Hi Karen,

Mostly I was inspired by reading a lot as a child and in school, almostly constantly buried in books since I wasn’t very good at sports. As I grew into my teenage years, I was lifted to increased levels of introspection by the power of words. Plato, Shakespeare, Lenny Bruce, The Beatles, and Tom Wolfe all made me a firm believer that words in our lives mattered and could change the world.

When I took my first shots at the craft as a very young writer with plays and musicals, the encouragement I got from teachers and friends helped me overcome my fears that I would never be as good as the writers I admired. Once I got past those levels of self-doubt, the feedback from audiences and readers continued to drive my passion for improvement. I found that a combination of humor, irony, extreme emotional pressure, technical explanation, and philosophy could become a voice that was my own.

I actually blogged about this recently. You can read more here:

Today it’s all about hearing from people like you. If one of my stories has an impact on someone’s thinking or inspires them intellectually or emotionally, I am fired up and on the job.

Thank you for your thoughtful question.

Staying Alive

[image error]This will be the third post in an unintended trilogy following my last two on why companies that might appear to be “built to last” may suddenly evaporate before your eyes. In response to those stories (Gone So Soon and 8 Warnings That Your Company Is Toast), I received several inquiries wondering if there were ways to spot an imminent mudslide while there’s time to escape.

“E.L. Doctorow said once said that 'Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way.' You don't have to see where you're going, you don't have to see your destination or everything you will pass along the way. You just have to see two or three feet ahead of you. This is right up there with the best advice on writing, or life, I have ever heard.”
Anne Lamott, Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life

“Satire is tragedy plus time. You give it enough time, the public, the reviewers will allow you to satirize it. Which is rather ridiculous, when you think about it.”
