Famous author Rejections: Why You Should Never Give Up (Infographic)

If you’re a writer, persistence pays…here’s proof. Thanks for a great post, Kiara Halligan!

Nicholas C. Rossis

This is a guest post by the very talented Kiara Halligan, who created the Infographic for GalaxyEssay. I have often written about the subject of author rejections, and this infographic is a great way to show why you should never give up!

Famous author Rejections: Why You Should Never Give Up

A publisher once wrote a rejection letter that simply said ‘It’s badly written’. For the author, it would have spelled doom if he was not persistent. Those three little words said that he had no talent and that he just spends well over a year working hard on something that no one is interested in. Those three little words were soul-crushing.

Or they would be if the author hadn’t persisted. A couple of months later, ‘The Da Vinci Code’ was picked up by a publisher and Dan Brown became one of the…

Elizabeth Goudge on what to read in times of trouble QUOTES FOR WRITERS (and readers)

When my mind is troubled, I know what to do – several things in fact, but one sure way is to pick up a book that inspires me and leads me back to the truth of who I AM. I read voraciously and find many authors fascinating and skilled, but very few books leave me with the feeling that I have grown as a result of diving in…which is why I try to make my own novels rich in inner meaning…and many tell me that they re-read my work, several times – and I can’t tell you how happy that makes me, because THAT’S the reason I write…

BRIDGET WHELAN writer

troubled manIn times of storm and tempest, of indecision and desolation, a book already known and loved makes better reading than something new and untried … nothing is so warming and companionable.

My Truth not The Truth

Such a critical distinction made beautifully here…every single one of us holds some truths dear, but to believe they are The Truth and not Our Truth or My Truth is the beginning of madness and alienation from all others who have an equal right to their point of view. Thank you, Alexis Rose, I resonate strongly with what you write.

Guest Post:

My truth not The truth! A matter of semantics? Maybe?

I’m presenting at a trauma conference next Saturday and finishing up the final touches of my presentation. I’m going to be talking about healing with courage and resilience in the face of PTSD. I will speak about my path to accepting the truth, the effects of my trauma, how I’m learning to live with my symptoms and my healing process.  I hope to convey to others, to remember and notice those perfect moments in each day (especially the really trying days), celebrate each step towards health and to understand Its a long and never linear process.

As I have been writing and practicing my talk, I noticed something that I had never been able to verbalize before. Really, I’m not sure it was even in my consciousness until now. I speak about how my long repressed memories were…

The Day We Killed Jesus

The Day We Killed Jesus…poignant…something all parents in particular (I feel) should watch out for and try to circumvent tragedy – especially when their kids have a bullying streak, or are the kind other kids bully.

A child has no way to sift through the bs that is flung at them….and without the wisdom that comes from knowing more about our often sick world, precious young lives are extinguished. Thank you, Opinionated Man – yes, all too often we kill Jesus, albeit ignorantly.

As I grow older I sometimes catch myself lost in reflection upon specific times of my life. Usually when this happens it is a pain point I am revisiting as I ponder a decision or lack thereof I have made during situations in my past.

His name was Josiah. We laughingly called him Messiah because that is funny right? Well it was to a bunch of teens and we were on the younger end of that category. Much of what occurred was bullying, but it was done in the innocently, vicious way that only teens know how to do. We teased and mocked this kid that we only met on church retreats when our churches would come together on some mountain… hill, or in the middle of a bunch of trees and camp. We slept in cabins, discussed the scripture, and were supposed to find comradery during these times.

When I…

Powerful Writing Techniques

Brilliant post on how to write with such passionate conviction that your reader is sucked into a blissful vortex….I read so many books that don’t leave me with anything, sorry to say. In the end, for me at least, its not just glossy technique, but my engagement with the characters that matters….and most of all, since I write Spiritual Fiction, to me it is critical that my reader is enriched by the time s/he gets to the end of the book…as well as inspired to carry on, hopefully imbued by the wisdom of the east that I saturate my work with. Thank you so much for this, Michelle Goodhew, and Chris Graham, who led me to it.

Take a moment, close your eyes, and recall a story that truly engaged you as a reader – one whose world and characters became completely real for you. Got one?

Now, take off your reader hat and don your analytical writer hat to think about what makes that story so captivating. What writing techniques did the author use to bring the story to life? Was it the wrenching appeal to your emotions, the vivid and brutal action scenes, or the high stakes facing a character? Mastering these and other storytelling methods is the key to writing your own engaging tale.

Just as a lion is the product of all the zebras it has eaten, a writer is the product of all the books he or she has read. Reading the works of skilled writers is a fabulous way to hone your craft and learn how to effectively…
