Martha Johnson is an author and speaker with both fiction and non-fiction credits to her name.

She draws her non-fiction leadership material from her more than 30 year career as an executive in business and government. She served in both the Clinton and Obama Administrations, culminating in tenure as the Administrator of the General Services Administration, a position for which she was confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate.

For fiction she reaches into her personal experiences with her faith community, her social justice concerns, her LBGT friends, and the arts.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Johnson grew up in California and North Dakota and attended Northfield School for Girls in Massachusetts. She was graduated from Oberlin

I have a book club meeting on Wednesday and I haven't finished the books! Yikes.

Yesterday I read one of the books. It's the fastest slow-read I have ever done. I grabbed main words out of descriptions, paid attention to dialogue, and skipped when the author repeated (which, luckily, this author did a lot). It worked. I have a million questions for the discussion.

I think that I had to choose as... Read more of this blog post »

I am always surprised by Erdrich. I feel her books start slow and don't have an aura to them but then I read one and it pops. This was a lovely plot and setting and evoked much in me.

Listened to this on tape and it was tedious. But, it taught me a lot about the clashes and issues of the post WWI era. Details were interesting!

Jan felt it really worked to listen to this on tape. I might try that. I read a good part of it but it was exhausting! Powerful story but Faulkner is still a challenge for me.

I will return to this book. Also watched some of the PBS series. Overall, a tremendously valuable book. I had no idea about the way in which we view the body (humors, liquids, etc) would so powerfully influence cures/diagnosis. Stands to reason but t ...more

Lots of fun to read and learn about this era and this sport. Writer drew heavily on source material at the last minute before these men died. A little uneven because of that but really hardly a complaint from me.

Very very important book to read. Evoked much conversation in the book club. I found it a bit hyper-frenetic and the bias was obvious. She was raising incredibly important issues so I can fogive the over-passion. Highly recommend it.

I'm glad I read it -- but that is not saying much. It was a window into an era. It is irritating to read about how he handled women. I find my current life has difficulty stretching back to such a time -- calcified mind, no doubt. I also don't know w ...more

Truly fabulous book. It gives such a deep emotional opening into the trauma of the war. And the conflict of North and South. Will re-read.

Hard to like the book -- with all its very tedious detail but it certainly makes me understand much more. The Princeton section is fascinating to this bureaucrat. The way he wandered around career choices is also illuminating. The EGO.
