Stillness

Stillness: a mountain lake’sSudden surface sheen: no wind—A minnow  apparent.
The whole lake seems to pause.

Stillness in a city street, early
Morning. No traffic, tram, or shout.
You’re out and about, street surface
Wet and cool from rain. Now a man
Rolls up the metal barrier to his shop,
Gutting the poise with jagged noise.

Unsought stillness in your mind:
How rare. You sit amidst office
Busy-ness or stan Read more of this blog post »

Hans Ostrom and 284 other people liked Roxane's review of Counterfeit:
Counterfeit by Kirstin Chen
"I really enjoyed this fun, smart book about two women who create a business counterfeiting designer handbags. I didn't realize how complex that world is. There is also a fascinating twist toward the middle of the novel that shifts the tone and energy" Read more of this review »

Uruk by Mario Liverani
"The title of this book is a bit misleading. The southern Mesopotamian city of Uruk indeed was one of the first urban centers of mankind and definitely a landmark in the earliest history of human civilizations (from about 4,000 BCE). Mario Liverani re" Read more of this review »

Marathon Man by William Goldman
"3.5 stars— “The Marathon Man” by William Goldman has remained on my ‘Want to Read’ shelf for 10 years. So what better time to knock out this short but enjoyable book than while on a recent cruise. Of course everyone is familiar with the Dustin Hoffma" Read more of this review »

Quotes by Hans Ostrom  (?)

“They call each other ‘E.’ Elvis picks
wildflowers near the river and brings
them to Emily. She explains half-rhymes to him.

In heaven Emily wears her hair long, sports
Levis and western blouses with rhinestones.
Elvis is lean again, wears baggy trousers

and T-shirts, a letterman’s jacket from Tupelo High.
They take long walks and often hold hands.
She prefers they remain just friends. Forever.

Emily’s poems now contain naugahyde, Cadillacs,
Electricity, jets, TV, Little Richard and Richard
Nixon. The rock-a-billy rhythm makes her smile.

Elvis likes himself with style. This afternoon
he will play guitar and sing “I Taste A Liquor
Never Brewed” to the tune of “Love Me Tender.”

Emily will clap and harmonize. Alone
in their cabins later, they’ll listen to the river
and nap. They will not think of Amherst

or Las Vegas. They know why God made them
roommates. It’s because America
was their hometown. It’s because

God is a thing without
feathers. It’s because
God wears blue suede shoes.”

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”
Bernard M. Baruch

“Love is the voice under all silences, the hope which has no opposite in fear; the strength so strong mere force is feebleness: the truth more first than sun, more last than star...”
