You ran into the birds,
hair streaming behind you
like ribbons, like playthings
of the wind.

Flock rose like confetti
inhaled by cloud
and storm,
all I heard was
wing song
and cry.

You turned,
half silhouette
shining in sunset,

your face was
alive
with laughter
and tears.

We become the regrets,
transform into the undone,
clothe ourselves
in the soft colors
of should have.  
One day you will hear
knocking
from phantom hands
on open doors,
you will stand, rise
to greet,
and find the front porch
empty.  

Nothing stops
this pounding, no
shutting off of the light,
no slamming
of the door,
no angry shouts from
the top steps.

Do, and do now,
say it, even with
quivering throat.

Call it prevention
from the ghosts
that will come,
call it
exorcism.

naked
3 am light covering
