Dear Church Planter,
I’m so excited for you! You are about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime!
Before you set sail, here are 6 things you must know:
Be more passionate about developing a theological vision of why the church plant you serve exists rather than creating a “cool” Sunday morning worship experience.
Teamwork makes the dream work. Surround yourself with people who are smarter and more gifted than you. Pray them onto the team.
Risk and faith are two sides of the same coin. Great accomplishments for the Kingdom of God are preceded by epic acts of risk and faith.
Be organized. Spend time developing systems and processes that will carry forth the theological vision of the church plant in the lives of the people.
Your MARRIAGE and FAMILY is your most important ministry!
Love Jesus above ALL because He first loved you. Love Jesus more than attendance records, more than the number of baptisms, more than people telling you how awesome your sermon is. Jesus must be your ultimate joy, because everything else in life is inconsistent. Jesus is the only constant. At His right hand is joy.

Toxic Emotions
When I was about three, I spent the night at my father’s house in the Lincoln Heights Courts housing projects on the west side of San Antonio. I remember being abruptly awakened from my sleep. My father’s dad had come home drunk. I can still recall the curse words that flew out of my grandfather’s mouth like weapons. He cussed everyone out and threatened to kick us out of the house he “paid the bills for.”
My father gently talked to his drunken, anger-filled father and restrained him. This was not the first time my dad had had to do this.
I do not know the backstory of why my grandfather was doing what he was doing, but I can now see that my dad had his own share of daddy wounds. He was a spiritual orphan too. During a conversation with my dad in August 2012, I asked him, “What was your relationship with your father like?”
He said, “My father worked all day and drank cheap wine all night. In a drunken rage he would then try to beat my mom. As I got older, I learned to calm him down and stop him. I never thought about hurting him because he was my father, and I loved him.”
People live out of either the hurt they feel or the healing Jesus provides. Your parents will never be perfect. And you will never be a perfect parent. But there is a perfect God who, over time, will bring healing to hurtful circumstances.
I spent years being angry and bitter toward my father. These toxic emotions only limited my life. Do not let anger and bitterness limit you too. Our Papa in heaven is the only One who can provide us with the love and, ultimately, the identity we have been created for—a child of God.

Why I Started Crying When I Saw the Final Cover Design of My Book Limitless Life
As I sat at my desk marinating, after another crushing defeat at the hands of twelve year-old son Jeremiah in NBA 2K 13, my friend Chad Cannon made me cry.
Here’s how.
Chad is the head marking guru at Thomas Nelson. He sent me this twit:
“Look at what came today @DerwinLGray? It’s way better than a Galaxy S4. #limitlesslife”
What’s better than the Galaxy S4?
Chad, in “Chad Fashion,” had sent me a picture of the final cover design of my new book, Limitless Life: You Are More Than Your Past When God Holds Your Future (Release date September 3, 2013).
And then I started to cry.
Chad quickly texted me, “When I was walking by a desk I saw a book with a yellow spine and I was drawn to it more than any other book. It’s sick!”
I texted him back, “Bro, this is crazy. I own very few yellow things, but yellow is my favorite color because my father bought me a yellow bike for my 6th birthday before he left me.”
I’m not sure what this means. But when I saw that yellow spine on Limitless Life, I felt my heart being healed at an even deeper level. And I sense that Jesus is going to heal a lot of hearts through Limitless Life too.
