Once I’ve done that the story begins to reveal itself. It’s a scary, fragile feeling, but if I trust my muse (or whatever force guides the novel) I find it almost tells itself. If I skip a day writing, I’m nagged by guilt. The more regularly I work on a piece the more it flows. When I was younger I thought inspiration was like the apple beaning Sir Issac Newton and while that’s occasionally true, it’s more often, incredibly hard work. It wasn’t always that way though. In my 20’s and 30’s I was consumed by a fever pitch of partying, travelling and attaining experience. Somewhere in my mid-30’s I crashed. Several traumatic things happened in my life at once that made realize there wouldn’t always be time to tell the stories I wanted. I began writing obsessively. A couple of years after that I started working on my current series, “Nightfall Gardens,” for my daughter and godson. There’s nothing surer to light a fire under you than staring at your own mortality. (less)
