AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

JUNE: Welcome to 'Reading, Writing & Stitch-Metic', Lee. I've enjoyed reading your website, blog, and Goodreads page because you've posted such interesting content about your life and your books. When did you declare, to yourself or to others, that you wanted to be an author? What led you to want to write children's and young adult fiction?

LEE: What a great welcome. Thank you so much!

I never did declare that I wanted to be an author. This career crept up on me…kind of. I’ve read and written and been in love with stories forever, so it was a natural transition, I guess you’d call it. And it was a news article that started me writing for young adults. I read that 1 in 5 Ivy League students admitted to some form of self-abuse, and I wanted to find out what was behind that statistic. It was supposed to be an article and it turned into my first novel. Surprise!

--------------------
JUNE:  Please share whether or not you have written, or would like to write, in genres other than middle grade and young adult fiction? Would you ever consider writing non-fiction? If yes, what would be your subject matter?

LEE:  I’ve written non-fiction—topics from plagiarism to early fire engine history to vermiculture. I kid you not. I publish my non-fiction under Cheryl McKenzie. I really enjoy non-fiction because it has to be interesting, yet factual and well researched. It appeals to my left brain, and my desire to dig into archives for information others have left for me.
Recently, I did a couple of adult fiction pieces that were published. Matilijas is a short story that tends to the literary style that I love. It was published in Lost, the Creative Writing Institute’s anthology (2018).  I also dipped my toe into horror with Heartless. It's in Tick Tock: A Stitch in Crime, (Dancing Lemur Press, May 1)
Thanks for asking this question. I forget to say anything about my other writing.
JUNE:  You're welcome. You certainly have a diverse writing resume!-------------------------------------------- JUNE:  Do you outline or sketch out your books before you begin the task of putting words on paper (or typing on your computer) or do you create the story as you write? Do you always know the ending of a book before you begin writing the manuscript?
LEE:  I have a notion of my ending before I write the story. In fact, I’ve sometimes written the end first. I always write a three sentence synopsis. I put this in the header. It’s only a guide, not how the story absolutely MUST go. When I see a different possibility, I change the synopsis and continue writing. Now that I’m writing this, it sounds very organized. It’s not. When the discussion of Panster v. Plotter raises it’s inquisitive head, I claim the semi-pantser status. Visualize a crazed author at her computer with question marks swirling around her head.
JUNE:  What a great idea about including that brief synopsis in the header so you see it as you compose. Brilliant!   -------------------------------------------JUNE:  When you're seeking inspiration for a new story, what do you do to get into the correct mind-set to write? Do you listen to music? Do yoga? Play with your cats? Read? Watch a favorite movie or TV show? Journal?
LEE:  I’m out of cats at the moment, unfortunately. I do practice Yoga, but interestingly enough—at least to me—it’s when I’m out hiking or buying toothpaste that ideas pounce. What? And where’s my notepad (the paper kind)? But once the idea settles into in my head, if it’s a solid one, it sticks, and I don’t need to write down anything. (I confess to some scribbling on toothpaste receipts) The problem is that after the idea comes, then the characters show up, and they talk to me for months. It’s sleepless nights. It’s 4am at the computer. It’s “Why did I think this was a good idea?” Then it’s over and I’m very content for five minutes before I think, “I need some toothpaste.” And off I go again.
JUNE:  I frequently have my best ideas when I'm out walking around the neighborhood or at a park or botanical garden.-----------------------------------------JUNE:  What is your current work in progress?  Will there be a Book Four in this 'Adventures of Pete and Weasel' Series?
LEE:  That’s an interesting question. And the answer is I’m writing my first ever fantasy for young adults. I said I’d never do it. I promised myself, “NO YA FANTASY. EVER.” And then…I bought toothpaste.
I’m in love with Pete and Weasel and all the other weird and wonderful characters who have kept me up at night. Aunt Lizzie. Harriet Hadley. Fannon, the clairvoyant alligator familiar (lots of toothpaste buying around the time I thought of him). So who knows? If I can think of another exciting adventure that I can take with the boys, yes. Book Four. Bring it on.------------------------------------------JUNE:  From reading the Author Bio on your website, you have lived in a lot of cities and countries. What was your favorite place to live and why? Assuming you could move anywhere in the world where you have not yet lived, where would you go? Why there?
LEE:  I was young and the world was one huge playground waiting for me. I guess I’d have to say that I loved living in Laos. I couldn’t have landed in a more foreign place—Gilroy, California to Vientiane, Laos?—but it was a favorite for me. Of course, my choice is tinged by time. If I could live someplace now other than where I live (which I love BTW) I’d choose the south of France. Why? Because it’s a lot like where I live now, but it has castles. Instead of toothpaste purchases for inspiration, I could use castles. --------------------------------------------JUNE:  Thank you!
LEE:  No. Thank you! You asked fun questions and let me have play a bit. I always love doing that.--------------------------------------------ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

~ COVER REVEAL FOR 'WHISPERING WINDS OF SPRING ~

~ COVER REVEAL & GIVEAWAY ~  --  'The Whispering Winds of Spring' -- From the Series:  'Seasons' by Author Robin E. Mason

ABOUT THE BOOK:Series: Seasons
Genre:
Historical, Romance
Publisher: Bird’s Nest Books
Publication date: May 31, 2018

Amidst the clamor of confusion, can she hear the whisper of her memories?

The southern town of Saisons lies at the crossroads between North and South, progressive and genteel antebellum life. Between East and West, between history and heritage, and new frontiers. Downton Abbey meets Gone With the Wind.

It’s 1912, in a world where slavery is dying and women’s rights are rising, and four young women who once shared a bond—and experienced a tragedy—question their own truth.

Simone Dubois’ life was unraveling. All she had known and held dear was gone from her. At ten, all she wanted was to escape beneath the black waters of the Edisto River. She couldn’t know her whole life would be stolen from her.

When she returns to Saisons sixteen years later, she has no memory of ever having been there. Not even that it was her birthplace.

Enlisting the help of her childhood friend, Mercedes—whose name stayed with her, if in shadowy dreams only—Simone encounters misty memories, and stirs up more mystery than she started with.
 ABOUT THE AUTHOR:robin-e-mason_1_orig
I’ve always had voices—er, stories in my head. I once said I should write them all down so someone could write them someday. I had no idea at the time that someone was me!

I have been writing since 1995, and began working in earnest on my debut novel, Tessa in 2013.  Meanwhile, I cranked out a few dozen poems, made countless notes for story ideas, and earned my BFA in Interior Design.  I lived with depression for many years, and the inherent feelings of worthlessness and invisibility; I didn’t want to be who I was and struggled with my own identity for many years.  My characters face many of these same demons.

I write stories of identity conflict. My characters encounter situations that force the question, “Who am I really?” For all who have ever wondered who you are or why you’re here, my stories will touch you in a very real—maybe too real—and a very deep way. I know, I write from experience.

SNIPPET:
Kathryn awkwardly squeezed past George to leave the room. The electricity between them was almost palpable and he would have bet money she felt it as much as he did. The buzz while she passed him emphasized the emptiness he felt at Kathryn’s departure and added to his emotional strain.
It wasn’t until he started undressing that he realized how out of place his shirt and slacks from work appeared. The elegant cut of his business wear shouted ‘stranger’ in the make-shift bedroom of the back pantry of an old farmhouse. And until this very moment, George would have agreed and embraced the ‘stranger’ label. Now he wasn’t so sure he liked it for himself.
Loosening his tie, he slid it off his neck and rested it on the end of the bed. Pulling his shirt tail out of his pants, he unbuttoned a few buttons and then unhooked the waistband of his slacks. He looked around for a hanger, but the cupboard in the wall held only shelves and he couldn’t see anywhere to hang his pants and shirt.
“Oh!” Kathryn’s voice surprised George and he grabbed the wall to keep from falling over while his heart jumped around in his throat.“I’m so sorry. I should have knocked. I didn’t know you would get ready so fast,” she said. The merry twinkling in her eyes as she looked him up and down in his disheveled state brought back that crimson rush.
“Did you want something?” George asked in his most boss-like manner.
Kathryn swallowed and her eyes burned into his. He hung his hands to his side, feeling exposed, even though he was still completely dressed. Had he said that wrong?
Kathryn recovered before George could answer himself. “I brought you these,” she said, holding out a pair of plaid pajama pants. “They belong to my brother-in-law so they should fit. I thought you might be more comfortable in case you had to get up in the night…or something.”
George couldn’t stop the smile as he watched Kathryn’s embarrassed face match his own for color. “Oh, uh, thank you.”Kathryn turned away quickly, letting him know how to find the bathroom as she hustled through the kitchen.
Two hours later, George laid on his back, his arms crossed behind his head and stared at the ceiling. Visions of Kathryn sitting at the dinner table, tucking her nieces and nephew into bed, and bringing him pajamas refused to fade away and let him sleep. The memory of her uncontrollable laughter echoed in his heart. Rolling over, he buried his face into the pillow and groaned. The scent of her soft floral perfume infiltrated his defenses until he gave in and relaxed. It was only then that he finally succumbed to a fitful sleep.

~ Coach Wooden's Forgotten Teams - Revell Reads ~

~ WEDNESDAY NON-FICTION FEATURE ~ -- 'COACH WOODEN'S FORGOTTEN TEAMS' -- Stories and Lessons from John Wooden's  Summer Basketball Camps Written by Pat Williams with Jim DenneyForeward by Nan Wooden

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Rediscover the man, the coach, and the legend you thought you knew
Legendary UCLA basketball coach John Wooden is known for his record-breaking run of NCAA championships and for working with some of the best players in the sport. His principles for success have been used by not only coaches and athletes but also entrepreneurs and leaders of all kinds. But his reach stretches even farther than most people know--into the hearts and lives of the people who learned the game of basketball on one of Coach Wooden's forgotten teams.

For nearly twenty years, John Wooden ran scores of summer youth basketball camps, imparting wisdom and teaching skills to thousands of boys and girls between the ages of eight and fifteen. Most would not grow up to play professional or even college ball, but all of them found their lives changed by their interaction with the greatest coach who ever lived. In those camps, Coach Wooden also impacted hundreds of camp counselors and assistant coaches.

This one-of-a-kind book shares their inspiring stories, along with six fundamental lessons from Coach Wooden for a life of success and unforgettable impact on others.
ENDORSEMENTS:

"Pat uncovers new insights into my father's life--his values, his faith, his intensely competitive spirit, and his serving heart."--Nan Wooden

"Pat Williams's great new book, Coach Wooden's Forgotten Teams, brings it all back--the fun, the excitement, and the joy of playing basketball under the instruction of Coach John Wooden himself!"--Ann Meyers Drysdale

MY REVIEW:
I chose this book for review when it became available through the Revell Reads blogger program because I have watched John Wooden's PBS television show on his 'Pyramid of Success'. I enjoyed the show especially because of Coach Wooden's kind, heartwarming, folksy wisdom; and I wanted to read this book to learn more about his impact on youth basketball players.

This book was well-researched and was sprinkled with quotations from Coach Wooden, anecdotes from his UCLA players/summer campers/summer camp coaches/friends/family, and biographical information about this unique individual. This biographical information is included mostly in Chapter Eight, and I wish it would have been moved up to the beginning of the book so I would have known more about his background when I was reading about his various jobs and championships.

Throughout the book men and women shared examples of how Coach Wooden's fundamentals about life had a positive influence on their lives. Moreover, they gave concrete examples of how his teachings affected their lives outside of the basketball court. Many mentioned Coach Wooden had impacted their lives as husbands/wives, fathers/mothers, teachers, coaches, and citizens in general.

The coach's simple teachings have had a ripple effect because his players and campers have gone on to teach their players and campers how to be high-quality contributing members of society, and so his influence lives on and on. What a legacy John Wooden left of this world.

Two of my favorite pieces of wisdom garnered from Coach Wooden's teachings are to 'always do the best of which I am capable'.  The other is to make it a practice to show kindness to, or do a good deed for, someone each day without the expectation of being repaid in any way.

**Interesting fact:  John Wooden lived to be almost 100 years old. Born:  10/14/1910. Died:  6/4/2010.
----------------------------------------------------------------
I highly recommend this book for fans of Christian non-fiction, sports fans, men and women seeking to learn and grow in their own lives, and for individuals who seek to learn more about this fascinating man.

Disclosure from blogger: I received a hardcover copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review to be posted on my blog and on retailer sites and Goodreads. I received no compensation for my review or posts here or on any other site.

~ MMGM Little House in the Big Woods ~

~ MIDDLE-GRADE HISTORICAL
FICTION FEATURE ~
-- 'Little House in the Big Woods' Little House Book One -- Written by:  Laura Ingalls WilderIllustrated by:  Garth Williams

LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS

ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Based on the real-life adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in the award-winning Little House series, which has captivated generations of readers. This edition features the classic black-and-white artwork from Garth Williams.

Little House in the Big Woods takes place in 1871 and introduces us to four-year-old Laura, who lives in a log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. She shares the cabin with her Pa, her Ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their lovable dog, Jack.
Pioneer life isn’t easy for the Ingalls family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But they make the best of every tough situation. They celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do their spring planting, bring in the harvest in the fall, and make their first trip into town. And every night, safe and warm in their little house, the sound of Pa’s fiddle lulls Laura and her sisters into sleep.

The nine books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura’s real childhood as an American pioneer, and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier, and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR {from Goodreads}:
Ingalls wrote a series of historical fiction books for children based on her childhood growing up in a pioneer family. She also wrote a regular newspaper column and kept a diary as an adult moving from South Dakota to Missouri, the latter of which has been published as a book.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR {from Goodreads}:
Generations of children picture their favorite fictional characters as drawn by Garth Williams. Thus the unforgettable dapper mouse, Stuart Little, or the kindhearted spider, Charlotte and her pig friend, Wilbur. And many other animals (bears, dogs, kittens, crickets) fantastic creatures (elves, fairies) and children and grown-ups in books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, George Selden, Charlotte Zolotow, Else H. Minarik and many others. Garth Williams was also the writer of seven children's books, like Baby Farm Animals, but it is primarily as an illustrator that he will always be remembered.
A LOOK BACK AT MY MIDDLE-GRADE THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS BOOK:When I was a middle-grade student several decades ago, the 'Little House' books were probably my favorite series. I devoured each installment, though I doubt I read them in any particular order. As I have mentioned previously, I love history; and I especially love post-Civil War American history. Living in California since I was six years old has instilled in me an appreciation for the pioneer spirit. I believe these books by Laura Ingalls Wilder were perhaps my first exposure to historical fiction depicting this era.
I vividly remember this book because it is the book in the series where Laura shares her vivid recollection of their first Christmas in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. In this book Laura's mother, Caroline Ingalls, makes Laura a ragdoll for a Christmas gift. The doll is sentimentally named Charlotte after Laura's maternal grandmother. The illustrator, Garth Williams, included Charlotte on the cover art for this book. You can see Laura gazing adoringly at her new doll as her family looks on from the background.
As a young girl I adored my dolls, and as a sewing designer I had the pleasure of having one of my original design rag dolls published a few years ago in a magazine headquartered in the United Kingdom. I enjoy stitching up cloth dolls and their clothes and dolls quilts for the local women's and children's shelter whenever I have time, so this chapter in the book has special meaning to me.
This book carefully describes each and every detail about the doll's features and how Laura's mother made it. She used pokeberry to draw the mouth, buttons for the eyes, black yarn for the hair, and calico fabric for the dress.
Another thing I remember about these books is that our school librarian, Mrs. MacSwain, had a neat program where she allowed readers to draw a new book cover for a book they had read. The student would write their own book blurb {a sort of brief book report} and author bio on the inner flaps.
Mrs. MacSwain would then replace the original dust jacket with the student's cover, carefully enclosed in a crisp new cellophane dust cover. It was an honor to be chosen for this task, and as a voracious reader it was exciting to see my book covers scattered throughout the library.
Now I view my blog as a journal of my book reports, and I still enjoy sharing the good news with other book lovers!
I recently reread all of the books in this series, and as an adult I was just as fascinated with the lives of Laura and her family as I was way back in my middle-grade years.
Did you read any series back in your middle-grade years that you have since reread as an adult? If yes, which series and author?

~ Book Blast for Scarlet ~

~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE ~-- BOOK BLAST FOR 'SCARLET'BY AUTHOR JEN GEIGLE JOHNSON --
- Post Includes a Book Spotlight,
Excerpt & Giveaway -     ABOUT THE BOOK:  The roads in and out of Paris are heavily guarded, but the dead have easy passage out of the city. A ragged old woman transports the coffins of the most recent victims of the guillotine and is waved on unimpeded. Later, the same crone watches five French aristocrats step out of their coffins unscathed. Not beheaded but spirited away to safety by that most elusive of spies: the Pimpernel. Or, as she’s known in polite society, Lady Scarlet Cavendish. When not assuming her secret identity as a hero of the French Revolution, Scarlet presents herself as a fashionable, featherbrained young widow flitting about London. In truth, this façade is merely a diversion designed to conceal her clandestine work in France. Among members of the doomed French aristocracy, the Pimpernel is renowned for her bravery and cunning. But when tasked with rescuing handsome Comte Matteo Durand, she faces an unprecedented challenge: she is falling in love with the man. If ever there were a time to keep her head, it is now— because in a world brimming with intrigue, she is not the only one harboring secrets. And if Scarlet doesn’t take care, Madame la Guillotine may finally catch up with the Pimpernel.    PRAISEfor 'Scarlet' "Jen handled her adaptation beautifully, she makes the history of this tumultuous era come alive. Those familiar with the fictional world of The Pimpernel will appreciate her salute to the original and lovers of history will applaud how she makes the French Revolution personal, and intimate." "She has a beautiful grasp on our innate desire for freedom and infuses that into her story. The plot is heart rending and suspenseful. The romance is toe-tingling and the characters are so realistic, for the first time in my life, I felt emotionally connected to Marie Antoinette. With a strong female character you can root for this is one of my new favorite Pimpernel adaptations."
EXCERPT:"I think you look handsome." "Well, that is something, but coming from a woman in your current attire, I hesitate to lay much weight to your approval." His eyebrow quirked as his gaze searched her from toe to headdress. A chuckle escaped. "What can you mean by dressing us in such a manner?" His incredulity gave her pause to question. She had pushed the ridiculous to its upper limits, hoping their decoy would further dispel any possible suspicion of her involvement in serious rescue attempts from France. And by involving Matteo, perhaps convince a few suspicious minds of his new allegiance to wealth, pleasure, and fashion. "I have a reputation to uphold, my dear." "Am I to now share in your love of fashion extremes?" He gestured to the embroidery on his sleeves. "For France, darling. If we appear thus, we set ourselves as the supreme leaders in fashion. And besides the prince himself, everyone will turn to us." All true, naturally, but an equally important great disguise and sleight of hand were at play as well. "And you feel that men of substance, men I would care to influence, will have any respect for me at all? I am wearing purple breeches. Could I not simply wear my usual tan or black?"

--SNIPPET: The Wizard’s Workshop is dotted with handwritten notes and jokes from a previous owner along with silly annotations for each experiment such as: TROLL SNOT OR GOBLIN GOO Many people still prefer troll snot over Goblin Goo, however it is no longer legal to collect snot form trolls, and therefore Goblin Goo should be used instead. Please note that anyone found picking a troll’s nose or collecting troll snot will face a board of inquiries lead by the head troll, Mr. Iva P. Brain. (GOBLIN GOO experiment pg. 40)

ZOMBIE FIRE This potion was invented by Professor Willy Rott in 1879. Willy Rott was a well-known scientist, but after making this potion several times, he is now a well-known zombie. (He was not a very fast runner). (ZOMBIE FIRE experiment pg. 36)

EXPLODING FOG FLUID This potion was made famous by Mr. Darren Deeds who made a sport of putting Exploding Fog Fluid into the drinks of giants and then drawing mustaches on their faces once they were asleep. Although this can be a fun past time, please note that it is dangerous. As Mr. Darren Deeds can attest to, it is not very fun when a giant refuses to drink the potion and decides to sit on you instead. (EXPLODING FOG FLUID experiment pg. 52)

NOTE: If you want to give the stones additional power then you must perform the spell under the light of a full moon, standing next to a large tree (preferably a sycamore tree), facing east, while wearing mismatched socks. (MAGICAL STONES pg. 87)

MMGM Maker Lab Outdoors

~ MARVELOUS MIDDLE-GRADEMONDAY S.T.E.A.M. FEATURE ~ -- 'SMITHSONIAN MAKER LAB OUTDOORS: 25 SUPER COOL PROJECTS TO BUILD,  INVENT, CREATE, DISCOVER' -- Written by Author Jack Challoner

LEARN MORE ON GOODREADS
ABOUT THE BOOK: {from Goodreads}:
Twenty-eight science projects and experiments to be done outside will spark kids' creativity and help them develop science skills through hands-on learning.

Projects focus on Earth and the environment, plants and animals, rocks and minerals, and space, bringing science learning home and into the backyard. Young scientists can make a cave system and find out about underground rivers, construct a working model of tectonic plates and learn about earthquakes, build a telescope and look to the planets and stars, and more.

Supporting STEAM education initiatives and the Maker Movement, Maker Lab: Outdoors includes 25 interactive projects to inspire kids' creativity and their scientific side, and, as the founder of Maker Faire Dale Dougherty says, "to realize with their hands what they can imagine in their minds."

With stunning photography, succinct step-by-step instructions, and detailed explanations, Maker Lab: Outdoors takes readers on a journey of discovery. A must-have for every young scientist curious about their surroundings, and for makers, crafters, and those who enjoy exploring the outdoors.

MY REVIEW:This book is such a fabulous resource for individuals who teach and work with middle-graders! The book is divided into four thematic chapters:  Nature Watch, World of Weather, Water Power, and Earth and Sky. There are several projects in each chapter.
I cannot say enough about the quality of the projects in this book. From the very first project--'How to Build a Periscope'--to the last project--'Paper Sundial'--these are engaging, useful, fun projects for middle-graders and adults alike!
In addition to the project photos and instructions, there is an introduction to each 'how to' sharing the science behind the DIY activity. The 'Wormery' project extendS the idea of the project to the 'real-world science' of composting. The 'Soil-Free Planter' extends to aquaponics. The 'Brilliant Barometer' extends to meteorology and isobars. You get the picture.
Two of my favorite projects are the 'How to Grow Mycelium' in the Nature Watch chapter and the 'Anemometer' in the World of Weather chapter. The mycelium-in-a-jar project is unique; I've never seen it in any other science manual or STEAM education book before.
The author has done an excellent job of explaining difficult theories in interesting, yet down-to-earth terms. The projects are clever and are supported with user-friendly stepped-out instructions with photos. Makers are encouraged to use recycled goods from around the house, i.e. plastic bottles, cardboard, glass jars, shoe boxes, etc.
Back matter includes templates for the projects, a thorough glossary, and an index.
Highly-recommended for teachers, science camp counselors, parents/grandparents/care-givers, and teens and adults interested in upping their own science knowledge! {I'll admit I learned a lot about fungus/spores/mushrooms, weather, and aquaponics.}
I borrowed this book from the 'new book' shelves in the children's section of my local public library. --------------------

~ REVELL READS BLOG TOUR 'PELICAN HARBOR' ~

~ FRIDAY FICTION FEATURE ~ 'PELICAN POINT: A Harbor Point Novel'
by Author Irene Hannon --Book Spotlight, Excerpt & Review--

ABOUT THE BOOK:In the midst of life's storms, unexpected love is a beacon of hope.

A crumbling lighthouse is not part of the inheritance Army doctor Ben Garrison expects to claim when he journeys to Hope Harbor. Fresh out of the service, he wants only to unload the tower of bricks, decompress from years of treating battlefield trauma, and prepare to launch his civilian career.

Hope Harbor Herald editor Marci Weber has other ideas. She may not be a Hope Harbor native, but the small Oregon seaside town has become home--and she's determined to save the Pelican Point landmark.

Sparks fly as the two go head-to-head over the fate of the lighthouse. But when they start to cooperate, a different kind of fire ignites. Can Hope Harbor heal the hearts of these two romance-wary souls?

Come home to Hope Harbor...
where hearts heal--and love blooms
--Praise for the Hope Harbor Novels:

"A place of emotional restoration that readers will yearn to visit."--Publishers Weekly on Hope Harbor

"Summer romance doesn't get much better than this."--Examiner.com on Sea Rose Lane

"A beautiful love story."--RT Book Reviews on Sandpiper Cove

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Irene Hannon is the bestselling and award-winning author of more than fifty contemporary romance and romantic suspense novels, including Dangerous Illusions, as well as the Men of Valor, Heroes of Quantico, Guardians of Justice, and Private Justice series. In addition to her many other honors, she is a three-time winner of the prestigious RITA Award from Romance Writers of America. MY REVIEW:
After I had read the first few chapters of this book I started asking myself why I hadn't read any of this author's previous books. The depth of her characters, flaws and all, is so engaging. The setting of Hope Harbor on the Oregon coast is appealing on many levels. And for a history buff such as myself, the focus on the renovation of an historical lighthouse was an added bonus!

Ben Garrison returns to Hope Harbor upon the death of his grandfather, Ned Garrison, a beloved longtime member of the community. Ben spent summers with his grandfather during his childhood, tween, and teen years after Ben's father basically abandoned him due to divorce. Ned is a guiding force in Ben's life and his faith walk.

Ben is a US Army combat orthopedic surgeon who has served in the Middle East. He is looking to make a change in his career. When he learns he has inherited a decrepit historic lighthouse at Pelican Point, he feels burdened by having to deal with the property before he can move to Ohio to join the new medical practice which he is joining.

Marci Weber is the owner, publisher, and editor of the small local newspaper, the Hope Harbor Herald. She is dealing with her own traumas from her past and is reluctant to begin a friendship with Ben Garrison until she takes a moment to realize he is not a bad guy after all. It doesn't hurt matters when she admits to herself that she finds him to be attractive.

One reason I enjoyed this story is because the community came together to work on saving the lighthouse from demolition and the subsequent development of the historic property. The surrounding characters in the community were varied and interesting. From the mysterious Charley to the struggling young couple of Rachel and Greg, the subplots in this book are gratifying. In fact, I felt as if the story of Rachel and Greg was worthy of its own book. {Maybe the author have the same opinion.}

If you are looking for a good read to make you cry, laugh, and root for the charactes and their close-knit town, 'Pelican Point' should be on your 'To Be Read--Soon' book list.

Highly-recommended for fans of inspirational romance, Christian fiction, clean romance, and Northwest Coast fiction.

Disclosure from blogger: I received a paperback copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review to be posted on my blog and on retailer sites and Goodreads. I received no compensation for my review or posts here or on any other site.
