I don’t think about it or try to solve it. Instead, I work on other things, like social media and researching. I read, walk the dog and sometimes go to bookstores. If I’m still stuck, I load the dishwasher. It always needs loading. No inspiration yet? I prep dinner. Last resort, I clean house. Usually, the idea of cleaning will bring me back to my old writing self.(less)

They do and say what I tell them. After raising children, this is very satisfying.(less)

Barry Lopez
“Sometimes a person needs a story more than food to stay alive...
from Crow and Weasel”
Barry Lopez

James Baldwin
“You think your pain and your heartbreak are unprecedented in the history of the world, but then you read. It was books that taught me that the things that tormented me most were the very things that connected me with all the people who were alive, who had ever been alive.”
James Baldwin

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
“I did not know how to reach him, how to catch up with him... The land of tears is so mysterious.”
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince

John Connolly
“I think the act of reading imbues the reader with a sensitivity toward the outside world that people who don't read can sometimes lack. I know it seems like a contradiction in terms; after all reading is such a solitary, internalizing act that it appears to represent a disengagement from day-to-day life. But reading, and particularly the reading of fiction, encourages us to view the world in new and challenging ways...It allows us to inhabit the consciousness of another which is a precursor to empathy, and empathy is, for me, one of the marks of a decent human being.”
John Connolly, The Book of Lost Things
