My chat with Calum Wade from #LightOfTheMoon

MN: Hi, Calum! Thanks so much for stopping by and hanging with me this week! I’m so excited you’re here!
CW: Thank you for having me.
MN: So, Calum some serious stuff goes down in Light of the Moon. Wow. I’ve gotta say you are pretty awesome. That being said what scares you the most?
CW: Honestly, I think the thing that scares me the most is losing the people I love. Kate, especially. Tyler. I wonder how I will be able to handle the things to come, how I’ll save the people I care most about. Because when the day is gone, all I really want is to be safe and sound with the people who make my heart beat a little faster.

MN: If you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life—what would it be and why?
CW: My best friend Tyler’s mom makes the best food, so anything from her hands. In the end, I don’t know if I could pick just one thing to eat forever. As long as it’s a meal shared between friends, I wouldn’t care.
MN: What are the top three qualities (physical or not) that you look for in a significant other?
CW: In Kate, I love her courage, strength, and loyalty. I love how she makes me feel. And I know, more than anything, that Kate is a girl stronger than I am, and I love that about her.
MN: Well, since you mentioned her. It’s obvious that Kate’s a pretty tough cookie. What would be your favorite and least favorite things about her? I promise I won’t tell. *winks*
CW: My favorite thing? Her eyes. My least favorite thing? At night when I can’t fight sleep any longer, I hate how when I close my eyes I can’t see hers anymore.
MN: So. Sweet. If you were given a “do-over” card and you could re-do any event in your life what would it be and why?
CW: I would save Tyler. It kills me not knowing what happened to him, if he’s still alive. I promise I’ll do everything I can to save him, find him. And I won’t stop until I have the truth.

MN: I have no doubts that you’ll prevail, Calum. No. Doubts. So, what’s next for you, Calum?
CW: With Morphis dead and gone, the Order needs to be rebuilt. But first, my heart will always rest with Kate. She is trapped, and I will do anything to get her back. Even now, I’m planning a way to save her. Because without Kate, it feels as though the sun is touched by shadow. I need my light back.
MN: *swoon* You’re such an amazing guy. Alrighty! You’ve been such a great sport Calum. Before you go, I’ve got one set of questions left—the speed round! Are you ready? Respond with the first thing that comes to mind.
Fruit? Apple.Holiday? Christmas.Season? Fall.Color? Purple.Place? The sky.Person? Kate.Scent? Vanilla.
Major thanks to David for setting up this amazing interview with the one and only Calum Wade! I’ve never met a more noble good hearted man.
This is the last week before the super mega awesome giveaway! Yay! I cannot wait! Be sure to earn your chance to win a David James book AND answer the bonus question for an extra chance at the SUPER MEGA AWESOME GIVEAWAY! You could name a character AND get more titles by David! Cry Me a River Blog Hop *Excerpt*

Cry Me a Riverby Devyn DawsonContemporary Romance

***MATURE CONTENT WARNING****
This book is intended for 17+ due to language, sexual situations, and drug references

Caide thought he had a handle on his life...until he realized he doesn't.

He's 23, a professional chef, has his own TV show, a house at the beach, and a beautiful daughter; who can ask for more? That was his question until his ex-girlfriend (and mother to his child) dies from an accidental overdose. Caide is thrust into the courts and they order him to go to Al Anon meetings and parenting classes.

He has a foul mouth and bad attitude about being forced to go to a support group when he doesn't have a problem. He has a few drinks before he goes to Al Anon and comes face to face with River Murphy, the pretty group leader. She seems all together and doesn't fall for his gritty attitude like other girls do. One night, he finds her after being roofied in a bar, he takes her home to make sure she's okay. The next thing they know, River's life is being turned upside down and she doesn't know why. Caide steps in and the two find themselves in the middle of trying to repair their broken hearts.

Clean version excerpt.Chapter OneWe loved with a love That was more than loveEdgar Allan Poe
August 7
My mind is wandering as the priest walks up and down the aisle swinging back and forth an elaborate incense burner.  The scent reminds me of the last time I was in church; it had to have been at least three years ago. I don’t go to church because it isn’t my thing to sit next to liars, the same people who I’ve seen in the bars, or wasted at the beach.  Not much gets past people in our little town, Emerald Isle, North Carolina, population 3800.  Most homes along the 14 miles of coastal Emerald Isle, are rental vacation property.  The tenants only rent the beach houses for a week, just long enough to party, make false promises and move on to the next.  Someone coughing brought my thoughts back to the here and now.  Right now, I’m in church with a massive headache and a hard-on.
My damn BLANK doesn’t care where it is, church, school, sitting at Sunday brunch with my mother.  No, my BLANK pretty much has a mind of its own.  I take in a few deep breaths and remind myself why I’m here.
My daughter is sitting with her grandparents on the front row.  Heather’s dad hates me for things I didn’t do.  Heather’s mom hates me because I walk the earth.  She’d sooner see me six feet under than anywhere near my daughter, Lucy Marie.  I look over to where they are sitting and Lucy’s standing up and pointing to the person in the pew behind her.  Her eyes are bright and her chubby cheeks jiggle when she bounces around.  My heart swells with love every time I look at her.  They don’t realize I’m here; I snuck in at the last minute.
Everyone stands and holds hands as the preacher prays.  The woman on my left has wiped her nose with a tissue for the last forty-five minutes.  That’s all I can think about, her snot rag.  Maybe I am a germ-a-phobe, but is it wrong to not want someone’s nasty germs all over my hand?  I have hand sanitizer in my pocket, which I’ll use as soon as we part ways.  Until I do, I’ll fixate on the fact, I have her snot all over my hand.  I try to focus on the preacher, my brain is telling me to get up and leave before anyone realizes I’m here, but I can’t.  I’m not leaving until I hold Lucy.  I haven’t seen her since the week of the Fourth of July.  Heather brought her over and wanted me to keep her for the night so she could go out and party.  She fell off the radar for five days.  Her parents came over looking for Lucy and acted as though I stole my own daughter.  They berated me because I didn’t call them right away.  At least I called them.  The minute her mom saw a few empty beer cans on my kitchen counter, she flew off the handle and started screaming at me.  Did she bother to remember I’m twenty-three and four beer cans doesn’t make for a drunken stupor.
Everyone stands and pew by pew we line up and walk to the front of the church.  My heart races, every step feels like I am one step closer to God and to reality.  I’ve never taken communion; it always scared me to eat the body of Christ.  When you’re a little kid, your thoughts are literal and I didn’t want to be a cannibal.
There are two people ahead of me, my palms are sweaty.   I hear people whispering, I’m sure they’re pointing at me and calling me names.  “Caide is a douche”… “Caide is an alcoholic”… “Caide is a sinner”…  They’re probably not dropping the f-bomb in church, since they’re all perfect.
Someone nudges me from behind, “You’re next,” she whispers.
I turn and I swear my heart stops.  The white casket is perfect for Heather.  The lining of the casket is pastel pink satin and her blond hair is curled and cascades down over her breasts.  My heart suddenly starts and is pounding in my ears.  My throat closes up and for the first time since the day Lucy was born, my eyes fill with tears.  Heather is dressed in a pink floral dress with a little white sweater.  Lucy’s teddy bear is tucked up under her hand as well as a picture of the three of us when things were better.
My heart isn’t prepared for the pain, the complete and utter pain.  I’ve never been to a funeral before and now I’m sure I never want to go to one again.  Her face is peaceful, something it hasn’t been in months.  I know they covered her arms to hide her track-marks and the make-up covers the dark circles under her eyes.  We were in-love once upon a time.  She’s the mother of my daughter and she’s dead.  I can’t wrap my brain around it all, how could she do this?  How could she check out like that?  She was supposed to always be in my life, but I wanted her happy and healthy.  I shouldn’t have turned my back on her.  If only I had tried harder, she’d still be here.
Without thinking, I reach over and brush my hand across her cheek.  I almost came apart in front of everyone.  Her skin was so cold and hard, like a cement bench in the dead of winter.  “Oh baby-girl, what happened?  I’m so sorry….I’m so sorry….I’m sorry I wasn’t there for you.  Heather baby, you were going to get clean.  What happened?  How did it happen?”  I shake my head back and forth and I know my tears are dripping on her dress.  It was her present from me when she lost her pregnancy weight.  I bought the dress during my lunch break and gave it to her when I got home that night.  She put it on and danced around the house like a little girl in a new dress.  I loved her that night and we made love until we both were exhausted.  Now she’s dead and I’m alive.  I take a letter from my suit pocket and placed it next to her.  “I’ll always love you baby-girl.  Don’t worry about Lucy, I’ll take care of her and she’ll know how much you loved her.  I promise.”
Someone clears their throat behind me and I take that as my time is up.  As I turn around I make eye contact with Heather’s mom.  She motions for me to come over to her.  Lucy sees me and her whole face lights up with excitement.  Her arms reach for me and I see how reluctant her grandma is to hand her over, but she knows Lucy loves me.
“Caide,” She says curtly.
“Darla, I’m sorry for your loss.”  What else could I say?
“I don’t want to discuss our differences today; right now we’re here to honor my daughter.  We’ll meet you in the lobby, please take Lucy with you.”  Her eyes are cold, her hands clenched together.  Darla’s in her early fifties but could pass for forty.  If I didn’t know her personally, I’d think she’s good looking.  Unlike Heather’s blond hair, Darla’s is short and dark auburn.  Darla and her husband, Alan, married right after high-school.  They went to college together and while they were still in school, Alan invested in a small company called Wal-Mart.  They made their money with blood, sweat and tears.  Alan is notorious for telling his rags to riches story to anyone who will listen.  Today, both of them look ten years older than they are.
And like that, I have my daughter to myself for a few minutes.  She reaches for my face, placing both hands on my cheeks and leans forward, giving me the sloppiest kiss I’ve ever had.  I wrap my arms around her as tight as possible and tell her how much I’ve missed her.  Lucy is an eighteen month old firecracker.  She has deep dimples in her cheeks and bright blue eyes to go along with her dark red ringlets all around her head.  Heather and I thought she’d be bald forever, we actually asked the doctor if something was wrong with her.  He laughed it off and told us she was perfectly normal and right before her birthday, her hair started growing like crazy.  Memories like these make me realize that’s exactly what they’ll be forever and never again will we laugh about our little bald pumpkin.
Heather and I were together until Lucy was almost six months old.  One day, I came home from work early to find her and the next door neighbor, Joan, snorting cocaine.  Neither of them realized I was there and after they did their line, they started to make out.  I was livid!  Thankfully, Lucy was asleep in her crib.  We fought about her bringing drugs into our house with our daughter in the next room.  She tried to rationalize that making out with another girl isn’t cheating, it’s a freebie.
It was me who called Heather’s parents and asked if Heather and Lucy could move in with them.  I would have kept Lucy if my schedule wasn’t so unpredictable.  They agreed it would be easier for them to keep an eye on Heather if she were living with them.  We officially broke up about a month later.  She was doing harder drugs and her parents were with Lucy full-time.  I thought Heather would straighten up after she got the partying stage over with…she didn’t.
A heavy-set woman with big hair comes over to me in the lobby, telling me she is Aunt Josephine and she was asked to take Lucy back to the house.  I’ve met her before at a family function or two.  It’s time for Lucy to have a nap anyway.  She shouldn’t go to the graveside any more than I should.  I kissed her goodbye and promised her I’d give her a call tomorrow.  My parents are going to the graveside service; they weren’t able to get coverage at the restaurant to make it here in time.  I’ll text mom and tell her I’m going home, she’ll understand,.

Light of the Moon Excerpt *Indie Author of the Month*

It's excerpt week! *bounces around the blog* The dashing David James is giving us a glimpse into Light of the Moon! Yay! But before I give you the goods, take a gander at this....
Amazon Barnes & Noble  One night long ago, a constellation disappeared and fell from the sky in the form of a boy... Secrets are being kept in the sleepy town of Lakewood Hollow, Colorado. Life unfolds in shades of red for Calum, until a mysterious girl named Kate Black enrolls at his school and everything changes. Suddenly a dangerous world of demons, enchanters, and witches unfurls before Calum. He learns that the stars have forever held his destiny, and that the constellations above are much more than what they seem. But life is not so easy for Calum, and he can feel his heart beat faster whenever Kate is close. Worse, Kate's blood holds a dark secret even more dangerous than the war between the demons and enchanters. Soon the two find that there are worse things than loving someone you shouldn't. For Calum and Kate, even love and the fiery power of stars may not be enough to break a curse as dark as the blood that binds their destiny. Sometimes being brave just means falling in love. Sounds freaking awesome right? Well it is! I've read it and can completely vouch for how amazing it is! Wanna sneak peek? Here you go!             "First, the sound hit me; water crashing so angrily it screamed. The sound was a hundred waterfalls falling at once. It must have been. It was nothing and everything, so loud it became quiet in an instant, shattering into something so beautiful I thought maybe I was actually dead.            But I breathed deeply-            and I was so, so alive.            I wrinkled my nose against the humidity and the cold breeze that cut through it. I closed my eyes for just a second, and gulped in the raw, clean air. It was sweet and frigid, filling my lungs with so much life they felt as icy as death inside me. This air reminded me of rain, of the way it fell from the tops of the Rocky Mountains down to towns below in sheets and storms.             Of rain so alive it killed.            When I opened my eyes I felt the breath I'd taken live and die on an exhale.             The cave was enormous, lit by a thousand tiny lanterns and filled with hundreds of people as if an entire city had been hidden in this hollow mountain. Jagged stone walls rose up toward a ceiling that wasn't there, trapping the place in an angry cage of gray. Everything, including the floor, seemed to be made of stone. Four fast moving waterfalls, shimmering green and blue and white, ran quickly down the high walls as if pretending to be the four points of a compass. They jumped over misplaced stones and onto the tops of buildings and houses, draping them in curtains of blue-green water, frothing white where they hit gray, and flowed gently into a rapid river that circled the edge of the cave. The river must have drained out somewhere, but there was no end in sight. There was only water and stone, the two mixing together, one.            Amidst the water and stone were people, all dressed in the same black pants but different colored shirts: Blue, red, green, yellow, white, and gray. Each person had determination in their eyes, the same burning purpose I saw in Kate. They moved with grace, and the ones in gray ran like birds against the river. None of them seemed to have realized we had stepped out of the mist and through the stone as if it were nothing.             As if everything was normal.            Tiny flecks of what looked like mirrored snowflakes floated through the air like fragmented thoughts from a thousand angels. Each fleck shone a rainbow of whites, not colors, reflecting everything and nothing at all; it was as if they were made of pure light, white as the center of the sun.            And then belief hit me: Lake Iris.            It had to be.            The lake stretched wide, resting in the very center of the cave. It was a vast black thing, still as death and as placid as if ice had formed on top. The lake, so still and dark with the swirling white flakes reflecting off its surface, became the night and the stars.            "We have to hurry." Kate's voice brought me back to reality. "Let's go. Move. Now!" She pulled me forward and, without meaning to, I found myself falling into her, touching her, holding her, and it was like the first time all over again.            "Sorry," I mumbled. I pushed away and blinked and the moment was just a lost memory I wanted to remember but didn't know why.            Kate backed up slowly, her eyes wide, turned-            and ran.            I was left behind, broken and alone.            I wondered if that's how it always would be.            Desperate, needing, wanting: I ran as fast as I could to catch up to Kate. My legs moved under me as if I was a magnet and so was she.             I screamed, "Kate!" but it was nothing more than a lost breath; as I ran my voice flew behind me. "Wait!"            She stopped.            Then, opposite to opposite, we stood in front of each other, unable to move closer.            I asked, "What were those words you said back there?"             "Just words," she said. "But words have power when they have purpose. Basically, it was a passcode to get through the wards that protect this place."            "What does it mean?"            "Praecipio vim virtutum luce. Sum fortitudine. Ego sum lux. Hac virtute lucis intus, aperta ianua mando secretum," she repeated. "I was told it means 'I command the power of virtue, of light. I am strength. I am light. With this power of light inside me, I command this secret door to open.'"            "Can anyone say the words?"            "Sure," a voice like thunder said behind me. "But not everyone can use their magic."            A boy stepped beside me, and I felt my breath catch. With his thick arms crossed over his gray shirt, and eyes popping green against his dark skin, he made me think of Tyler.            "What do you want, Zack?" Kate asked, leaning back on one foot.            He smiled and rolled on the heels of his feet. "Nothing. Just wanted to see who you had with you and why you're sharing our secrets with him. Who is he?"            "He's no one."            Zack raised an eyebrow. "Is this him?"            "Go away, Zack."            "What if I don't want to?"            Kate stepped closer to him. "Then I'll make you leave. You don't think I could?"            Zack just grinned and ran a hand over his dark, short hair. "Oh, I know you could. I'm not stupid."            I could see Kate almost smile. "No, you're not. An idiot, maybe, but not stupid."            "You gonna show him around?" Zack asked, looking me up and down. The veins in his neck burst with every movement.            "No," she said. "I have orders."            Zack's eyes went wide, and his dusky skin blotched with pale light. "Oh, sorry. Go. Didn't mean to keep you."            Kate nodded, her eyes almost sad. "Talk to you later."            Zack turned to leave, and Kate grabbed my arm to pull.            "Wait!" I called to Zack. "Hold on."            Slowly, he turned around to face me. His eyes were bright, shining with a quiet sadness that reflected the light in the cave. "What?"            "Who do you think I am?" I asked, and held my breath.            Zack's eyes turned to Kate, and then slowly back to me.            "I think," he said, "that you're someone who has no idea what's about to happen to him, and that makes you afraid of what's to come."            My voice caught in my throat. "Do you know what's going to happen?"            His smile was sad. "That's the problem, isn't it? No one does."             And then, "We need to go. Now!" Kate backed away from me, and then turned to run. Her eyes were wide, darting left and right as if she were scared of someone I couldn't see.  She snapped, "Move, Calum! Why are you so slow? Follow me. Let's go!"I ran as fast as I could to catch up to Kate, and as soon as I was close enough to feel the brush of her long hair blowing back against my face, I slowed enough to pretend I was standing still.            I couldn't fool myself, though.             My heart, beating faster than I ran, gave me away.            All around us the men and woman gave us curious looks as we passed, though I had a feeling their eyes only saw me. The stranger. The one that didn't belong. The ones in gray shirts looked especially angry, their eyes slanted down, lips curled in my direction. I could feel sweat dripping down my face already, while everyone else seemed to move so gracefully swift like Kate.            I saw a woman in red, her hair like embers burning, touch her hand to a cold lantern and light the flame with a snap of her fingers.            Closer now, I could see that their skin seemed iridescent, the same glow I had noticed in Kate that first day, almost lit from the inside out.             I wanted to ask about it, but I couldn't find my breath.            Part of me felt I might be dreaming.             The other part of me knew I wasn't.  *claps* Pretty amazing, huh? Now are you ready for this week's giveaway?! Okay good! FOURdays to wish life would end so you can take matters into your own hands. FIVE days to be saved. It takes a week to realize that everything each and every one of those days has in common, is the vibrant blue eyes that are staring at me right now.

Sounds pretty amazing, huh? I know I can't wait to read it!!! Let's take a sneak peek into what's in store for us inside the pages of Deviation.

His hand slides down my arm to rest on my hip as his other slides to the back of my neck and knots in my hair.  My mind is telling me to push back, to move, but my heart is telling me to stay. I stand there as his face inches closer and his lips meet mine in a slow kiss. The moment his lips meet mine everything disappears, everything. My hands move up to hook around his neck and I pull him closer to me. It’s a slow kiss, a kiss that means more than it should, than it possibly could, right? His hand has moved to my lower back pulling me toward him and I moan at the contact. He bites my bottom lip then soothes the bite with a swipe of his tongue causing me to open my mouth. He angles his head, deepening the kiss as our tongues dance around each other. The kiss is becoming needier as we stay locked together. His hand is now under my shirt, caressing my back, sending goose bumps all over my body. Just when I’m about to move my hand to his shirt to pull it off he breaks the kiss. With the both of us breathing heavy he rests his head against mine, eyes closed, and arms around me.

Ahhh! So, you I know you are thinking I HAVE to get my hands on this book ASAP! Well you're in luck! I just so happen to have the links! ;)

I had the great pleasure to sit down with THEE David James and interrogate...I mean interview him. Check it!

MN: What made you decide to take the self-publishing leap?
DJ:   In my mind, there isn’t much that differs from traditional publishing and self if you do either correctly. Editors, designers, and agents are a significant part of both worlds. The reason I decided to self publish was because of timing. It was the right time for me to publish Light of the Moon.

MN: I’m pretty sure that’s the best answer ever! I completely agree! So, David, what inspires you?
DJ:    I’m inspired by books and movies and life. I find that if I’m not reading, I’m not writing. I generally read a book every other day, and that keeps my words flowing. I also can’t write when it’s completely silent, so I have to have some kind of sound in the background. I know that a lot of writers work to music, but I prefer to write with a movie playing in the background. I don’t know why!

MN: What is the last book you read?
DJ:   I’m currently reading Proxy by Alex London and loving the futuristic tale.

MN: Name your favorite 2013 moment/memory so far?
DJ:   Probably the release of Shades of the Stars, the companion anthology to Light of the Moon. Shades of the Stars is a huge release for me, and I love all the stories included in it. Seeing it finally alive was amazing.

MN: What's next for David James?
DJ:    The sequel to Light of the Moon, Shadow of the Sun, will be released in late 2013, and I have a few projects I’m developing in the meantime. I can’t reveal any titles or ideas just yet, but I am staying in the young adult realm.

MN: Being mysterious, I see. ;) You know how to keep us anxiously waiting. Are you planning on making any appearances/attending any events in the near future?
DJ:    Of course! I don’t know any specific dates yet, but I update my blog with events as they happen. I love interacting with readers, so I hope to attend more events in the future.

MN: *Mental Note: Stalk blog daily* Name a fictional character you’d like to have as a real life bestie?
DJ:    I would love to be friends with every single person in the cast of Harry Potter. Especially Hermione. I think she is incredibly strong and loyal and I bet she could talk for hours about good books she’s read.

MN: Nice choice! What is your most prized possession?
DJ:    Probably my books, honestly. I love to escape to new worlds, and I have too many books to name.

MN: Time for the speed round…respond with the first thing that comes to mind:
Color? Blue or green.
Song? “Dreams” by Van Halen
Food? Pizza
Place? Lake
Book? Shiver
Season? Fall
Holiday? Christmas
Animal? Dog

I just want to say major THANKS to David for that amazing interview! Now, here's this week giveaway and all the details on how to enter! Don't worry--it just involves Sharing the Love . Psst! If you answer each week's bonus trivia question correctly it will earn you an extra entry for the SUPER MEGA AWESOME GRAND PRIZE! You don't want to miss out--I promise you that!
