The theme connecting the stories in the collection is London and all of the stories are set there.

While all the stories are fictional, they draw heavily on my own experience of growing up and living as a young adult in various parts of London. The stories are about very different people at very different stages of their lives. There's the young woman keen to meet Mr Right, and a young man from Edinburgh who goes to unusual lengths to make friends in his neighbourhood. There's also the divorcee who decides to "date" London as part of her healing process and the very old man who discovers what all of the London Underground's abandoned stations are now used for...

On Writing: What Are The Different Types of Editors?

Today we have a guest post for you by a freelance book editor. While I have written extensively about writing on this blog, I haven't specifically written much about editing, and I certainly haven't explained the different types of editors that can help you make your book - non-fiction or fiction - the best it can be.

As an indie author it's imperative to me to produce and publi

Kazuo Ishiguro shared a note from
Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
I’d made two previous attempts back in the early 1990s to write the novel that became NEVER LET ME GO. It was then called ‘The Students Novel’. Both times I felt there was a key piece missing to the jigsaw, a piece whose shape and color I couldn’t determine, and I’d moved on to work on a different book. The story eluding me, I knew, would feature ‘students’ who lived in wrecked farmhouses in the rainy English countryside. (But there’d be no sign of a college near them.) They’d be a segregated group whose lives had become strangely shortened. I couldn’t progress beyond that. I couldn’t work ...more
