I'd hop in my car and drive to Green Town, Illinois, the fictional town of Ray Bradbury's Dandelion Wine. It is a place that reminds me of my youth, of a simpler time, where kids run free in green spaces that span for miles in a place where families gather to relish in the magic and majesty of a small rural town.

I've read Dandelion Wine many times. I'm drawn to the book often, for I need to escape this life and all its distractions in search of the meaningful, to put on my cherished gym shoes and run through the ravines and streets with my brother, from sun up until the street lights go on, kicking up the newly cut blades of grass, running until breathless, exploring the wonders of each new day and hoping to see the fire balloons rise again in the summer evening sky.

It seems I long for the past.(less)

If the words aren’t flowing on one project, I shift over to another one. Minimally, I'm always publicizing the last book (which requires a lot of writing for marketing and publicity), working on the current book, and planning and sketching out the next one (or two). Along with that, I set a goal to write two new poems each month and I try to be fairly regimented in my approach to writing in my journal. Writing in my journal provides me a great opportunity to write out, in long hand, whatever is racing around in my head at the time, which often leads to another story idea or writing project.(less)

More books by Dan Burns…

Writing notes on napkins, in a sense, is such an ancient cliché, but when you're by yourself having a drink in a bar, it beats the alternatives, which are gazing endlessly—like a self-absorbed dope succumbing to mind-numbing consequences—into the idiot-slab (iPhone), or making conversation with someone I meet, which I may enjoy, but then again, sometimes it's just better to write than speak. An...

"Thank you Goodreads and Dan Burns for the win! The book was a fast and fascinating read. All the elements for a great read are here; a cold murder case, a powerful political family, and a wealthy philanthropist. This is the first book in the Sebas..." Read more of this review »
