Michael Gallagher is the author of two series of novels set in Victorian times. Send for Octavius Guy chronicles the attempts of fourteen-year-old Gooseberry—reformed master pickpocket—to become a detective, aided and abetted by his ragtag bunch of friends. The Involuntary Medium follows the fortunes of young Lizzie Blaylock, a girl who can materialize the spirits of the dead, as she strives to come to terms with her unique gift.
For twenty-five years Michael taught adults with learning disabilities at Bede, a London-based charity that works with the local community. He now writes full time. It was semi-circular in shape, made from coconut fibres, neither very new nor very old, slightly worn, but only slightly. I was shocked: inside my apartment everything seemed familiar; outside, everything appeared to have changed. I live in a tower block, and my immediate thought was that this was the handiwork of my neighbour’s two children. I left it where it was, expecting its rightful owner to come and retrieve it; it was, after all, quite distinctive in its own way. Days passed—weeks—and still it sat there unclaimed. I eventually came up with a theory: some kind person who’d moved out of the block, having no further use for it, had found it a new home. In the dead of night. As silent as a thief. Of course that was the explanation. What else could it be? #MysteryWeek(less)

Twenty years ago I hurt my back very badly and knew I could no longer teach full time. While I was lying there unable to move (and more than a bit feverish from the pain), I started thinking about what I might do instead. "I know," I foolishly thought, "I'll write a book!"(less)

April 2020: Lock down! Why not give away books?

Author Michael Gallagher Two weeks ago I received an email from Smashwords, the smaller of the two book distributors I use. They were launching a sale called Authors Give Back in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, which aimed to help readers in lock down.

“THIS IS NO ORDINARY SALE: Readers everywhere are going through great difficulty. There’s the difficulty of social isolation as readers shelter in place at home. Ther Read more of this blog post »
