Racism/Brexit book now open access

My book Political Racism: Brexit and Its Aftermath, which provides the fullest available analysis of the role of racist anti-immigration politics, and other forms of racism, in the 2016 referendum, the Brexit crisis of 2016-19 and the Johnson government, is now open access. It provides a distinctive analysis, important correctives to myths which have been widely accepted about Brexit, and a synthesis of relevant research, and is key reading for researchers and students alike.

“Anyone seeking a deeper understanding of how Brexit came to pass should read this book and take its argument seriously” – Tim Bale, Professor of Politics, QMUL.

Emerging consensus among genocide scholars on Israel’s brutal war

In 2010, I wrote Palestine in an International Historical Perspective on Genocide, a pioneering argument for the relevance of ‘genocide’ to Israel-Palestine. Later that year, in a debate in the Journal of Genocide Research prompted by my article, the Holocaust historian Omer Bartov strongly disagreed.

It is therefore particularly striking that Omer has spoken out in the New York Times (10 November) to warn of the danger of genocide in today’s Israeli war in Gaza. My interpretation is, as I have explained in New Lines, that this is already a genocidal war. The convergence of our views is striking testimony to the horrendous nature of what Israel is now doing to Gazans.

I warned that the hospital was still at risk – now the demolition plans are out, will the Conservatives apologise?

Two years ago, when I stood for re-election as Devon County Councillor for Seaton & Colyton, I warned the voters that Seaton Hospital was still at risk. The Conservative Party, led by their candidate Marcus Hartnell, accused me of scaremongering, and he narrowly defeated in me in the election. Now that plans to partially demolish the hospital are out, will they admit I was right and apologise?

2 The Campaign and the New Movements (1964-79)

3 Against the Euromissiles (1979-87)

4 Ending the Cold War, Facing the Fallout (1987-2001)

5 From Iraq to Ukraine (2001-23)

Conclusion: A Third Wave?
