Research in the rich online archives of Jamaica, a former British colony, revealed the way of life of "free persons of colour". A sizeable community of mixed race people developed in the Caribbean islands, eventually numbering several thousand, as white men sought comfort and companionship and freed the children born to their West Indian concubines.
My heroine, Abigail, discovers that she must share her inheritance with two unknown half-sisters, free women of colour who live on the family plantation. Having crossed the ocean to meet them, she comes face to face with the vile reality of slavery, and the hypocrisy of her own community. (less)

One to read on a rainy afternoon. Abandon scepticism and enjoy the fun, just as our heroines do. The book is very much of its time, in language and in spirit. The two giddy teenage heroines who struggle to make ends meet still employ a cook and a ...more

Yes, this is a tale worth telling, especially the heroic Linda's unflagging efforts to keep herself and her brother together as a family, but I felt it would have had more impact condensed to one third or one quarter of the length of this book.

I found this book disappointing rather than fascinating. Perhaps because the author is an academic rather than a storyteller, I found the myriad retellings of myth and legend from every corner of Britain confusing. The author eventually makes her way ...more

Excellent writing, with lots of interesting and authentic historical detail, but I didn't finish the book because it was not an enjoyable read.

Scary rather than comic, as the supposedly sane and sensible sister takes murder in her stride, accepting it as one more example of her sister's monstrous self-absorption. Written with verve, and I enjoyed the portrait of life in Lagos.

One to keep and dip into now and then. The author has a magpie mind, and the book holds fascinating nuggets of history, geography, literature and philosophy, all linked in some way to the oceans. Worth reading for them.

I enjoyed this. Ably translated. Very French in its convoluted sentences and digressions into the meaning of words or behind words. Although supposedly set in the 21st century, it feels like a nostalgic visit to Paris of the 50s and 60s, when ...more

The first in the Falco series. A rollicking tale, which does not take itself too seriously and gallops along, sometimes literally as our wounded herois force to admire his lady love's chariot driving skills. What is serious is the author's knowledge ...more
