped out by the Hell for Certain creek. Could it really be Cole, the one who left her heartbroken so many years ago? Just when she starts to believe in her dreams and hope for love again, Cole reveals his true colors. Or is the truth she sees only another illusion? When nothing else in the world seems certain, can the bonds of friendship bring one searching heart and one lost soul together again?

EXCERPT:

Ruby (on harboring a desire to be a nurse and discovering old medical books)

I opened book after book, each filled with glorious drawings of the workings of the human body, more flaps to open and wonderful pages of how to do various things like wrap a wound or set a break. I was so excited; I could barely contain myself. I turned back to the front inside pages, and it read “Adapted for Home and Family Use.” This book and I were going to be new best friends. I held it out to Ava and Mattie showing them how wonderful this one was too.

“It’s fascinating,” I said, pointing to a picture of human lungs and intestines. “Don’t you think? To be able to see all the ways that things work.”

“I rather think it takes the poetry out of the human form,” Ava said. “I’d prefer to imagine something far more magical working inside us.”

I couldn’t have disagreed more which I showed by shaking my head. “On the contrary, this is poetry and magic and meaning all at once.” “Sounds like you should be a doctor then,” Mattie said and winked.

I drew in a quick breath like someone who’d been found out. But hearing it said out loud that I might be a medical professional and it not be said like a joke was strangely intoxicating. I closed the book and held it to my chest like it was a most beloved book from my childhood.

MY REVIEW:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A unique story filled withromance, mystery, and the maze of the intricacies of relationships . . .

The author has created a strongcommunity of family and friends as she kicks off her new series, Gossamer Falls. Readers are treated tothe many complexities that come with an age-old family feud, a tight-knitfamily's everyday lives, and a mystery that affects everyone in the small NorthCarolina town and the nearby resort known as The Haven.

Landry Hutton has a secretivepast which she wants to keep to herself when she and her young daughter, Eliza, move to The Haven. She is a well-respected pottery artist who finally feels atpeace in her cozy home on the grounds of The Haven where she and Eliza havelived for three years.

Callum Shaw, the youngest ofthree brothers, is a former Marine who works in the successful familyconstruction business. He harbors past traumas that he would rather avoid thandeal with openly. He is witty, courageous, and artistically talented.

Strange acts of vandalism—or arethey tragic accidents—begin to occur around Landry and The Haven. Callum,Landry, other members of the Shaw family, and the community work together tofigure out who is committing these acts of violence.

One of my favorite characters inthis story is a canine named Maisy. This golden retriever is not only a comfortdog and friend to all, she is instrumental in literally saving the day onseveral occasions. Two adorable young girls—Eliza Hutton and Abby Shaw—add joy, energy, and whimsy to the story which breaks the tension caused by the ongoingmystery.

There is a strong faith threadwoven throughout this story, and the story is completely clean in content andlanguage.

1. My husband and I moved from the south shore ofeastern Long Island to warm, sunny Central Florida almost five years ago withour three amazing kids, (ages thirty-three, twenty-five and thirteen)son-in-law, and four dogs. I am extremely family oriented. I enjoy nothing morethan spending time with my husband and kids.

2. I am a master at procrastination. I don’t have alot of writing time, but sometimes, when I do sit down to write, I just can’tseem to get going. So I tell myself there are important things I have to dobefore I can start writing. The first of those is usually Facebook, becausethere might be something interesting I “need” to know. I love to chat withreaders and other authors, so I often hang out there for a bit. Then I check allof my emails, because, you know, something really important that wasn’t therefive minutes ago, might be there now. And then I head for twitter. By the timeI finish all of that, I’m usually hungry so, I grab a snack, then finally sitdown to get started.

3. I am addicted to Diet Pepsi and chocolate!

4. I am painfully shy. As much as I love socializingand even meeting new people, I do much better one on one than I do in a group.

5. I love ice cream! It is my all-time favoritedessert, and it features in my Coffee & Cream Café Mysteries.

6. I worked the breakfast shift at my grandfather’sdeli, as well as at Friendly’s, which led to the creation of the All-DayBreakfast Café Mysteries.

7. I am very high strung and rarely relax. I go fromthe time I get up around 7:30 am until the time I go to bed, anywhere between 1:30and 3:00 am. I talk fast, I move fast, and I always have a list a mile long ofthings I have to get finished in a day. Of course, I usually forget or misplacethe list, so it doesn’t always help much.

I’d love for you to leave a comment below sharingsome things people don’t know about you and telling me if you share any of myinterests!

It’s Lights, Action, Murder as tea maven Theodosia Browning scrambles for clues in this latest installment of the New York Times bestselling series.

When Theodosia Browning reads the tea leaves on the set of the movie, Dark Fortunes, things go from spooky to worse. Lights are dimmed, the camera rolls, and red hot sparks fly as the film’s director is murdered in a tricky electrical accident.

Or was it an accident? Though the cast and crew are stunned beyond belief, nobody admits to seeing a thing. And when Theodosia’s friend, Delaine, becomes the prime suspect, Theodosia begins her own shadow investigation. But who among this Hollywood cast and crew had murder on their mind? The screenwriter is a self-centered pot head, the leading actress is trying to wiggle out of her contract, the brand new director seems indifferent, and nobody trusts the slippery-when-dry Hollywood agent.

Between hosting a Breakfast at Tiffany’s Tea, a Poetry Tea, and trying to launch her own chocolate line, Theodosia doggedly hunts down clues and explores the seemingly haunted Brittlebank Manor where the murder took place. And just when she’s ready to pounce, a Charleston Film Board member is also murdered, throwing everything into total disarray. But this clever killer will go to any lengths to hide his misdeeds as Theodosia soon finds out when she and her tea sommelier, Drayton, get caught up in a dangerous stakeout.

INCLUDES DELICIOUS RECIPES AND TEA TIME TIPS!

"Quiet on the set! Quiet on the set!"

As if someone had suddenly spun a dial and cutthe volume, there was complete and utter silence in the darkened living room ofthe dilapidated Brittlebank Manor.

"Roll film, and . . . action!" shoutedJosh Morro, the film's director.

Theodosia Browning watched, fascinated, asactors recited lines, cameras dollied in for close-ups, and producers, assistant directors, storyboard artists, set dressers, grips, writers, gaffers, production assistants, makeup artists, and costumers all stood by, ready tojump at the director's every command.

It was the first day of filming for DarkFortunes, a Peregrine Pictures feature film. And the first time tea shop ownerTheodosia had ever seen a full-fledged movie in the making. Of course, shewasn't actually in the movie. But this week was still extra special forTheodosia and Drayton Conneley, her dapper, sixty-something tea sommelier. They'd been tapped to handle the craft services table, an all-day munch festfor the cast and crew. It was proving to be a fun break from their normal rolesas hosts at the Indigo Tea Shop on Charleston's famed Church Street, where theyspent their days juggling morning cream tea, lunch, tea parties, afternoon tea, special events, and catering.

Catering. Yes, that's exactly why Theodosia andDrayton had loaded their craft services table with a bounty of tea sandwiches, lemon scones, brownie bites, banana muffins, cranberry tea bread, and handmadechocolate fudge. And of course tea, which was Drayton's specialty.

"This is exciting, yes?" Theodosiawhispered to Drayton. The director had called a sudden halt to filming and nowthe crew milled about the darkened set like shadows flitting through agraveyard.

"Exciting but strange," Drayton said, touching a hand to his bow tie. "I had no idea so much work went intofilming a single scene." He peered through the darkness to where thedirector was whispering to a cameraman. "And that director seems to be ina constant uproar."

Josh Morro, the director, was most certainlyagitated. "Gimme some light, will you?" he barked. And lightsimmediately came up revealing the shabby interior of a small, old-fashionedsitting room. "And we need something more dynamic here. A line or actionthat propels us into the heart of the storyline." Morro turned to CraigCole, the scriptwriter, and raised his eyebrows in a questioning look.

"It's already in the script, babe,"Cole shouted back at him. Cole was Hollywood hyper, rail-thin with a pinchedface and shock of bright red Woody Woodpecker hair.

"No, it's not. The script is dreck,"Morro cried as he leaped from his chair, knocking it over backward in theprocess. He was tall and angular, dressed in jeans and a faded Def LeppardT-shirt. Good-looking, handsome even, Morro had intense jade-green eyes andwore a now-popular-again gunslinger mustache.

Cole's face contorted in anger. "Watch it,pal. I wrote that script." His lips barely touched his teeth as he spatout his words.

Morro shook his head tiredly. "Fess up,man. You plagiarized a Japanese film that won a Nippon Akademii-shou back inninety-five."

Cole's face turned bright red to match his hair."That might have been the seminal inspiration," he shot back,"but every line of dialogue is completely mine!"

The director stared thoughtfully at the smallround table where a woman wearing a purple-and-gold tunic with matching turbansat across from Andrea Blair, the film's leading actress.

"She should read the tea leaves," Morrosaid slowly. "That's what we need. The fortune teller has to read the tealeaves before she delivers her line."

Why Write About Tea?

By LauraChilds, New York Times

bestselling author of Murderin the Tea Leaves

A lot of readers are curiousabout why I chose to write about tea. Actually, tea is just the hook, a subtlereference point, for writing my hybrid cozy-thrillers – what I like to callthrillzys. On the other hand, I do love tea. I’ve traveled through China,Japan, and Indonesia and had the good fortune to sample many of their exquisiteteas. In Japan I visited an actual tea plantation set on the steep slopes nearMt. Fuji.

WhenI signed my first contract with Penguin Random House to write the Tea Shop Mysteries, tea was just beginning its resurgence. Tea shops were popping up like errantmushrooms, tea kiosks were appearing at shopping malls, and women were pullingout their gloves and fancy hats to wear at tea parlors, church teas, and teaclubs.

Butwhat really appealed to me was the idea of a genteel female tea shop owner (as myprotagonist) juxtaposed against a backdrop of murder and mayhem. Now there wassomething that had never been done before. And after a bit of research, I setthe series in Charleston, SC because it’s a spooky (some say haunted) city withan actual tea garden located nearby.

SoI had my concept, my protagonist, and a fairly dramatic setting. And of courseI had all those wonderful teas to inspire my titles. Darjeeling tea jumpstartedDeath byDarjeeling, Gunpowder Green just begged to be a title, as did OolongDead,PlumTea Crazy, Haunted Hibiscus, and lots more.

Interestingly, when I began the series, I figured I would write about six or seven Tea ShopMysteries. But the books were popular from the get-go and now have taken on alife of their own. Right now I’m working on book 28 and there seems to be noend in sight. (Lucky me!)

Mytea shop owner, Theodosia Browning, established the Indigo Tea Shop along withDrayton Conneley, her tea sommelier, Haley Parker, her chef and baker, and EarlGrey, the tea shop dog. And because the Indigo Tea Shop is located smack dab inthe heart of Charleston’s 350 year-old Historic District, there’s bound to besome excitement. In fact, I always start my first chapters with a bang – we’retalking deadly poisons, shootings, hangings, car crashes, stabbings, explosions, fires, strangulations, drugs, and even a plunge from the tower of ahaunted mansion.

Andalways (always!) Theodosia gets dragged into these murders. Sometimes theyhappen when she’s catering a tea event, sometimes dear friends are impactedand, when the police come up empty, they beg her to run a shadow investigation.Of course Theodosia always complies. And comes through with insights, clues, and even criminal apprehensions. All the while running a tea shop, imagine that.

Asthe Tea Shop Mysteries have grown in popularity, many readers have asked aboutthe teas that are mentioned. Most are readily available at your local tea shopor the major online tea retailers – which I list in the back of each book. Ofcourse, some of the teas that Drayton, my bow tie-wearing, slightly snooty teaexpert, creates are totally fictitious. These might include his LamplighterBlend, Palmetto Blend, and Holiday Blend (black tea with dried cranberry, oranges, and Indian spice).

There’salso no Indigo Tea Shop on Charleston’s famed Church Street, though many of myreaders have asked to see photos and detailed plans. Which I guess means I’vesucceeded in creating a real sense of place!

Sopour yourself a cup of tea, snuggle up with my newest mystery, Murder in theTea Leaves, and get lost in a dreamy, aromatic blend of tea and mystery.

Love,

LauraChilds

About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, Scrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋8🠋About the Book: 8 Down Title: 8 Down  Series: Alaskan Cyber Hunters #2Author: Kimberley Woodhouse Publisher: Kregel Publications Release Date: February 20, 2024 Genre: Christian Romantic Suspense

8 bodies down.

8 more lives at stake.
Investigator Carrie Kintz is new blood with the Alaska Bureau of Investigation in Anchorage. But with a serial killer on the loose, there's no easing into the job. It's sink or swim. The only clues to help law enforcement stop this madman are the taunts he drops into crossword puzzles across the country--always in the same 8 DOWN position.
Carrie is desperate to prove her worth to the force and the community by catching the killer. But when she discovers signs that these deaths are just the tip of the iceberg in a frighteningly elaborate cyberattack, it's time to admit she needs help.
Calling in security specialist Scott Patteson for his expertise seems like the right move--until Carrie realizes that he may be a dangerous distraction for her heart. With her faith fading in the face of horror and uncertainty and her career in danger of ending, this is no time for flirtation.
But with a killer who is determined to prove that he's smarter than everyone else, it may be impossible to fight both the madman and their feelings for each other...
Put on your parkas as we head into a cold world of cybercrime, and hang on for the ride! Kimberley Woodhouse once again takes us on a nail-biter of a ride, and you won't want to quit until you've read the last page!" --Jaime Jo Wright, author of The Lost Boys of Barlowe Theater

"An amazing, breath-stealing, knuckle-biting thrill of a ride!" --Lynette Eason, award-winning, best-selling suspense author

EXCERPT:

Cyberterrorism. There really wasn’t any other way to wordit.

People had always hurt people. But now,in addition to guns and bombs, they could shut down the power and communicationsystems, or in this case, traffic lights.

Who would do something like that?

That’s what he didn’t want to wrap hisbrain around. The cyber part was easy, at least in his mind. He had a master’sdegree in computer science. Computers always made sense to him. Code.Programming. Hardware. Software.

But put an evil presence behind it, andall that technology could be used to harm innocent citizens.

If someone was planning anothercyberattack, his team and law enforcement needed to be ready. Anchorage wasmuch larger than Fairbanks. A lot more lives were on the line.

REVIEW:

A well-written suspense tale of a dementedmind wreaking havoc in modern-day Alaska . . .

Carrie Kintz is a new major crimes investigatorfor the Alaska Bureau of Investigation (ABI) stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. Her ultimate goal is to work for the FBI, but she is applying her collegedegree and skills to become the best investigator she can. Her mentor, Kevin, and other team members are supportive of Carrie's efforts to develop as aninvestigator.

Murders of innocent individuals begin tooccur in Anchorage and the surrounding region. When Carrie and the team realizethe deaths may be connected by cyber attacks, Scott Patteson—a security specialistwith an outside firm—is called in to assist ABI with the case.

The leader of the murder plan usescrossword puzzle clues to taunt ABI, most especially Carrie Kintz. He is wily, but the investigative team is skilled. Their dedication to solving the caseleads them on many divergent paths culminating in a brilliant conclusion to thestory.

Carrie and Scott's friendship andsubsequent romance was sweet and realistic. The faith thread in the storyincluded several meaningful conversations between the couple.

The book is completely clean in languageand content. I received a copy of this book from the publisher through JustReadPublicity Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared here are solely my own.

Title:   Forever Free
Series:   Forever #4
Author:
   Hope Toler Dougherty
Publisher:
   Scrivenings Press
Release Date:
   January 29, 2024
Genre:   Christian Contemporary Romance

Phoebe Sinclair combines her love of flowers and teaching to nurture a cut flower business on her grandfather’s land. She’s got her hands full growing the farm, growing her customer base, and dealing with her growing attraction to the aloof man who’s volunteered to help make her farming dream come true.

Can she focus on her main job, or will a pair of yearning eyes and a hurting heart divert her worthy goals?

Heath Daniels has resigned himself to a life of singleness as he watches his siblings couple up and set wedding dates. Tracking their happiness, however, is more difficult than he expected. A real struggle, in fact.

Feeling the old troubles creep back to tempt him—troubles from the bad time when he dropped out of college to explore less-than-noble pursuits—propels him to volunteer for manual labor that leaves him exhausted at the end of every day and out of trouble.

His additional hours of agri-business, however, lead to more struggles with an intriguing farmer. Does he have the strength to resist old temptations as well as a beautiful new one, too?

EXCERPT:

So, she knew it all. He’d never been this honest with anyone outsidehis family or therapy. Tremors quaked his body.

Phoebe tightened her grip on his hand. “Thank you for telling me,Heath. I don’t take this lightly, and I’ll keep it confidential.”

Nodding, he let out a pointed breath. His story was out, but safe.Gratefulness released his shoulders, eased his lungs.

“Dayna must have been a cool person for you to be interested in her.”

He stiffened. No more talk about her. He removed his hand from hertouch. “Thanks for listening. Let’s get back.” He counted to ten before shereleased the break and turned the golf cart around. As it coasted to a stop atthe shelter, his boot touched the ground for a quick getaway, but she grabbedhis arm.

“Don’t you think she’d be upset knowing you feel this guilt about her?Don’t you think she’d wish you a happy life, free of panic attacks?”

Hot and cold pin pricks played havoc through his body. Fisting hishands, he flattened his mouth and spoke quietly, careful to mask the angerscreaming for freedom. “Don’t think by knowing my story you have the right toshare your thoughts. Or give advice.”

He pushed away from the cart, searching for something, anything to helphim release the roiling emotions and the longing for a different way to assuagethem.

MY REVIEW:

 🌟  🌟  🌟  🌟  🌟

A heartwarming story of learning how tolet go of the past in order to live a fulfilling, joy-filled life . . .

There are many things I enjoyed aboutthis story, but the first thing that comes to mind is how much the author'swarm and welcoming writing style appeals to me. She infuses the story with witwhen it is warranted, emotion when it is appropriate, and real-life tragedy andtrauma when it is necessary. She doesn't back away from tough subjects such asdebilitating grief, addiction, and fear.

Phoebe Sinclair is a young woman who leftbehind a career she loved to embark on a new venture growing flowers on hergrandfather's farm. She has dreams and business goals for the new business, andreaders are treated to insight into her creative mind.

Heath Daniels is suffering in a world ofhurt, but is desperately searching for a purpose in life that will help him overcomehis personal traumas from the past. He is intelligent, helpful, and willing towork hard. His yearning to be accepted by others was heartbreaking at times.

The author has gifted readers abeautiful story filled with honesty, faith, and many examples of God's love inaction. The book is completely clean in language and content.

Felicity Jin grew up literally hanging onto Mom’s apron strings in their magical bakery in the quaint town of Pixie, California. Her mother’s enchanted baked goods, including puffy pineapple buns and creamy egg tarts, bring instant joy to all who consume them. Felicity has always been hesitant in the kitchen herself after many failed attempts, but a takeout meal gone wrong inspires her to craft some handmade fortune cookies.

They become so popular that Felicity runs out of generic fortunes and starts making her own personalized predictions. When one customer’s ill-fated fortune results in his murder, Felicity’s suspiciously specific fortune has the police focusing on her as the main culprit. Now Felicity must find a way to turn her luck around and get cleared from suspicion.

REVIEW:

A clean cozy mystery featuring a cast ofquirky characters, interesting settings, and a sprinkle of cultural history . ..

The author has created a strong ensembleof characters for this new series. Gold Bakery owners/operators Felicity Jinand her mother and Felicity's best friend, Kelvin, are the heart of the cast inmy opinion. The addition of Felicity's Godmother Alma plus some supportingcharacters draw readers into the mystery involving the death of a Gold Bakerycustomer.

Several settings were created by theauthor in the fictional small town of Pixie located near Fresno in the CentralValley of California. The Gold Bakery has an ambience that is unique andappealing. The flower shop owned by Kelvin—Love Blooms—sounds like a place Iwould love to visit; the mysterious candle shop owned by Alma—Paz Illuminationsadds some eccentricity to the story.

Several locales in Fresno are essentialto the plot. I liked the fact that a local landmark—Forestiere UndergroundGardens—became part of the adventure. (I visited this amazing CaliforniaHistorical Landmark which is also part of the National Register of HistoricSites a few decades ago. It was a very memorable experience.)

The book's back matter includes a recipefor Fated Fortune Cookies, Floral Tips from Love Blooms, and CandleEmbellishment from Paz Illuminations. Due to my personal hobbies of cooking andgardening, I enjoyed this bonus content.

The story is completely clean inlanguage and content. I received a copy of this book from the publisher throughGreat Escapes Virtual Book Tours. All of my thoughts and opinions shared hereare solely my own.
