Upset at the fact that we never
know, not really,
who is thinking of us as they are
thinking of us, this space
of ignorance, this unspoken
bond.
Are you alone there,
where you think of me,
did you rise early this day,
was it joy that I tasted like,
was it ache?
What of alarm,
what of a gentle nudge
like a shoulder tap, like a
whisper in the ear only audible
to these ears,
“Right now,” in hushed tone,
“you, you, it’s still you,”
breathy and soft,
each time you took up room
in their thoughts.
What of color, what if the world
changed hue, subtly, when
all daydreams bubbling up
like fizz in the imagination
of another were filled with
your face?
A soft grey haze,
and I will know that somewhere,
you and I are dancing
in your dreams.

What if we had a house of ghosts,
hands on doorframes
in the corners of our eyes,
what if we were haunted
by love that was loved within
those walls?
Would you see them, would you
speak as though they wore
flesh, would you invite them
in? Here a man who watched
his lover pass, here the
lover, thinner in light for the time
she waited;
would the creaking floorboards
startle, or would they soothe,
would they sing
we too were here once, we too
loved as you love?
Stay, I would say, we will stay
until we haunt the spaces we called
home.
Put your hand through me,
where my heart once beat,
stand beside the window
and vanish
as the sun makes us
invisible.

Promises made and kept,
good leather tied
to tree branch,
a decade could not
erode it.
Windswept and fragile,
some, but I’ve never
made this kind,
never will.
If I offer it, it is stone,
it is foundation,
it is steel against
the shaking.
I promised us,
years before you saw
the hope of it,
kept it, finally,
then broke the
branch.
