A native of Austin, Texas, Laini Giles grew up the daughter of bookworms, and became a Nancy Drew devotee early on. When she realized there might be no escape from hairy tarantulas and bad guys with guns, she decided to write about them instead, finishing her first mystery novel with custom illustrations when she was eight.
A graduate of the University of North Texas, she put the writing on hold for a while when real life got in the way (i.e.—she met and married her Canadian husband and headed north for maple-flavored goodies and real beer). She highly recommends moving to another country and not being able to work for a year for finishing any novels you may have laying around.

I continue to write something, anything until the way becomes clear. In my genre (real people's lives seen through my eyes), I sketch out a timeline of real events, then skip around and write whatever I'm in the mood for that day. I arrange and rearrange until I'm happy with what's there. (less)

Hi all–

Sorry about the long delay between blogs. Haven’t entered any blogathons lately, and haven’t had the energy to do much more than write. I’m working a contract job from home right now, and finding it difficult to switch modes between professional writing and leisure writing when only a number of feet separate the dining table (professional writing) from the couch (leisure writing).

So in o...

I've tried reading various Canadian fiction authors, and up til now, I've gotten a lot of bleak Maritime fishing villages, bleak Indian villages, bleak prairie villages, stark wintry landscapes, or bleak dystopian futures. Don't get me wrong-- I don' ...more

"It grabbed me & wouldn't let me go!

I enjoyed Laini Giles' writing style tremendously! Extremely absorbing story. I couldn't (& didn't want to) pull myself away! Olive's "voice" made me feel like I was living her life. 2 things: the end of..." Read more of this review »

"Fascinating historical fiction

This novel brings to life many of the early 20th century names in theater and silent films. It is a well-researched book, full of period detail. I had trouble putting it down."

“If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it.”

“It's like making a sandwich. I start with the bread and the meat. That's the architecture. Add some cheese, lettuce and tomato. That's character development and polishing. Then, the fun part. All the little historical details and the slang and the humor is the mayonnaise. I go back and slather that shit everywhere. The mayo is the best part. I'm a bit messy with the mayo.”

“I'm not a very good writer. But I'm a HELLUVA re-writer.”

“It took me fifteen years to discover that I had no talent for writing, but I couldn't give it up because by that time I was too famous.”
Robert Benchley

“I shrug and smile amiably the way you do when you're in a foreign country and have no idea what anyone is saying, so you end up grinning and nodding your way into a three-way with a henna vendor and a camel.”
Sarah Bird, How Perfect Is That

“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you're wonderful, and don't forget to make some art -- write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”
Neil Gaiman

“If you don't know history, then you don't know anything. You are a leaf that doesn't know it is part of a tree. ”
Michael Crichton

“Books aren't written - they're rewritten. Including your own. It is one of the hardest things to accept, especially after the seventh rewrite hasn't quite done it.”
