Jane Dougherty is a product of the Irish diaspora. She was brought up in Yorkshire and educated in Manchester and London before moving to France to work in the wine trade. She spent fourteen years in Paris where she married and had four children, studied Irish for a year and taught herself Italian. Next move was to Laon in Picardy, a medieval gem of a town set in beautiful countryside, where her fifth child was born. She now lives in Bordeaux with her family, a Spanish greyhound and a posse of cats.

Like a lot of my stories this one began as a single scene—I imagined a classroom full of girls, all dressed in grey with their heads covered. They all had their heads down, bored to death and miserable except one girl who was staring out of the window. My vision followed hers and I saw the swirls of sand and dust across a crystal dome, and beyond, a desert of chaotic rocks and a single beam of light. I knew that I wanted to write about that girl, get her out of her miserable existence, and find out what was beyond the crystal dome. The more I write about this world the more complex and layered it becomes, hence the short story spin offs. I wonder sometimes if I'll ever be finished with it :)(less)

Earth ocean rolls

A poem begun entirely by the Oracle, then nudged along to an ending of my choosing.

Hearts dance to the greening,

the slow dance that never ends.

Day dawns damp, sowing spangles

to coax seeds set deep

in the dark of the earth ocean,

still in winter sleep dreaming,

but spring stirs, will roll from a light swell

to storm-roar of shooting and spreading,

unfolding and unfurling, climbing

skyward towards the...

The Island of the Day Before by Umberto Eco
"This is an amazing and thought-provoking book, which is par for the course for Umberto Eco. It's not quite the transcendental experience that "The Name of the Rose" is, but it's still pretty good. Exploring the nature of time as well as morality,..." Read more of this review »

"Une excellente histoire de cape et d'épée, avec des dragons en bonus ! Et très bien écrit également. Le rythme est un peu lent au début, je me suis perdue entre tous les personnages, mais ça devient de plus en plus captivant au fur et à mesure qu'..." Read more of this review »
