There... I said it. Unfortunately I'm going to guess that most people have very little idea what I mean. Being adored, praised, and liked is the crack cocaine of the human world - whether it's associated with writing, painting, making music, crafting sculptures, or any other amazing act of expression. Look at how people fight for retweets and favs and likes and followers. Social media is particularly wired to expose our deepest desires which is why it has taken over our mindshare in such a short period of time. But if you are so busy caring about other people's opinions - most of them complete strangers - then how can you be focused on expressing yourself?
While social media exposes this fundamental flaw in our belief system, the details are much more systemic and frightening. We are persistently bombarded with imagery, iconography, and implicit suggestions about who and what we should be. When I ask someone what a beautiful woman looks like, they are much more likely to tell me what they believe I want to hear based on the media's projection of what is attractive. When I ask someone who is a popular author, they are much more likely to name someone well known and famous because there is a better chance of my approval. When I sit across from someone at an art gallery and admit that I know so little about various schools of art that it's shameful so I go to places like the Tate Modern and National Portrait Gallery to blindly absorb and revel in my emotional response - they feel the need to educate me or scorn me for being such a foolish idiot. All because being liked, adored, and praised is akin to godliness in a society that is estranged from their own sense of self-worth and would rather believe the sentiment of a few hundred followers than their own objective evaluation of what they've achieved and what they need to move on with.
This is the sort of thing that censors art, destroys the gifted, and crushes the creative mind. As a society we like to think we are so very advanced, but we are still the child on the playground, alone and afraid, and hoping someone will come along and be friendly - the right person of course because we wouldn't want a friend of even lower social status than ourselves...

[Mel Schwartz] Whether the complaint is that the patriarchial system is endlessly assaulting women - it is, by the way, but it's only successful because women care about the system's opinion of them - or that there is no true gender, sexual preference, racial, or ethnic equality - equally true and confusing because are all of us supposed to be equal interchangeable cogs with the exact same values and life goals - we have been sucked into a belief delusion. As an author, you're checking your sales, watching your Facebook page, looking over your blogs, and chasing around Twitter hoping to be someone other people want to know. You're writing and editing thinking, "Will they like this?" You're trapped between the opinion of your mother, who refuses to read your stories unless they have a happy ending, and your buying audience, which seems fickle and random at best. Your fighting with the right image to portray in an author photo, and hoping your bio makes you seem like the sort of person who knows things and is well liked. And it's pretty damn likely that none of it is you at all. It's just a story you are trying to sell for the adoration that you think you need.
This is the insanity of putting more faith in outside opinion than your own. In fact, if most of your own opinion can be prefaced with "Suzie would think..." or "Mom always nagged me about..." then it may not even be clear that you have a personal opinion at all. You may just be projecting playbacks of the criticism and input of people that for some fleeting part of your life were important to your perceived value in the world. That kills all of us on the inside if we don't nip it in the bud.
I'll share a personal story to make it clear that even someone as anti-social and accustomed to being a pariah unwittingly goes through this just like anyone else. In 1998, I got the offer. Not just another contract, not just another job, but the big one. I didn't dance around and pour myself a Coca-Cola over ice. I didn't ask myself how the hell I managed to pull it off. I called my father and told him I was going to work for a Big Five firm. There was a pause, and before he could respond, I asked him if I finally had a "real" job in his opinion. Yep. I had listened for decades about how my consulting career choices were just one sham after another, and that what I did wasn't worthwhile... and apparently I believed that the most important thing in my world was proving my own father was wrong. Pretty stupid and soul rotting, but that's where I was back then. In one way or another, I suspect a lot of folks are still out there trying to do the same or suffering the torments of dreams that aren't even their own.
In reality, what I should have realized then is that my most valuable trait is fabrication. It's not even a job skill, though I suspect it should be. I'm not even sure how you teach it to others, though I try time and time again. Fabrication is the ability to coherently align information to produce a cohesive view or produce an end product. It requires a high tolerance for trial and error and doesn't necessarily empahsize social skill development until you begin to peak. If you're an author, an artist, a sculptor, an architect, or even a doctor then you probably have some level of fabrication skill. The lowest levels of the skill tend to be imitators and delegators - they might have a vision but they don't know how to learn how to implement it and must ride on the coattails of others. The mid level fabricators vary from having a solid vision but limited hands-on experience to having a very mundane vision but being able to mass produce it quite readily. You know what destroys fabricators? Believing other people's opinions matter.
There is a close second killer as well: Playing by other people's rules. Let me share an example of something most of you are familiar with. Do you ever break the speed limit when you drive? I know I do. I know people on the road pacing me and passing me definitely do. I suspect most drivers do at one time or another. For someone with limited social understanding like myself, this sort of rule breaking acceptance has always been difficult to understand. I was around twenty when I started to regularly drive up to Chicago, and I had little to no experience driving in a big city. Every rule I knew was wrong. I couldn't get from point a to point b, and I was extraordinarily frustrated. I was a digital driver - in my correct lane, signaling before changing lanes, right or left but never straddling the middle. Driving in an urban setting requires a more analog approach. You have to follow the flow of traffic while aiming for the path of least resistance and anticipating turbulent circumstances. I learned how to drive all over again. I literally dumped everything I knew and started over because obviously every input that I'd received in the past wasn't applicable. I found a new way to perceive driving, and I simplified my experience to a single expression: "Lanes are optional." It was a quantum leap in my understanding of human rule systems. So long as you are willing to set aside the opinions and expectations of others, everything is optional.

So what is it like choosing your own code of values and disregarding the beliefs of strangers? To be honest, it's probably pretty hard for most people. Being liked is definitely the ultimate drug, and you can't kick a lifelong addiction easily. You get bashed in from all sides - because no side is on your side. Not that most of those people every really cared about you previously, but now you're abandoning them and that provokes a brutal negative response. That's right. Not elevating their opinion to the most important thing in your life makes them the victim and you are to blame for heartlessly abandoning them. You have to learn to cope with the loneliness and self-doubt that previously was full of half-truths and meaningless accolades. In all honesty, a Facebook like is worth less than the laser printed certificate of achievement your manager provided instead of a raise last year. You have to question a lot of your prior unchallenged faith in humanity. It's worse than being the last childless couple and suffering through all the veiled hints that maybe a doctor could help you conceive the children you aren't interested in having. It's not quite as bad as writing bestiality though you may discover that you provoke former aquaintances in the same way. They'll insist you wear a big scarlet A, but you're not playing by their rules any more so print out little blue B+ stickers and apply them to their license plates. You are gambling for the big stakes though. Not popularity, but longevity.
This world is drowning in media. In art. In every conceivable creation of humans. My goal is to go through the process and achieve excellence. To produce something that I can call my own. To give birth to something that expresses my life and experiences and rhythm. You may have different goals, but you need to make sure that they are your goals. I challenge everyone to aspire to produce something different than the next holiday Coca-Cola can, but if you can come up with a cool Coca-Cola can then do that! The most important thing about being free to believe in yourself, is being able to honestly achieve what's important to you.
I started this by saying you need to kick your worst belief to the curb. I'd like to go one step further. You need to stop believing that other people's lives should change to conform to your opinions. Some people will never escape the need to be approved. They will do anything to be approved and feel appreciated. They will do such terrifying and self-defeating and destructive things to be heard and seen and have fifty retweets in a week. We can't change the fact that other people are addicts to external approval. We can change how we express ourselves to be positive. It'll be hard. You're going to take a beating. You're going to make mistakes. But there's a lot of value to seeing the good in things and praising that, and setting aside the not so good unless asked for a constructive opinion. At times like those, be constructive. Share your experiences and ideas. With no expectation that the recipient will adopt, leverage, or build off of them. Good luck! It's not going to be easy. This is a time of year to look at what you will do differently based on what you know now. It sounds strange, but a lot of folks don't (a) review their experiences, (b) quantify their successes and failures, and (c) revise their plan. Instead they set new goals and recharge their shields before going off into the unknown like a certain new Star Trek captain. There's a better way to do this.
As an author you have a lot of ways to capture data, a lot of data to translate into information, and a whole set of opportunities and challenges. It's important to realize that all the sales data alone is about opportunity for next year. At the same time, you can clearly see what missed the mark - whether that's a product, marketing, or promotion problem may be less obvious. You'll want to get your arms around this data. And if you don't have your monthly sales by product and region as the bare minimum starting point, then you need to make that your first 2014 priority.
To give you a feel for what I mean, I'm going to share some basic analytics we use to assess how Cherish Desire is doing. This is the beginning of a process to lead to recognizing growth opportunities and market development.
These are our top sellers from Cherish Desire Singles and Very Dirty Stories. "Cherish Desire Singles: Object Confessions, Collection 1" was an unexpected hit in 2013. I adore the stories, but they don't click for Moon - she's not a fan of female masturbation stories - which is usually a bad sign. It has outstripped books published prior to it, and become a month over month champion. "Cherish Desire: Very Dirty Stories #1" is a slightly different story. It has both launch and legs power. Being priced at 99¢ certainly hasn't hurt. But one of the assessments we need to do is look how each of the Very Dirty Stories titles is faring in general. Generally we know that there's an entire portion of the series that gets high traffic. But there's more than a few volumes who rarely sell a copy. We need to take all the sales figures and generate reports in aggregate, month over month, and region by region.
That's just the tip of the iceberg though. There's a lot of other data we collect which needs to be assessed, and plenty of new services offering to provide more insights. Here's some other places we pull information.

We've been censored on Kobo!
Watching censorship in action...
After a dedicated push to bring Kobo titles to market, we are now watching all of that work be removed in an explosion of censorship. Very Dirty Stories eBooks released to Kobo have all vanished from the store catalog in the span of 12 hours, and we have not received an explanation. Our closest guess is that Kobo will be aggressively removing all erotica titles from their Writing Life program. A quick search turns up only 2657 Romance titles under Erotica which is considerably fewer than we recall in past weeks.
There's nothing we can do. Cherish Desire Erotica will go forward, but with Kobo and other retailers shaking in their boots about selling adult content to adults, writers and publishers are just caught in the middle.Where censorship comes from...
Typically speaking, I avoid this topic. I don't interfere in your life, and generally you don't interfere in mine. That's a good way to live. But something changed in Great Britain over the last couple of years, and now we see the censorship that stems from government interference in adult rights.
In the name of protecting the children or maybe just governing people's unhealthy habits, David Cameron made a successful play to censor the internet. His success will see the implementation of ISP level censorship across a broad set of topics without any public supervision, and require adults to actively request full access to the proper internet. Not only is this a shame tactic, the opt out of the internet filtering will be filed with the government so you can be tracked for standing up for your right to access the world without being filtered and managed. You're always and already monitored, and there's no opt out for that. This is just another way of making you feel guilty for actually being an adult.
If that was it then most of us former colonists would laugh a bit and move on. Let's be perfectly honest folks, England is a fine little island and we love to visit, but it's not exactly a world superpower. Unfortunately, censorship is a bit like the flu. Censorship is universally contagious. But it doesn't spread through laws since most of the western hemisphere isn't ruled by law. It's spread through the emotional perception of risk.
And WH Smith, Amazon, Kobo, and Barnes & Noble think there is very real risk to their brands. This weekend all four began sweeping through their self-published ebook titles and aiming to cleanse themselves of any possible further accusation of selling legal adult content. If that's sounds ridiculous then you're not alone. But it's happening anyway. "Self-Published Erotica is Being Singled Out For Sweeping Deletions From Major eBookstores" on The Digital Reader gives a good summary. In short, self-published authors are being broadly targeted for removal with no warning or information on appeals. The majority of the content being censored is both legal and easily accessible with a Google search. The panic about being able to find abusive works at WH Smith makes headlines, but it ignores two very important facts. First, children should be using the internet with adult supervision and involvement. Second, there are abusive titles available, some of them like "Lolita" are considered classics and not being removed, and then there is all the graphic sexual content that depicts gay, alternative, and BDSM lifestyle pairing which is only abusive to people not from those walks of life.
Of course, that's me being reasonable. Living on a mudball overpopulated with primates has taught me that reasonable is unlikely at best. So where we stand today is a tough spot. Either open a marketplace which will persevere the censorship of the masses, or move our erotica back to dark rooms off dirty streets. I'm not sure which is better. But I do know that this latest wave of censorship isn't going to go away easily.
