Todays author payments from Podiobooks.com and my personal taxes brought to you by Dale's Pale Ale. Because finance + beer = awesome. Or something like that.

If you're unhappy about your plunging reach on Facebook, Pundit +Jay Baer shows you four things to consider and actions you can take. None of them are easy to implement for the brand heavily invested in The Book, but all of them make a lot of sense.

Too stoned to steal. Too fried to fight.
Two months of data (admittedly not a long time) shows a decrease in violent and property crime in Denver. Apparently, not all mood-altering substances have the same effect on people.
No word on profiteering from Doritos.

It is National Beer Day, and I've yet to have a beer. Time to rectify that. From Wikipedia:
National Beer Day is a celebration of the Cullen–Harrison Act being signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 22, 1933. That law went into effect on April 7 of that year, allowing people to buy sell and drink beer again as long as it was < 3.2% (4% ABV).
Thanks, Pat, Tom and Frank! But if it's all the same to you boys, I'm going to go right past that under 3.2% bullshit and celebrate the 21st amendment while I'm at it.
Photo not current. But appropriate for the medium of the message.

Long, but very worth the read. And then some solid time for reflection.

Our prototype lander Morpheus successfully completed its 7th free flight at Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday, April 2. The lander, fueled by methane and oxygen, both considered "green" propellants, does not carry a crew, but is autonomously controlled and carries its own hazard avoidance system to pick out safe landing spots. Read & respond ONLY if you own Bitcoins!
I don't own any Bitcoins, but I'm fascinated by the concept of alternate currencies. When Bitcoin hit broke $1000 USD, I started following @bitcoinprice. Every hour, on the hour, I get an alert for the current average exchange rate. Yeah, kinda crazy for a guy who owns no Bitcoins.
Since that time, Bitcoins have lose almost 60% of their value, now trading at an average of $450 according to my update from four minutes ago.
If you hold any Bitcoins, I'm curious what you think of the current slump -- if indeed it is a slump at all. I know why the current drop has happened (thanks, IRS and China.) I'm curious how you feel about the alt currency in light of those moves.

Google broke email marketing. Again.
Great. Everything I told my students a week ago about email marketing is now useless. Which is a good thing!
Google is rolling out a new test of the promotions tab of their inbox, and it looks awesome! It looks like an interesting mix of Pinterest (I still say Google will buy them) and Schema used to make a pleasant experience.
So if you've been optimizing your headline for increase open rates, you may want to rethink your strategy so that your preview is visually appealing. Oh, and if you were one of those short-sighted marketers begging your subscribers to move your messages to their Inbox, you probably want to start begging them to move you back. (And stop trying to go around Google. Live with it.)

Which side of chasm will you be on, authors?
Tracy Hickman is a friend of mine. And it kills me that he's feeling the effects of disruption. But it can't be helped. It is today's reality, and we're not going back.
I echo +Joe Konrath's advice, Terry, when he says: I chose to give NY Publishing the finger. I encourage you to do the same.
