About this author

In addition to being Co-Founder of Creative Thunder (http://CreativeThunder.co), Sean M. Madden is an American writer, educator and photographer who has lived in the South East of England since 2005. However, in May 2012, he and his partner Mufidah Kassalias embarked upon a slow traveling tour of Europe which continues with no end in sight.

This past summer (2013), they traveled around the UK as part of their Spring/Summer 2013 British Isles Writing Workshop Tour. This brought them through France and the South East of England, to St Albans, to the Lake District, and then Scotland and, eventually, North Cornwall.

They’re still slow traveling, presently living in South West France, and are fully ensconced in their new venture, Creative Thunder,...more

Sean Madden Is This Failure?

While house- and pet-sitting in a tucked-away place in the Lake District, I’ve been reading a collection of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s letters, and it, coupled with our slow-traveling situation, has had me thinking about failure — what it is, whether I’ve found it, or whether, in fact, it’s something which one achieves only when one has succumbed to it. In other words, is it possible that failure cannot be put upon a person but is, rather, a garment with which one can only clothe one’s self?

At the very time of writing this post I should be leading a writing workshop in Lancaster, just outside the Lake District, in Lancashire.

Sean Madden Hello friends,

Can you perhaps help us connect with folk?

Sean Madden Mufidah and I are presently house- and cat-sitting for a couple friends in our old hometown of Lewes, East Sussex — while organizing writing workshops here in the South East of England, and beyond.

Staying On by Paul Scott

Anyway, our friends have a good collection of books, and I noticed they have a copy of Paul Scott's Staying On, the Booker Prize-winning follow-on novel to Scott's likewise critically acclaimed Raj Quartet.

You can read more about my reading the Raj Quartet here. But while I've had a copy of Staying On for years, I've not, for some reason, read the whole of it. High time I do so.

I'm only a quarter of the way through the novel at this point, but it's quintessential Paul Scott — topnotch writing and characterization based upon a thorough knowledge of post-Raj India — with an extra dose of wry humor thrown into the mix.

Looking forward to continuing with it.

Sean Madden As of this past Thursday, Mufidah and I are back in England, after 11 months thus far of slow traveling in Europe, with no end in sight.

A week-and-a-half ago we drove out of Burgos, Spain — where we'd been living for about seven-and-a-half months — and continued on to and through France, stopping off in the Dordogne to run a 2-day writing workshop in St Julien d'Eymet.

On Thursday we arrived in Dover via ferry and drove to Hastings, where we led a writing workshop this past Saturday at The Beacon, a lovely venue where the sun shined magically and we decided to hold the whole of the workshop on the lawn, overlooking the sea and wide horizons beyond Hastings below.

We'll be in the British Isles this spring and summer running our Write from the Heart writing workshops. So, if you'd like to help us bring a workshop to your neck o' the woods, do get in touch!
