Gareth Southwell is a writer, illustrator and philosopher who lives in South Wales in the UK. He has a PhD in death, which has been read by exactly four people (including himself). His first novel MUNKi is just a thinly fictionalised version of this, with most of the boring bits taken out and replaced with robots and people swearing in Welsh. Sign up to his monthly email list for news, views, and free stories from the MUNKi universe. Griffith, the millionaire Welsh philanthropist who gifted Griffith Park (where the Hollywood sign is) to the City of Los Angeles. He was later imprisoned for the attempted murder of his wife, so I would think there's good material there for a book (if there isn't one already).(less)

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your question, and glad that you enjoyed the book. By the way, I should point out that this is the third edition, and that I was brought in to build on the work of Gary Haden and Michael Picard, who were responsible for most of the logic and mathematics paradoxes. For some reason, the publisher has left their names off the front, unfortunately.

I've always drawn, and from the point where I started to teach philosophy, and started to develop my own resources, it was natural to try to make the these more interesting via images (to explain concepts, etc). And when these resources eventually became books (the guides to Descartes and Nietzsche), then I started to branch out into providing caricatures and illustrations for them. However, before this (coincidentally), I was already providing illustrations for The Philosohpers' Magazine, so I guess that was one other reason that these carried over to the books.

There have been times where I would have been glad to concentrate on one activity (either the writing or drawing), and hoped one would take off, but this never seems to have happened! Which is probably a good thing, and certainly has made my career more varied!

Thanks again - and best wishes,

Gareth.(less)

“Survival of the Richest”, by Douglas Rushkoff

What is the point of capitalism? If asked, Scottish economic philosopher Adam Smith would have said that its primary goal is the generation of wealth, and that the riches of those who succeed “trickle down” to the rest of society, who benefit indirectly as the rich spend their wealth. While not disagreeing, economist F. A. Hayek would have instead emphasised freedom – that economic deregulation...
