I’m Pat Flynn, a regular thirty-three-year-old guy from San Diego, California who makes a living on the Internet. I haven’t won the lottery, and I don’t drive a fancy car. What I do have is a beautiful wife, two amazing children, a loving family, awesome friends, and a line of work that allows me to spend most of my time with them. I consider myself the luckiest person on earth. Here’s why.

I lost my beloved job as an architect in 2008 when the U.S. economy crumbled. Scared and confused, I turned to the Internet for a possible new career path. Why the Internet? Because before being let go, I had started a blog about the LEED exam, a new and acclaimed certification within the industry encouraging sustainable, environmentally friendly architecture designs. The blog’s purpose was to organize my study notes. Apparently other architects were passionate about the LEED certification too because, unknowingly at first, my blog became quite popular. Presto! My first online business was born.

In the months and years that followed, I learned all about being an online entrepreneur and making money online. I started the Smart Passive Income blog and podcast as a way to help teach and inspire others who crave the same freedoms I have come to enjoy. Those platforms have enabled me to meet amazing people and do the work I love—helping other passionate entrepreneurs build and grow successful online businesses. My success still boggles my mind; I still can’t believe all that’s happened since being let go. It turns out that getting laid off was the best thing that ever happened to me.

Today, I have the amazing honor and pleasure to reach hundreds of thousands of people each month via my blog and podcasts. I take this responsibility as seriously as I do my family commitments because I believe people need authentic examples in their lives to help them find their way.
