E.L. Bates is a writer of fantasy and adventure, usually (though not always) historical in nature.

When not writing, she enjoys reading, knitting, ice dancing, and spending time with her husband and two children. She is usually seen with a cup of tea in hand, and keeps a stash of dark chocolate hidden in her desk for emergency inspiration.

Perhaps as a result of reading and writing so many adventures, she can't help but feel that life is best lived with a sense of anticipation, seeking adventure around every corner, looking for the magic that still lurks in the hidden places of the world, waiting for those with the eyes to see it.

I usually have two (or more, which is a really bad idea for me) projects going on at the same time, so if I get stuck on one, I switch over to the other. If I only have one project on tap at the moment, I'll try journaling, or write a short piece for my own amusement, or something else that is still writing, but unrelated to my current WIP. It doesn't work for everyone, but that usually helps me.(less)

Then I'm also working on a middle grade historical novel, and also a space opera. The space opera is my first venture into sci-fi, and I'm super excited about it.(less)

Happy (Belated) Birthday to the Queen of Crime

Yesterday was Agatha Christie’s 130th birthday. I wanted to write a tribute to her, but I was already late for the Self-Published Fantasy book recommendation post, and I didn’t want to push it back yet again. So I’m writing my tribute today!

When it comes to fiction authors, there are two who top my personal list for “writing stories that shaped me.” Not necessarily stories that I love the best, th

More of E.L.'s books…
“Though I do admire many of her ideals, I'm afraid they are all terribly impractical for real life.”
E.L. Bates, Magic Most Deadly

“Anything in your training tell you how to write to a young lady you've barely met, who witnessed a murder with you, when you want to convince her to not tell the police you both witnessed said murder?" Len asked, as much to distract Becket from the paper as for any hope his valet might be helpful.

"I don't believe that particular scenario is covered in any etiquette book I've ever seen, sir," Becket said.”
E.L. Bates, Magic Most Deadly

“Besides, Mr Davies obviously needed someone around with sense. He didn't have any himself.”
E.L. Bates, Magic Most Deadly

“Do you find it easy to get drunk on words?"

"So easy that, to tell you the truth, I am seldom perfectly sober.”
Dorothy L. Sayers, Gaudy Night

“If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.”
Albert Einstein

“Still, it doesn't do to murder people, no matter how offensive they may be.”
Dorothy L. Sayers, Five Red Herrings

“I'd like to add some beauty to life," said Anne dreamily. "I don't exactly want to make people KNOW more... though I know that IS the noblest ambition... but I'd love to make them have a pleasanter time because of me... to have some little joy or happy thought that would never have existed if I hadn't been born.”
L.M. Montgomery, Anne's House of Dreams

“I shall live badly if I do not write, and I shall write badly if I do not live.”
Francoise Sagan
