Shadow People – Cover Reveals
I must say a VERY big thank you to my wonderful sci-fi cover designer. Even though he has read the first book in the series, Chris has only had a few bits revealed to him as to the content of the upcoming books – scribblers are notoriously reticent when it comes to spoilers. And yet he has come up with the perfect covers for the next three books in the series. So – hail to Chris Graham and all those artists who can see into our dreams and interpret them in the real world. Kudos! I can’t wait to see what he does with the final eleven.
I don’t think that a series is something that you write one book at a time, and just guess at what comes next. I have the entire plot for Shadow People planned right till the end, and most of the books already have quite a lot going on. Books two to four will all be published between now and early 2015. So without further waffle, let me share my gorgeous new covers, and a hearty recommendation should you need cover art, to pop over and have a word with their creator – Chris Graham.
Book Two: The Hunger
After the sudden and dramatic appearance of thousands of alien ships in Earth’s skies, and the attempted infiltration and destruction of the planet by the demonic Nefandus, the rulers of the world are reeling. Natalie returns to Lapillus, and together with the Voxavi and their allies meet up with a previously unknown race of ocean dwellers, with a seemingly dubious agenda. Over the millions of years that Lapillus has lain prey to the Nefandus much has changed and there is much to be learned. Gabe, Brian, Shelty and Naka head off on various expeditions that reveal stunning revelations on Earth, Mars, and the Moon, but what is revealed in the deserts of Libya changes everything. The Gluri reveal more to Natalie, and she begins to search for the truth in the ancient, but seemingly universal, legends of God, angels and the devil himself. The Vimana remain as secretive as ever, but one secret as to their origins is revealed. The Voxavi children grow as warriors, and a new race of genetically engineered dragons begins on Naka’s home planet that will resemble their ancestors very little.
Book Three: The Jewel
The importance of Earth in the final battle of good and evil is slowly revealed. More is learned about the souls of all and the simplicity of time and space. The golden orbs in the seas of Lapillus are finally broached, and strange and wonderful treasures are found within, as well as hints as to the origins and motives of the Gretch. The great megalithic jewels of the planet are found to hold strange powers, and the shifting green sands of Lapillus hold the key to finding the most terrifying entity in the universe. Gabe, Brian, Shelty and Naka undertake a dangerous journey to try and recover the one thing that allowed evil to take precedence over good in the universe.
Book Four: The Keeper
It is discovered that the Gretch never gave up their zoo worlds – they merely hid them. Natalie comes face to face with the greatest evil of all time, and it wants more than anything to change her. Only Sablo can save her, but will she be in time? The home world of the Nefandus, thought to have been destroyed by Natalie and Sablo is found, and only the concerted efforts of all the remaining Vimana can prevent their desperate attempts to leave it. Success is unlikely, and if they fail the demons will infiltrate unmapped portions of the universe. The Atunlaki fall into a trap that could signal the death of all of them. Earth struggles to rise above all those who wish to see evil reign. The machinations of a small elite of the new order who worship the Gretch mean that the push of a button will mean the end of the entire battle.
Reblog Saturday – An anniversary, heartfelt gratitude and great posts from the week.
This a a very special reblog Saturday from Sally, and brought both a big smile and some watery eyes to my old dial. Sally Cronin is the warmest, kindest and most wonderful friend anyone could wish for, and I am most certainly looking forward to our Annual Bloggers Conference! Here’s to your strength in the face of sadness, and to the love you share with all.

Reblog Saturday is a way for me to thank individual bloggers for their contribution to my experience here on WordPress. An experience that actually means more than most of you might know. This is a community and as such was instrumental in helping me recover physically and mentally from a fairly tough time.
This week last year was the first time in a while that I felt I was back in my own life again. For several years I had commuted back and forth to the UK one week a month to help look after my mother then in her late 80’s. That timing then moved to three weeks at a time and then full time as she moved into her 90’s.
Don’t get me wrong, so much was positive during those years and certainly there were some very memorable and treasured moments with my mother and family. In the…

The Sunday Show – W.C. Barnes -Wildlife and Landscape Photographer – Tofino, Canada.
An awesome Sunday Show with Sally this week. I love Wayne Barnes’ amazing and beautiful photographs – especially those gorgeous eagles. Absolutely inspiring! Thank you Sally.
Originally posted on Smorgasbord - Variety is the spice of life:
For several months now I have been following the blog of Wayne Barnes who is a wildlife, landscape and seascape photographer. You will probably have seen his wonderful blog where he showcases some of his photographs of eagles, bears and the magnificent scenery around his home in Tofino, on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Tofino has quite a small population (1600) during the winter months but in the summer that multiplies several times over with visitors keen to take advantage of all the outdoor pursuits, sea based activities and the wildlife that lives right on the doorstep.
Apart from on the Tofino Photography blog, many of Wayne’s images have appeared in National Geographic, Readers Digest, many scientific books, journals and websites specific to the area.
Wayne’s photographs are stunning and require very little in the way of description but I asked him to be a…

Postal Postal Workers and Coming Covers
This district is still affected by the postal strike action, and seeing as how they are also my internet suppliers I’m still popping on and off line like the mad hatter all the time. I also haven’t been able to get hold of my actual mail since August. I’ll be heading to the post office again – ever hopeful – because I’ve totally run out of my paper books now, and that’s just plain bad. I’m expecting lots of other books and parcels too, so I’m more than willing to hop over the counter and find them all myself. Strikers pretending to be at work meet crazy scribbler lady – should be interesting.
One of the neighbours has been making an amazing racket, knocking a building down, rebuilding it, and now they’re having a borehole drilled. So between eyeballing all that, and my obsessive checking to see if the internet’s on, I’m not getting a lot of writing done. In the meantime, my awesome cover designer for my Shadow People series, Chris Graham, has been hard at work on the covers for the third and fourth in the series coming out early in 2015, so we will be doing a cover reveal for them tomorrow. Exciting times!
The heirloom tomatoes I planted for the cover of one of my books to be published this year have sprouted and all seem to be doing nicely. I’ve done most of the work for that cover so far, and the book itself is well along the road to being ready now. It’s the best job in the world, this indie trip. Now to see if I can clatter around the internet for a while before being booted out again. Spring has sprung here by the way, with lots of visitors in the garden to munch the fruit on the palms, and I’ve tried to get a picture or two. I’m still fairly clueless with my photography thing, and at this point I’m mainly getting images of departing little birdie bums, but I did get a couple I like a bit by accident, so pics for future covers are definitely going to happen.

Happy #SelfPrintedSplash Day!
The Self-Printed Splash, if you’re not familiar, is a stupid idea I had [I'm typing these words at 2.36am on the morning of said splash, when I have something like 20 responses left to go and Gmail has decided to stop letting me in and there's only so much coffee a person can drink - hence the stupid bit] to launch the third edition of Self-Printed: The Sane Person’s Guide to Self-Publishing.
I invited people to ask me their burning self-publishing question and I answered it under the condition that they’d post it to their blog, Twitter feed or Facebook page today, and in exchange they would get a digital copy of Self-Printed. Come Monday I will be posting links to all the participants’ published questions and answers right here and I’ll be revealing the winners of the Random Participant Wins This and Best Question Asked…

Catherine Ryan Howard #selfprintedsplash
I’m participating in Catherine Ryan Howard’s Self-Printed 3.0 Splash event today. She is celebrating the launch of the third edition of her excellent book Self-Printed: The Sane Person’s Guide to Self-Publishing. Catherine will be answering various self-publishing related questions asked by her fans on sites around and about the internet today. Be sure to visit her for the chance to win cool stuff – her posts are gold for the self-published author, and always entertaining. Now to the question I asked, and her answer.
Jo’s Question: I’d like to know how to put page numbers in properly when publishing with Createspace – so that they don’t start from the very first page of the book.
Catherine’s Answer: You actually inspired me to write a whole, long, detailed (VERY detailed!) blog post on this subject, so thank you! It is a pain but if you go slow and follow my instructions step by step, you’ll be fine. You can find the blog post here Inserting Page Numbers and Running Heads.
Awesome! This is a brilliant and easy to follow tutorial, so I should finally get this right first time.
Catherine Ryan Howard is a writer, self-publisher and caffeine enthusiast from Cork, Ireland. “SELF-PRINTED is my self-publishing bible. It taught me how to format, create and upload my e-books and print-on-demand paperbacks. It showed me practical things such as how to build a website/blog and how to promote my books. More importantly, it taught me how to compete with the professionals. Just look at the results – The Estate Series has sold nearly 100,000 copies and following that I got a traditional book deal with Thomas & Mercer too, so I’m now a hybrid author. Jam-packed full of hints and tips all in one place, I’m always referring back to it. In a word, it’s priceless.” – Mel Sherratt, author of The Estate Series and DS Allie Shenton Series
NaNoWriMo Time
Originally posted on Lit World Interviews:
I took part in the NaNoWriMo event in 2012, and completing that crazy, epic sprint to the end taught me more than I expected about the job of writing. First and foremost is the daily word quota. The more you fall behind, the less chance you have of catching up, and writing just under 1 700 words a day seems daunting. The thing is, that most of us write more words than that every day without thinking about it. We blog, we interview, we write bits of our works in process. It’s absolutely doable though.
The beauty of the NaNo is that you get to leave chunks out. You just pop over anything you’re not sure of and write on, because editing during NaNo is death. The urge to go back and at least read over what I’d written so far nearly took me out, but I knew that if…
