D. Bryant Simmons is an award-winning author who pens realistic fiction that straddles the line between art and social commentary. She is currently hard at work on The Morrow Girls Series, a family saga that spans three generations of women. Simmons' fiction delves into muddy waters, exploring subjects such as domestic violence, addiction, and mental illness. She believes novels can act as agents of change and hopes that her writing will inspire and empower women.

Simmons' writing style is reflective of her personality. She suffers from a horrible case of impatience. She values emotional connections above all else and is hopelessly distrustful of happy endings.

She is a graduate of the Univeristy of Illinois where she earned her BA in Sociolo

My prologues are like short stories. They're gut-wrenching and tender and pretty much a snapshot of what you can expect throughout the novel. Once I've got that nailed, the creative juices really start flowing. Then when I've figured out exactly how to get from the midpoint to the conclusion I feel a huge sense of relief. I start to relax and trust my characters. The last point is when I hand over the story to the readers. Readers find me on Twitter and sometimes they really just want to say it was good, other times they want to converse...and that I LOVE!(less)

When my girl has conflicting emotions about being a girl I can't help but wonder if I've failed her. If we as a society are failing her.

“asked me if I loved him.  Should’ve told him the truth. That I ain’t know enough about myself to love anybody. That I wasn’t even sure I had it in me. Maybe folks were born with a specific reserve of love inside them and maybe mine was all used up. But instead of saying any of that I just said, “’Of course I do.”

“Freedom is a state of mind, I said wondering where I'd heard it before, not a state of being. We are all slaves to gravity and morality and the vicissitudes of nature. Our genes govern us much more than we'd like to think. Our bodies can not know absolute freedom but our minds can, can at least try.”
