Kevin Lankes is the author of Metastatic Memories, a memoir detailing his journey through cancer at the age of 25, as well as the short story collection, Astral Imperium And Other Stories. He's been featured by the American Academy of Dermatology, and the Cancer Research Institute, attending their 60th annual awards gala as a showcased survivor last fall. A Pennsylvania native, he is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, where he received a degree in East Asian Studies, and the ability to almost speak Japanese. These days, he lives in New York City, where he works as a freelance writer and blogger. Moving on After Cancer

It's been over three years since I was diagnosed with stage 3 melanoma.  I'd like to think that since a lot of time has removed me from the event that things have settled back into some semblance of normalcy.  Of course, as anyone knows who's been through a traumatic experience, that isn't even remotely true.
I've tried very hard to distance myself from cancer.  But it's never far from m... Read more of this blog post »

“Because really, what do you have to lose? Your life? That's no big deal, I promise you. When you find out you might die, you're finally allowed to live like you never have before. If you lose your life while living the shit out of it, then you've done the best you could, and you shouldn't worry about death. When you're dead, you can't screw up. But while you're here, all you have are a few things to call your own. You have your integrity, your family, and your hope for the future. These are important and you should keep them somewhere safe where you'll remember them.”
Kevin Lankes

“I've learned so much during my time with cancer. It's taught me a lot about who I am. It revealed to me my true goals and priorities. It introduced me to a brand new world where time isn't wasted, and important things aren't left unsaid. All the while, the superfluities of life are ignored and forgotten. Because I now understand how a person should act, whether confronted by death or not. And it's a shame that's what it takes to scare someone into becoming a conducive, meritable human being.”
Kevin Lankes

“When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this - you haven't.”
Thomas Edison

“An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.”
Oscar Wilde

“Do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise; seek what they sought.”
Matsuo Basho

“Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
Alfred Lord Tennyson, Idylls of the King and a Selection of Poems

“A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.”
John A. Shedd
