But for personal projects, like novels, I giv…moreDeadlines are an awesome cure for writer's block. At the newspaper where I work, I'm always on deadline. But for personal projects, like novels, I give myself a deadline. Not an arbitrary, imaginary deadline, because I'd know it was made-up and ignore it. Instead I find a contest I want to enter, a lit mag with a reading period that's closing soon, or a conference with an agent I want to pitch to, and work to meet that deadline. On days when I really feel stumped, I go back and revise. And I don't write every day. I take weekends off. It's good to lay fallow sometimes.(less)
