Mary Brock Jones, author, lives in Auckland, New Zealand, but her childhood years in the stunning Otago region of the South Island live on in the romantic adventures of her heroes and heroines.
When not office bound or being towered over by four grown sons, much to their endless amusement, she writes historical romance and science fiction.
She grew up in a land where history marches alongside farms, stunning tourist vistas and the entrepeneurial endeavours of the modern day. The love of historicals was born in the pages of great books by such as Georgette Heyer and Dorothy Dunnett; the science fiction and love of the environment came from playing with the world around her, and from writers such as Isaac Asimov and Anne McCaffrey.

This one is about Ethan Winter, brother of Caleb Winter (Torn - Arcadia book 1). Ethan has never wanted to do anything but run the family business. It fascinates him, how to make all the parts of it work better. But then Winter Solaris becomes the target of an unscrupulous cabal of power brokers, Ethan and his family are falsely imprisoned and only saved from execution by Caleb and his wife Fee's actions. The cabal are overthrown, but how does Ethan keep alive the business he loves while negotiating the new rules his world now lives under. Then he meets a feisty union leader, equally determined to protect the jobs and lives of the people under her care. Jobs she thinks Ethan has threatened. (less)

The words are being dragged kicking and screaming from my head. For me, the easiest way to kick start a writing blitz is to go to a cafe, put my headphones in and listen to music, then start writing, pen on paper. For some reason, that just starts the words going best for me.

Everyone has their own trick. Find a kick start mechanism that works for for you, but don't stop trying to write in the meantime. Sit in that chair, put fingers to keyboards or pen to paper, and add the words, one at a time. It's that simple, and that hard, as so many writers before me have said, although I think it was Neil Gaiman who came up with this wonderfully succinct version of it. Put down words, and hopefully one day they will come together. And remember, a first draft is only for you, so make mistakes, go down blind corners, write the most awful of sentences. It doesn't matter; just get that story out.(less)

I’ve been doing a lot of reading of old faithfuls lately – my beloved keeper shelves – but also exploring new authors. But there are so many books out there now, and sometimes the hunt for a new and engaging book can feel a bit overwhelming. Like most readers, I imagine, what I want to read can change from day to day, depending on a whole ton of reasons. What’s happening in life, whether I wan...

“Sticking his fists against his side, he glared at her. “I’ve had enough,” he announced. “The only safe place for you is my house—my home and my bed.”

Whether it was the fist to his nose or the bright flush of red on her cheeks, he could not say. One thing finally got through. This time, he was the idiot.”
Mary Brock Jones, A Heart Divided

“He slept still in the induced coma his doctors had kept him in since he arrived. She could see the bruises, see the healing wound of the burn that stretched over his side. She reached out a hand, hovered just above the field and traced the path of the yellow, black and angry red of his healing flesh.
She had done that to him.”
