We think we know our families and then one day someone tells us something that startles us. In my family, there was a relative who committed suicide which I wasn't told about as a child. As an adult I learned the "secrets" behind the suicide. I think a good family secret makes a wonderful plot device. My first novel ABSOLUTION turns on secrets between a husband and wife. How the discovery of such secrets in our own lives affects us fascinates me as a novelist. (less)

Jane Austin is a master at creating sexual tension between this couple even when they don't physically touch each other or even speak of love. It's a marvelous book. For contemporary sensibilities, I like Cecilia and Robbie in ATONEMENT by Ian McEwan. Considering both novels are by British authors, I'm wondering if the Brits have an edge here because these books deal not only with love and romance but social separations because of "class."(less)
