N. Lombardi Jr, the N for Nicholas, has spent over half his life in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, working as a groundwater geologist. Nick can speak five languages: Swahili, Thai, Lao, Chinese, and Khmer (Cambodian).

In 1997, while visiting Lao People's Democratic Republic, he witnessed the remnants of a secret war that had been waged for nine years, among which were children wounded from leftover cluster bombs. Driven by what he saw, he worked on The Plain of Jars for the next eight years.
Nick maintains a website with content that spans most aspects of the novel: The Secret War, Laotian culture, Buddhism etc. http://plainofjars.net

His second novel, Journey Towards a Falling Sun, is set in the wild frontier of northern Kenya.

Hi Michelle

To give you an idea of the story see the "strapline" and draft back cover copy below:

Strapline:
Light and shadow, good and evil, illusion and reality, where are the lines drawn? For psychiatrist Tessa Thorpe, finding out is imperative for her survival.

Back cover copy:
An enigmatic, mentally ill patient in a cryptic institute forces psychiatrist Tessa Thorpe to navigate the nebulous territory between truth and fiction, madness and deception, paranoia and conspiracy, exposing her to things she doesn't want to know, and immersing her so deep in a game of politics and terror that her very life hinges on finding her way out.

The manuscript (PDF file) is very near to final editing. I have 2 (quite different) novels with a UK publisher, but I am looking for a new publisher (through agents) so it will be quite a while. I may end up self-publishing if there no takers. All this means it could be 6 months to a year before publication date, but I will notify you as it draws near.

Actually 3 1/2 stars

Not as good as I expected.

Two things characterized this book for me. One, which I did not appreciate, is the philosophical ramblings in both the omniscient (3rd person) narration and at times in the dialogue; so pedantic and esote

"It really is a great book. But it's so boring at the part of Dorian was reading the book which Lord Henry lent to him. Anyway, it's still better. The moral of the story is 'Be careful what you wish for'."

"Thanks to Audiofile's free summer audiobook program, I listened to the audiobook version of this for free. The narrator's voice was pleasant, although it wasn't particularly great for the female voices, but they didn't play a major role in the sto..." Read more of this review »

More of N.'s books…
“The trouble with life is that we lead it forwards and understand it backwards.”
N. Lombardi Jr.

“I gave you a few laughs and showed you a good time, but there was no future with me. So although it was fun while it lasted, you made up your mind to choose the stability and security a rich man can offer.”
She shook her head. “No.”
“No?”
“If you look in your heart, you know that’s not true.”
“So, what is it then, he went into a jealous rage and he threatened
you?”
“Yes.”
“With your life?”
“No.”
“Well then...”
“With yours.”
N. Lombardi Jr., Journey Towards a Falling Sun

“The war should stop,” Andrew declared to him, thinking he had
finally found a willing ear to sympathize with his dilemma. ‘There’s
so much suffering going on. It is madness. I ask you, as a holy man,
if there is a Supreme Being, why doesn’t he step in and end it?”
“Do the fish see the water?”
“The fish…see water?”
“Do the worms in the dung heap see the dung they borrow
through? Does humanity see the world? You, my son, are but a thin
thread, interwoven with many threads of all colors, but you cannot
see the tapestry of which you are a part. You are only one note in a
song that you cannot hear. Suffering, is the world, and the world is
the same as suffering.”
N. Lombardi Jr., The Plain of Jars
