On this weeks One Hundred Pennies I am very honored to have Nan Hayworth, (pictured above) former Congresswoman for the 19th District of New York. Nan is not only the entrepreneur, who started her own private ophthalmology practice over twenty years ago, but she was also the first female physician to be elected to Congress.
Also joining us this week will be Brazilian singing sensation Eliane Elias. Child prodigy and already a living legend, Eliane has been nominated for Grammy’s several times over and received a “Best Fall Release” nod from Time Magazine for Shades of Jade.

Does Obama Care?
Oh, Obamacare. An epic, 2,700-page ballad of woe sung in chorus by thousands, if not millions, of Americans (physicians included) across this great land. But why does the allegedly beneficial social reform cause such chagrin? And should you learn the words to the somber tune so that you too can march down to City Hall to sing them on the steps of your local governments? Allow me to illustrate the basics.
The Mandate. Whether you want insurance or not, we will all be mandated to sign up for health coverage by 2014. Anyone who does not care to do so will be charged a fine. People who could not afford coverage before the legislation and still cannot afford coverage after it takes effect will be left out in the cold.
Paying the price. The bill is funded by a $716 million dollar cut in Medicare and bolstered by the January 2013 tax hikes that we are still recovering from. Additionally, the legislation allows insurance companies to build the increased cost of covering individuals with preexisting conditions into the packages for all their customers.
Dismal prognosis for doctors. All physicians will be forced to adhere to standard government issued (often lower) pricing for all routine appointments. Additionally, doctors will be required to enter all of their patients’ medical records into a nationwide ACO system and apply for compensation for services that were not pre-approved.
So, you tell me, is Obamacare help or hurt the American public? I will be discussing the issue with physician, former Congresswoman and my dear friend Dr. Nan Hayworth on One Hundred Pennies at noon this Sunday. Reach out to me on Twitter @msrobinsonny and call me live during the show at 866-970-9622 to weigh in.

NYC x Citi Bike: 5 Things to Know Before You Hit The Road
Kicking off on possibly the nicest day in May, NYC’s Citi Bike program started yesterday morning with a startling 4,511 trips by 5 p.m. according to a tweet by the @NYC Mayor’s Office. While some think the new program is going to change the way tourists and commuters view the city, others see the bicycle program as not only dangerous, but also too costly for what it offers.
Here are 5 things to know before you start to pedal:
Memberships start at $95.00 annually, but starting June 2nd non-members can rent bikes for $9.95 (daily pass) & $25.00 (weekly pass)
DISCOUNTED Membership fees are offered for $60.00/yr if you are a NYC Housing Authority resident or a member of one of the few NYC Community Development Credit Unions listed on the Citi Bike website.
THERE IS NO INSURANCE. If you fall victim to the loss or theft of a Citi Bike you will be charged $1,200 to replace it.
GET THERE EARLY! There are only 6000 bikes to service the 15,000 members of the program. Because one does not have to be a member to enjoy the service, keep in mind that you may be one of 20,000+ that are also looking to use the bikes at any given time.
KEEP AN EYE ON THE TIME. Don’t get bitten by late fees
Annual Membership includes unlimited 45 min trips,
but overage fees start immediately after the 45 min mark. (see below for fee scale)
45 – 75 min
$2.50
75 – 105 min
$9.00
Every additional 30 minutes
+$9.00
Daily/Weekly Membership includes unlimited 30 min trips,
with overage fees beginning after the 30 min mark (see below for fee scale)

Holiday Revelry Rain or Shine
Memorial Day weekend got off to a dreary start here in NYC, and unfortunately, the forecast warns of more rain to come. This could put a damper on your plans– but fret not, you can still have fun out of the sun and enjoy the long weekend by planning ahead.
Be Intrepid… or at least visit it! This week at Chelsea Piers attraction is hosting a free screening of the American classic film Top Gun.
Stress LES. The 18th annual Lower East Side (LES) Arts Festival started today & runs through tomorrow, Sunday, May 25, 2013. It features free theater, music, dance and poetry performances.
Catch Melba Moore at the Apollo. This Saturday, May 25, 2013, R&B living legend, Melba Moore, headlines Harlem’s historic theater.
Tune in to One Hundred Pennies at noon ET this Sunday. The day after her show, I will be discussing self-reinvention and starting over with Melba Moore and Certified Life Coach, Peter Pamela Rose.
Relax at home. Three-day weekends don’t happen often enough, and instead of lamenting over a missed opportunity to spend money or soak up a few harmful UV rays, spend the day lounging at home and rest up for the work week ahead.

Lessons Learned: Superstar Melba Moore on Self-Reinvention
This Sunday we have singing sensation, actress, activist and living legend Melba Moore on AM970 The Answer’s One Hundred Pennies with Michael S. Robinson.
Earlier this week I had the opportunity to speak with Melba on self-reinvention and she had a few tips to share with us before the show.
Tip 1: “Continually remember the past, but don’t get stuck in it.”
Tip 2: “Your music [read "craft"] and wardrobe should be representative of the age and time your’e in.”
Tip 3: “Don’t be afraid to keep starting over. You’re gonna be afraid, but don’t stop!”
To hear more from Melba Moore and to get up to speed with what she has in the works, call in to AM970 this Sunday @ Noon ————– > 1-866-970-9622

A Pension For Reinvention
There comes a point in all of our lives when we must critically assess our habits, our friends, our companies and our jobs in order to determine whether or not they are helping us to achieve our most important life goals. Luckily, the vast majority of us have the luxury of dumping our no good friends, moving past our professional snafus and generally starting from scratch out of the judgmental glare of the public eye. In America, celebrities are not quite as fortunate. From personal scandals to political missteps, today’s famous figures are always precariously perched on the brink of condemnation by a scandal-thirsty society. Nevertheless, these well- known pop culture and governmental heavyweights have masterfully reinvented themselves– sometimes more than once.
Bill Clinton
Former President Bill Clinton was scandalized after an extramarital affair with 22-year-old White House intern, Monica Lewinsky, in the late 1990s. However, he’s managed to evolve into one of the country’s most popular presidents.
Martha Stewart
After spending several months in a federal penitentiary for illegal insider trading, Martha Stewart emerged triumphant and built her company into billion-dollar empire. And have you heard the news about Martha looking for love on Match.com?
Mark Zuckerberg
College dropout to billionaire CEO of Facebook. Need I say more?
Melba Moore
From chart-topping pop princess to penniless divorcee and (poised to be) back again, 80s music legend Melba Moore has seen it all. Tune in to One Hundred Pennies on AM970 The Answer at noon ET this Sunday, May 26th, as she talks reinventing herself and her career with me.

Delta & Shake Shack team up for a much needed “T4X” Break
This week Delta Airlines and the ever so popular Shake Shack team up to bring us the “T4X break” we’ve all been looking for at their pop-up location in SoHo. In celebration of the terminal’s opening, this week only (today through Wednesday) patrons are encouraged to stop by the pop-up space at 376 West Broadway to redeem a ”burger pass” that’s good for one Shake Shack burger.
The 1.4 billion dollar recently renovated terminal is set to open on the 24th of this month and there flyers can enjoy a host of new amenities including:
- more centralized security lanes for better screening
- more kiosks to help lift the burden of travel woes
- Shake Shack!
It’s Monday — can you think of a better reason to smile during your break?
