I either work on a different part of the story or I take a break and let the problem churn in the back of my mind. Or, third option, I grab a notebook and pen and start brainstorming possible solutions. It's happened often enough that I trust the problem will eventually work itself out. I may have to write that section many times before I'm satisfied, but the answer eventually shows up (at least it has so far!).(less)

You create people that become your companions and friends, and you go on journeys with them. Sometimes you drive, and sometimes they tell you where you have to take them. Sneak Peek – A Gift of Fire, Chapter 2

A second sneak peek from A Gift of Fire, this time a snippet from Chapter 2, from Aidan’s perspective. When they had climbed several flights, the stairs ended at a small landing with a single closed door. Almost as soon as Bryn knocked, Lilith opened the door to usher the three of them inside. They … Continue reading "Sneak Peek – A Gift of Fire, Chapter 2" Read more of this blog post »

“Well—I have to say I personally have never drawn such a sharp line between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ as you. For me: that line is often false. The two are never disconnected. One can’t exist without the other. As long as I am acting out of love, I feel I am doing best I know how. But you—wrapped up in judgment, always regretting the past, cursing yourself, blaming yourself, asking ‘what if,’ ‘what if.’ ‘Life is cruel.’ ‘I wish I had died instead of.’ Well—think about this. What if all your actions and choices, good or bad, make no difference to God? What if the pattern is pre-set? No no—hang on—this is a question worth struggling with. What if our badness and mistakes are the very thing that set our fate and bring us round to good? What if, for some of us, we can’t get there any other way?”
Donna Tartt, The Goldfinch

“One always has a better book in one's mind than one can manage to get onto paper.”
Michael Cunningham
