Karen was raised in an Irish/Italian family where storytelling was a way of life. Her father had a plethora of characters for bedtime tales that provoked her desire to write children's books. Poetry and short stories followed until finally Karen completed her first adult novel Artista by the Sea and a middle grade novel With Crow; The Tale of Two Sisters.

Karen currently has a play in NYC The Great Forgotten that she wrote with her daughter Kacie Devaney, which has captured the attention of sought after director Stephen Singer of the acclaimed Barrow Group in Manhattan.
