Some days this means pushing through a chapter that I'm struggling with. I know it's not going to be my best work, coming from a block, but I always know I can come back and edit that. Sometimes its by writing something other than my current project, so a short story or a poem or just a paragraph of description. I'm not the kind of person to avoid difficult tasks, and that's all writer's block is to me. Those days when the thing that I love becomes a difficult task- which makes it all the more important to do right then. (less)

"I wasn't thrilled with the book at the beginning. I didn't realize that I was reading a Christian book, and while there's nothing wrong with that, all the worship and church references were a bit much. That being said, after I got over that part i..." Read more of this review »

I was only moved by maybe one or two of the stories in this collection- the rest of them were fairly bland.

Very interesting take on reality and Biblical figures. A bit of a let down towards the end that was supposed to be profound but just ended up in a giant spiral.

Pretty wording, but it doesn't do enough with the original fairytale to unseat any of my other favorite re-tellings.

Good characters and relationships as usual for Greeley. Not as highly recommended by me for it's unapologetic rape culture leanings and highly anti-feminist sentiments and anti-feminist stereotypes at times (though it is understandable for the time ...more

Got this on loan from a friend of mine, and absolutely fell in love with it. The story is original, the characters compelling, and the overarching theme of the book and how stories interact with readers hits home in a way not a lot of stories do. ...more

The book was entertaining and had an interesting storyline and characters. It is written in a more tell-than-show kind of format, and for today's audience is full of stereotypes and derogatory terms that no longer should be acceptable. A good read if ...more

Tennessee Williams
“I've got the guts to die. What I want to know is, have you got the guts to live?”
Tennessee Williams, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Joan Didion
“We tell ourselves stories in order to live...We look for the sermon in the suicide, for the social or moral lesson in the murder of five. We interpret what we see, select the most workable of the multiple choices. We live entirely, especially if we are writers, by the imposition of a narrative line upon disparate images, by the "ideas" with which we have learned to freeze the shifting phantasmagoria which is our actual experience.”
Joan Didion, The White Album

August Wilson
“Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing.”
August Wilson

L. Frank Baum
“No thief, however skillful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.”
L. Frank Baum, The Lost Princess of Oz

Sigrid Undset
“All my days I have longed equally to travel the right road and to take my own errant path.”
Sigrid Undset, Kristin Lavransdatter
