Little girls don’t typically grow up with dreams of being a killer for hire. But after being orphaned early on, enlisting in the Marines at eighteen seemed like a good fit. Then something goes terribly wrong, changing the whole trajectory of her life. No longer in the military, she is recruited to the CIA then trained to be one of the most skilled assassins in the agency. But as with all situations where one knows too much, the very skills she was trained for became the very ones she’s framed for.

Left on her own, she lives off grid, doing what she must to survive. That is until the ghosts from her past resurface, causing her to come out of hiding to clear her name, and claim her life, once and for all.

McCaulsky is a prolific and versatile writer whose vivid imagination comes up with some of the most memorable stories and characters. The kind that stay with you after the story is over. One of his greatest writing strengths is his ability to tap into the heart and thoughts of the women characters he creates, giving his readers a rare glimpse into a writer who truly understands the opposite sex. It would be very easy to assume that the author is female because of the authenticity of his female characters. Yet his very dominant male presence is also clearly at work. This is a well-researched book that left this reader sitting on the edge of her seat, with heart racing, wanting to know what happens next. The scenes played like a movie on the big screen. Although this is a crime fiction novel, McCaulsky didn’t leave out the tender, sweet moments women readers long for, while fully embracing the diehard ruggedness expected of the genre. I hated to see this book come to an end. Will there be a sequel? One can only hope.

Promise is a beautiful young woman who is caught up in a life of hell. A prime example of what happens to fatherless daughters, when the older Ameechie steps to her expressing his interest she feels she has struck gold. Before too long she was caught up deep in his web of deception…and worse. Like any woman, Promise just wants to be loved and cherished for the amazing human being that she is. Instead, she is immersed in the psychosis and neurotic behavior of someone else’s issues. Hoping that changing herself or toeing the line will make her situation better, she continues to play the fool to the one who claims to love her, but who is more her enemy than anyone else who has ever been in her life.

Ameechie is for all intents and purposes a bum. Oh sure, he works and has a hustle on the side, but that does nothing to change that who he is internally is not worth the time it would take to write about it. What he does have going for himself is an ability to attract women who love him to the core of their beings, even though he has nothing of worth or value to pour back into them.

Deciding she’s had enough, Promise, puts a plan in place to extract her from the hell of this situation. But will the changes come soon enough to give her the freedom she longs for or is her decision too late, leaving her stuck in a life of hell?

Coco Amoure has penned an extremely relatable story of what happens when good girls end up with bad boys. These are characters who could very easily be people that we know in real life. This story is thick with emotion, yet doesn’t wreak with despair. There is hope for the reader that things will change for the better in the lives of these characters, just as a reader would want the situations to change in a positive direction for any person living through this ordeal. As a side note, I love the character’s names in the series. I have a deep appreciate for the well roundedness of this story, that even though it’s tackling some heavy subjects, there is still humor and beauty within its context. Good job!

Although cute, with her petite frame and Nordic-looking features, her eccentricities causes everything else about her to pale in comparison. She’s the one no one, not even her family, understands. She’s never invited to parties. She has no social life, no friends, and no potential suitors….and that’s perfectly okay with her.

Bordering on genius, Anna is perfectly content to live in her tidy, structured world, coding and organizing. In her life everything makes perfect sense. It works wonderfully for her. What’s the problem with everyone else?

Matt is a closet nerd, but his good looks and easygoing personality make it easy to miss that. He is the guy next door, All American, athletic type that women fall over themselves trying to impress. Crazy In Love is a whimsical tale of two unlikely souls who meet and are drawn together despite their obvious differences. In an industry where all book boyfriends are alpha males, bad boys, or nearly perfect, it was refreshing to read about two people who were so far from perfect they could easily be the guy and girl next door in real life. Although dealing with serious issues, Costa kept the story lightweight and comical as these two people navigate their internal issues, their external environments, and their eternal heart’s cry to find love. This is such a wonderful and sweet reminder that every person is the perfect cup of tea for someone else and that humans can feel okay in their frailties, not seek perfection, and it’s perfectly and wonderfully okay. Even our imperfections are perfect and serve a purpose.

In The Journey of Ruthie Belle, Imani Wisdom has written a beautiful, emotionally charged story that grabs a reader’s attention from the very first line. She delves into taboo and often sensitive topics with no fear of reprisal. The novel started off with the feel of being written in a literary fiction genre, but as it progressed it seemed to take on a thriller/suspense feel. Her characters are well developed and the plot makes a reader want to know how it all turns out in the end. There were many twists and turns to the story. This is the kind of book that makes a reader pause to reflect on one’s own life, while also drawing deep emotional reactions to the characters and situations presented. In this story, things are not as they seem, but that is a part of the charm. Although well-written and wonderfully executed, the story could use a good proofread.
