Dorothea Jensen was born in Boston, and grew up in Chillicothe, Illinois. (This is the same little town where Johnston McCulley, the writer who created Zorro, grew up many years earlier.) She majored in English Literature at Carleton College and earned a masters degree in Secondary Education at the University of New Mexico. She has served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in South America, tutored refugees in ESL, taught junior high and high school English, and written grant proposals for arts organization. She and her husband have three grown children and six grandsons.

ELF at the same time I worked on A BUSS FROM LAFAYETTE. Honestly, I feel as if writing a rhyming fantasy story and writing historical fiction for young readers requires me to use very different parts of my brain! Therefore, if I got stuck on one project, I'd turn to the other. That always gets me "unstuck". In January, I plan to start writing another Santa's Izzy Elves story, BIZZY, THE KNOW-IT-ALL-ELF and also a new historical novel set in 17th century Massachusetts, called A SCALP ON THE MOON. (less)

When I was a student at Carleton College in 1964, I took a Jane Austen seminar.  In the summer before school started, everyone in the class received a letter from the professor, Owen Jenkins. He instructed us to order a complete set of Jane Austen's novels from Blackwell's Bookshop in Oxford, England.
I remember being thrilled at the opportunity to buy books from this venerable, respected, acad... Read more of this blog post »

“Tizzy squawked, and he bounced like a ball on the floor.
“I completely forgot; Santa said something more.
He said that a book gives your very thoughts wings,
That carry you off to see wonderful things,
That lift you aloft, throughout time, throughout space
To every era and every place!”
