The Penngrove Ponderosa

I am putting the last touches on another book. I actually wrote it back in 2009, but it needed a lot of work. I have learned a lot about writing since then. So I'm about finished with a total rewrite. The name of the story is THE PENNGROVE PONDEROSA: Surviving the 1970's Theory of Evolution: Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll at Sonoma State University, California.

The Long Hard Trail

Since the Travon Martin trial, every pundit on the left and right are all experts on prejudice. We have come a long way in this country and the world to get along better with people of different backgrounds. Still discrimination rears its ugly head relentlessly.
Growing up in the shadow of WWII,the concept that a "civilized country" could murder 6-10 million people just because they were Jews, Gypsies or homosexual is still hard to believe.Today secular fighting continues throughout the planet. I've seen the hostility first hand growing up in New York and as a teacher.I've heard all the profane words constantly: Kike, nigger, pollock, mick, slant eyes, white trash, faggot. Need I go on? My point is the harshness, cruelty and hostility is not confined to one group or a certain race. It lives deep inside of all of us. We must fight it every day.

It all seems overwhelming. In the face of this awesome problem, what can we do?

I recently read Cheryl Strayed's book "Wild." She hikes and challenges the grandeur of the Pacific crest trail. It reminded me of the summer of 1973 when I backpacked the western mountains with names like the High Sierra,Desolation Wilderness, Olympic Rain Forest, Upper Cascades, etcetera. I still remember that first climb up four thousand feet into Vantana Wilderness. With a fifty pound pack strapped to my back, I wondered like the author of the book, how am I ever going to get over these mountains? We came to the same conclusion, one step at a time.
